I initially bought this hard drive as it offered the best value for money for storage and also as it had the USB 3.0 connectivity. The unique docking station system seemed like it world be handy should I buy more hard drives.
Admittedly the dock has been convenient (as I ended up with 2 of these hard drives), but I have had a few problems getting the drives connected through the docks. It sometimes takes a few goes at plugging and unplugging the dock for the drive to register. The drives can also be annoying when they often decide not to turn off with the PC, so you have to unplug the dock's power input to power the drive down and then plug it back in when you want to access the drive again.
I'm also quite unimpressed with the USB 3.0 because, admittedly, it doesn't seem all that much quicker than USB 2.0, as well as being less reliable with regard to connectivity.
Now moving on to extras, the drives do come with additional software. The programme offering automatic PC backup is supposed to be very good, but I bought the drive purely to store recorded TV and so decided to remove all the software as it became an inconvenience.
Speaking directly of the storage, I've had no problems with reliability and the drive never seems to get too hot. The hard drive casing is reassuringly well ventilated. There are also lights on the front of the casing to tell you how full the hard drive is. A gimmick yes - but it looks good!
