As far as external hard drives are concerned, this one is particularly attractive. Western digital have a number of different hard drives on the market and are continually developing them for our growing masses of digital media! This is one of the latest external hard drives and won me over with the snazzy design, humongous capacity and the promise of USB 3.0 speeds.
==Price and availability==
This hard drive cost a whopping £110 pounds, but hopefully the large amount of space will mean that it should last me for ages! It is available from online stores or Curry's.
The best thing about this hard drive is that it is so sleek and thin. It measures 6.5 inches by 1.9 inches and is just over 1 kg in weight. It is curved and shiny with an illuminated capacity gauge. It is supposed to look like a book shape, hence the curved 'spine' look! The hard drive comes with an AC adapter and a USB cable. At the back of the hard drive is an on and off switch. The hard drive has a capacity of 2TB and comes with the Smartware software.
The Software is extremely easy to use and navigate around. Once you connect the hard drive via the USB cable to the computer, it prompts you to install the Smartware software. Once loaded, it will then perform a scan of the C: drive of the computer and show its findings in a table, it splits the media up into categories for example pictures, music, movies etc. It shows the L: drive as a large bar that fills up as you copy items over. You can retrieve items easily and swap things around. It shows exactly what is on the computer and on the L: drive (the hard drive.) It is so easy that anyone can use it and was not as daunting as I first thought!
The hard drive transfers data fairly quickly across. I would estimate that a movie takes me about 10 minutes. It transfers using USB 2.0 however it does have the capacity to transfer through a USB 3.0 port. If you can do this, then you are very lucky as a film will take only a couple of minutes. It is supposed to be 3 times faster than USB 2.0.
I have used the hard drive to back up 'most' of my DVD collection. I use a programme downloaded from the internet that bypasses the copyright protection (not doing anything wrong, it is the only way to back up the collection!) and transfers the films directly to the hard drive. I do this rather than always using the Smartware software and find it just as easy and user friendly. It recognises the L: drive and moves the films directly on to it with ease.
The machine makes the odd whirring and humming but it is not particularly loud. I can have it working away in the background and it does not bother me. It tends to only 'rouse' when it is transferring large amounts of data.
I'm really happy with the hard drive. It is quick and easy to transfer data and although I do not use the higher USB 3.0 speeds, I like the fact that it gearing for the future and should not date. It will take me forever to fill this device. I would much rather spend the money on one good system than have to buy other hard drives in the future. The massive capacity will mean that it will last me for a long time and the design is extremely stylish. It is sleek and sexy; I really like the design of the hard drive and it does not look out of place in my home. I tend to keep it with the television and it fits in well with my black television and blu-ray player.
There is the facility to password protect your data which is useful for the safety conscious of us. This is easy to set and if you forget it all that will happen is that you will have to reformat the system, lose the data and start from scratch.
My only downside to the machine is that I wish it was lighter. I understand that it has to be a substantially sized device to hold such a huge amount of data; however it is a bit of a pain lugging it from television to computer when I want to transfer things over. 1kg is not that much; however I would prefer it to be smaller!
I cannot recommend this device enough, it is extremely reliable, safe and secure and geared towards looking after our media in the future. An excellent buy!
