The Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB Portable Drive adds a larger capacity to a brand of hard-drive I have come to rely on. For the longest time, I have used these WD passport drives for my portable backups. Finally a 500 GB model is here. The Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB was the largest capacity you could get for a while. WD has been increasing variety by adding a variety of colors including black, red, yellow, white and blue. But other than that these drives are basically all the same. Considering how I've been buying different brands lately to get larger storage, I was happy to get my hands on this drive. I have owned a bunch of these drives and used them with no problems on computers running Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X. The drive has a nice shiny exterior. The case can scratch in transit and the surface also attracts fingerprints and dust. But the look is still nice and you can easily purchase a case or holder for the drive if it bothers you. Most versions don't ship with the included case, but you can pick it up the CaseLogic Small External Hard Drive Case for $10 to $15.
Transfer speeds are still limited by the 480 Mps connection speed of USB 2.0, but performs somewhat slower than this when performing large backups. The USB2.0 speed rating can not really be achieved in production and you will get a fraction of that. But it's a trade-off that's worth it since it's USB-powered. The software utilities included with this device will be most useful for beginners. I tested the backup software in particular but found it to be slow and impractical. I mean REALLY slow. It works, but cutting and pasting is better. Take my advice: don't use these utilities and just do cut and paste backups and saves to this drive.
I've had good luck with the passport line of drives. They seem to have lower failure rates than many MyBook drives, though I only had one issue with one of those. But these guys have held up fine.
It's nice to finally get the 500GB capacity in one of these drives. This drive is perfect for portable drive for backups on the run. There are smaller drives but other than capacity there is no real difference between them. I also own a LaCie Rugged 500GB Portable Hard Drive, and that drive seems more durable. It includes an additional fire-wire interface, but it does cost a little more. Considering how many of these I have to buy, I don't mind having a mix and match of both.
I have had this harddrive for many years now and its been the one that has lasted the longest! I have had many harddrives because I always tend to fill up my space with pictures, music movies and games. I have purchased a number of cheap (No Frills ) branded ones which were ok but all have gone wrong and broke. I have had ones that have corrupted and failed, Ones where the power supply has created a power surge and broke it. Neadless to say I have not had much luck with external harddrives apart from this one, Its lasted me the longest, it does the job and I never seem to have any problems with it. The HD is a old one and for that the size of it, is big compared to new HD and the fact with this one you need to plug a DC connector in. Most new HD are made to be as small as possilble and to be as simple as possible.
If the new HD could do all these things and be as reliable as this sterdy harddrive then we would never have any problems. I have always trutsed weston digitial with HD because they always seem to produce quality items and thats why they are so popular. There used in most things these days from xbox's to tv HD to memory sticks ect. All of their products I have sampled have been perfect and this is why I beleive they are one of the leading HD manufactures and the one I trust the most.!
The Hard drive itself:
Its very reliable
It can be stood two ways ( stand up or down flat)
The brand is reliable
Very easy to use
Great value for money
Having had my PC for a long time now I had noticed that I was running our of storage space. I therefore felt that I needed to get an external hard drive and one if a suitable size so that I knew it would last a long time. You can now get this hard drive for just £60 from Amazon although I bought mine for £80.
The first advantage of this hard drive is that it is 250GB which is absolutely ideal for storing endless amounts of multimedia. I have found if to be very safe and secure and it is ide for backing up your computer which gives you reassurance. It was easy to install and really did work right out of the box.
I really like the way if looks really stylish and it is relatively small which makes it great to put on your desk. I really would recommend this because it has offered everything that you would want from an external hard drive. One thing to be aware of is that it uses a mains supply to power it which I found to be slightly annoying. I really like how quiet it was when in use, it really does almost run silently!
Considering the price this really is an excellent external hard drive that really is quite portable. It is fantastic how you can put a collection of movies on it and then take it to a friends house to watch them! The case is secure and offers a good deal of protection whilst the stand keeps it steady. I hope this was useful and thank you very much for reading!
