I picked up a bottle of the Boots Essentials range eye make up remover in a recent 3 for 2 deal making it cost less than a pound so I thought this was good value for such a large bottle of eye make up remover.
Gel is the word
This is a strange one for a cleanser as I am more used to the oil based eye make up removers, or even pads soaked in clear lotion but gel? Never before!
I attempt to use a cotton wool pad with this eye make up remover but it doesn't really absorb in to the pad and sort of slides around on the top whilst I try to juggle it on to my eye area. It feels lovely and cooling though and is a wonderful sensation after a hard day's work!
sliding around and cooling sensations aside, the main point of using this product is to remove eye make up and it did seem to shift most of it off. I used a water based toner on the rest of my face then took two eye make up pads afterwards to see if there was any mascara left on my lashes and there was a little bit on the pads after a thorough rub.
Probably not. This felt a bit sticky and didn't really remove the make up enough to my liking. It is very cheap and purse friendly but I think I am firmly in the oil based eye make up remover camp as it seems to shift the lot gently and condition the lashes.
I won't be back for more but am glad I got to try this out. I'll be putting the rest of my bottle on the charity table at work as I am really not that bothered about using it any more. There are far better products out there on the market.
This was a purchase in hope that it might be good for sensitive skin, with the aspect of this being cucumber, I decided to give it try.
With this being a gel, it was more tricky to apply to a cotton pad and wipe as you needed to work the product into the cotton pad to actually stay on.
This was very refreshing and uplifting when applied and actually was very good for my sensitive skin and I would happily recommend it on that front.
This, however, is a product to remove eye makeup. I have various mascaras so from the cheapest to the most expensive this product failed, personally for me, to remove the mascara at all.
When I managed to get it moving, after a considerable amount of time, it left a lot of smudging of mascara around te eyes to remove and panda eyes in the morning.
The one thing it did take off was the eyeshadow, but to be fair by the end of the day the eyeshadow has already made its way off:)
This smelt wonderful and if it had been good for the mascara I would have stuck to it but t was not effective enough. Could not recommend this at all.
Removing your eye make up properly is an extremely important (and annoying) part of my daily routine. I tend to find it quite hard to find a good eye make up remover as most of the ones I come across are too oily, greasy, irritating or expensive.
I seen this eye make up remover in Boots a while ago while I was looking for new facial wash, and figured I might as well try it. (Impulse buys are a common thing with me).
How To Use
Simply take your cotton bud and apply a little of this gel onto it, then gently swipe it over your eyes to remove the make up. It isn't difficult to use and it also gets to work very quickly, which I find useful as I am not losing all my eye lashes scrubbing at my mascara to come off.
There are a number of different things I love about this eye make up remover. The first is that it actually works, I use quite heavy eye make up quite regularly and never have a problem with removing it with this.
Also this gel doesn't have an irritating effect on my eyes, this is great because eye make up remover products tend to make me have stingy, puffy eyes, but luckily I have had no problems with this one.
I like this this is a gel, it is easily applied onto the cotton buds and also isn't as messy or greasy as the liquid eye make up removers that I have used in the past.
Finally the cucumber scent, isn't too overwhelming, it doesn't feel to unnatural for me to be smearing this over my eyes, which is great as other similar products can be too scented.
Would I Repurchase?
I would indeed, and have done in the past. This fits in perfectly with my daily beauty routine and I will continue using it in the future.
Price and Availability
You can pick this up in Boots for around £2-£3 from memory, sometimes Boots put it on 3 for 2 offer along with the rest of the Cucumber Boots range. It isn't overly expensive, but I usually wait until it goes on offer and stock up!
I think that this is a great eye make up remover and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something that is not to harsh or expensive and does the job well. Overall I would give this 5 out of 5 stars.

As you can tell from some of my other reviews I am a big fan of the cucumber range of facial products in Boots. One of the best products in the range in my opinion is this eye make up remover gel.
The product works really well for me, taking my make up off cleanly whilst still being kind to my eyes. The skin around and under our eyes is really thin and prone to wrinkles and so a product that treats it gently is definitely a winner in my books.
Boots describe this oroduct as such, "Essentials Cucumber Eye Make Up Remover Gel is infused with extract of cucumber to help gently soften and soothe your skin. Enriched with soothing cucumber and vitamins, this refreshing gel works to gently remove all traces of make-up around the delicate eye area."Like all their cucumber products this gel comes in quite a cheap looking vottle but then what do you expect for £1.50. I would rather pay a cheaper price than pay more for fsncy packaging.
The bottle is a slight green colour with a green flip cap lid so this makes it really easy to get the gel out.The gel is really easy to use. I add it to a cotton wool pad and then gently place it over my eye and rub ever so slughtly to make sure everything comes off and it reallt does. The gel is quite cooling and soothing on my eyes and after use my eyes look and feel really fresh and clean.Like I've said above, 150ml for £1.50 is a really good price for a product that really works.
Usually when it comes to removing my eye make up I do so with my usual cleansing and toning routine for quickness more than anything else because I am lazy! However that has changed lately because it was becoming a really messy task and I was sick of getting smeared with gunk all over my face on an all too regular basis. The reason this has changed in recent times is simple. I have converted to most of my make up being Max Factor, long lasting and long wearing, quality (in my opinion) make up. For evenings I use Sleek eyeshadows which are all highly pigmented colours and add to to that eyeliner as well as liquid eyeliner and a waterproof mascara......and lashings of it!
So I have just recently finished my bottle of this that I picked up for £1.50 in Boots and thought I'd share my opinion on it!
This comes in a see through plastic bottle with a dark green flip-top lid to the top of it which conceals a hole and then on the front of it we are simply told what it is and who is made by then on the back of the bottle directions for use, ingredients and size is all stated (150ml) and contact details for Boots are given. It is quite a cheap looking bottle this one though robust and informative as it needs to be to be fair to it.
The Eye Make Up removing 'Gel':
What you get with this is a very thin and almost watery looking transparent green in colour liquid. It has very little body to it and is really rather runny which I wasn't expecting from the way its described and it has a sweet sort of cucumber fragrance to it which is pleasant enough and distinctive.
I apply this to my eyes with cotton wool/pads. I add a little per go to whatever I'm using and I did find this messy to use as it was so dribbly!
Using it is quite cooling and refreshing on the eyes though and it does lift off all my eye make up, but it takes work from me to achieve that and lots of the product and of some cotton wool.
I find the best way to use this is to apply it direct to the cotton wool, place it on my closed eyes for a couple of seconds and to wipe, it is a messy process though if like me you do use a lot of eye makeup products!
Like I say though it works, for me though...well I wont be buying it again. Although its fine on my sensitive eyes and does work with some effort I cant justify the messy process it takes to work, I don't like the consistency of the gel at all and I use far too much cotton wool products for my liking and will next time spend out a little extra on something better quality!
Only available from Boots stores and this is also available in a fragrance free formula for the same £1.50 price tag.
This review is also posted on Ciao under this same username.
The first thing to admit is that i mainly bought this for the boots points, that and the reviews on the boot website were pretty good. Having said that, its nice to know other dooyooers agree with me that this product really isn't that great.
Price and Packaging:
Cheap, only £1.50! Nice and simple, the bottle is a good size and quite a nice shape. I like the fact the bottle is translucent so you can see how much you have left!
I like the green product, it makes it feel more 'cucumbery', and the scent is quite refreshing. Its a little bit runny for my liking. Its fine when on the cotton pads I use, but once applied to my eyes its seems to run everywhere and I have to use several others to mop up after I've used it!
Really not that great. I use GOSH velvet touch eyeliner (I've done a review if your interested, it's awesome by the way :D) and so any makeup remover that removes it gets 5 stars from me. This begins to get rid of it, after a little bit of gentle scrubbing, which i would prefer not to do. I find it most effective if i put the pad with the product over my closed eyelid and leave it for 5-10 seconds before wiping, but even then results aren't the best.
Whilst I tried to avoid getting it in my eyes, it did go in of course (its EYE makeup remover, its going to!) and when it did, it stung quite a lot. I don't have particularly sensitive eyes, though in the summer hayfever increases the sensitivity majorly. However, anytime of year on a pain scale, it rates probably about 3/10 (10 being OMG my eyeballs are burning away). That's not ridiculously high, but it still annoyed me that it happened with a product designed for a sensitive area.
I accept this is an essentials product, but I still expected better quality from boots!
I mainly use facial wipes to remove all of my make up, including eye make up. However, I bought some Boots own brand Essentials Cucumber Eye Make Up Remover Gel as I had Advantage Points to use up. This 150ml sized green plastic bottle, with a clever little flip up lid, only costs £1.50 to buy but I got it for 'free' with 150 Advantage Points. I have been using it now for about five weeks and it really is very effective and easy to use.
I wasn't initially too sure about the word 'gel' on the description on this bottle. I was thinking it might be quite thick and glutinous in consistency and therefore a bit messy to use. I need not have worried, however. This isn't what I'd actually describe as a 'gel'. The consistency is too thick to be descried as a true gel but it is thicker than water, so it's sort of some where in between in terms of consistency.
I use this applied to cotton wool pads and then I gently wipe all over the eye area. The gel really does effectively remove all traces of eye make up including mascara, with just a few light strokes. There is no need to rub or pull at the delicate eye area as the gel just seems to melt away the make up.
This is suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive, and it is also fine to use if you wear contact lenses. It has a delicious fresh cucumber smell and it's light enough o use without my feeling like I have clogged up the eye area. I like to keep mine in the fridge so it's nice and cold when I use it and it also helps to clam down the skin around my lids if they have been feeling a little sensitive or irritated throughout the day.
I hardly need to use very much of this eye make up remover at all and a little bit really does go a very long way. It's so effective and yet so reasonably priced and kind to my skin, I really cannot fault it at all.
I am getting quite loyal to Boots products and have now bought more than several items from Boots where as before I used to go online and browse for beauty products, but seem to be able to find some really good items from Boots and this Boots Essentials Cucumber Eye Make Up Remover Gel is one of my finds.
It's from the essentail range and is such a bargain at £1.50 per 150ml bottle and now I have a loyalty card I can save my points and get this for 150 points, but I'm not sure yet how long it willl take me to get that many, but im not grumbling at having to pay £1.50 .
The bottle is plastic and green so you can recycle after it's empty and it has a flip up lid so you don't get spills. The liquid inside smells of cucumbers and is not too runny so that you can squeeze a little onto a cotton wool bud with out it running out of the bottle too quicky and going to waste.
You only need a little of the gel and then wipe the closed eye lid gentle without rubbing too hard as it removes the make-up quickly and efficiantly enough without having to scrub it off.
This is for all types of skin and is gentle to the skin too, I have sensative skin so have to be careful what I use especailly on my face where the skin seems to be more sensative than other places. This doesn't irritate the skin or leave it red and blotchy looking, but feels smooth after use and removes the make-up well.
It doesn't feel sticky and dries quickly after use.
It has extracts of cucumber and vitamins for the skin so feels good after using.
I'm happy to recommend this to you as for £1.50 you can't really go wrong.
=== The product ===
This is a cucumber extract based gel that is designed to remove make-up from the eye area. This is from the Boots Essentials range so should be reasonably priced like most of the other products are.
=== How to use ===
I used this by putting some on to a cotton wool pad and then running it across my eyelids gently, rubbing slightly but not so much as to cause irritation.
=== The price ===
This is available from Boots stores and the Boots website with a 150ml bottle costing £1.42.
=== Overall opinion ===
This is a cucumber based eye make-up remover gel and I am not really a fan of cucumber. The main reason that I used this was that I was staying away for a few days unexpectedly and there was a small Boots shop there which did not have the biggest stock so I chose the cheapest product and hoped it would be alright!
I used this gel on a cotton wool pad and rubbed it across my eye. I did not rub hard as I have sensitive skin and my eyes can be very delicate at times. I was instantly disappointed when the cotton wool pad was basically clean as I had put a few layers of mascara on that morning and therefore they had barely budged. After a few more wipes it did start to remove a little bit of my eye make-up but certainly not all of it and probably not even half.
Because the gel was not very good I ended up having to rub my eyes quite rigorously to remove my eye make-up and this then made them sore the following day and meant that I had to go out and purchase some cleansing wipes instead to do the job properly which defeated the purpose of buying something cheap to save money and for convenience of not having to cart stuff back home with me.
The only thing that I really liked about this product was the packaging. This gel comes in a bottle with a flip top lid and its good packaging that works well. The packaging is quite basic and its easy enough to see that this is a part of the essentials range and also how much gel is left, however, as I won't be using this again I won't be worrying about running out!
The gel is clear, with a jelly texture, and it looks like it will be green before it comes out of the bottle. The scent of cucumber extract is quite strong and while this is quite a fresh smell I do not really like this and didn't realise it would be quite so strong when I purchased this, however, if you like cucumber scented products then you would like the smell of this.
I found that this removed other make-up from my face, such as blusher and foundation, but was distinctly lacking at removing mascara, eye liner and eye shadow which is really what it should excel at. The particular make-up that I was wearing when using this is a group of products that I use almost daily and I have never really struggled to find a product to remove them in the past but perhaps because this is cheap it is just not very strong.
I do not think that the gel would have irritated my eyes had I not had to scrub lots to actually remove any mascara.
I am actually onto my second bottle of this eye make-up remover, so thought I would share my thoughts. I first bought a bottle of this after reading a review on it, at a time when I was trying to save money. Whilst I do not think it is the best eye make-up remover on the market, I do certainly think it's the best in this price range, which is why I went on to buy a second bottle.
The product is from the Boots Essentials range, which is Boots economy range of 'no frills' products. The cucumber eye make-up remover gel is one of two eye make-up removers in this range, the other being a fragrance free eye make up remover lotion.
The bottle this comes in is rather plain and it does indeed look basic. It's green in colour with the name printed on the front and not much else. Directions are printed on the back and whilst plain and simple, the packaging is more than functional and up to the job and I like that the plastic is slightly translucent so that I can see how much I have left.
The thing I like most about this product is that it is a gel not a liquid. With previous liquid eye make up removers I've found that they soak into the cotton wool pad, meaning that you invariably end up using more than you actually intended or indeed need. In contrast this gel sits on top of the cotton wool so you have more control over how much you are actually using.
The product is suitable for all skin types and feels very cooling on the skin when applied. The green gel doesn't feel greasy or oily as many eye make-up removers can and glides over the skin easily. It has a faint cucumber scent, but is not too strong or overpowering.
For such a cheap product, I have to admit that I was more than impressed with how effective this is. Eye shadow and liner come off very easily and mascara vanishes without trace. The only thing this struggles with slightly is waterproof mascara. In this case, I have to wipe over my eyes a few times to get rid of all mascara and residue. In an ideal world this would take everything off first time - the skin around the eye area is delicate, so this constant wiping can pull at the skin - but on the whole I feel this product still performs well for the price.
I do have sensitive eyes and am also a contact lens wearer, but this gel is gentle enough so as not to irritate my eyes. Another thing I like is that there is no greasy residue left around my eye area, as frequently happens with other brands I've used.
A 150ml bottle of this costs just £1.42 from Boots, making it their cheapest option. They do sell a Simple product for a few pence less however it is only 1/3 of the size at 50ml. Each bottle has a shelf life of six months.
Overall I am very pleased with this product and its performance. As already stated in the review, I do not think it is the best on the market, but certainly it is the best eye make-up remover I have found for less than £5 and for that reason I will award it a deserving four out of five stars.
I always use my beloved baby wipes to take off my eye make up at night and although these work brilliantly for me I'm aware that they aren't designed for this purpose specifically and as I'm getting older I thought it might be time to try something that would pamper the area around my eyes a bit more. So I visited my local Boots and bought the Boots Essentials Cucumber Eye Make Up Remover Gel, there was only a couple of different makes to choose between as it's such a small branch and my decision was based on the price (£1.42 for 150mls) and the fact that it contains extract of cucumber which I thought would be quite refreshing.
The product comes in a green bottle as pictured above and has a flip top type of lid which is easy to open and there's a small hole for the gel to come out of. The gel is quite thin and comes out easily, the instructions on the bottle tell you to apply with cotton wool and wipe over closed eyes which is what I did.
I do wear quite a lot of (non waterproof) mascara so I wasn't expecting it to just disappear as I wiped and it really didn't, I seemed to be just smearing it around my eyes. Even after 3 applications on fresh cotton wool I was still trying to get rid of it and I found I was really having to scrub at it which was getting uncomfortable. Because I was rubbing so vigorously I managed to get a bit actually in my eye which wasn't pleasant either, it didn't sting like something like shampoo would but it wasn't a nice feeling. I decided to give it up as a bad idea as my eyes were just getting red from all the rubbing.
The redness did go down quite quickly so it wasn't uncomfortable for long. I wouldn't describe my eyes as being particularly sensitive so I definitely wouldn't recommend this product to anyone who does. The bottle says that it's suitable for all skin types. I would say that the area around my eyes felt very slightly sticky afterwards (that's the only word I can think of that best describes the feeling).
The gel has quite a nice but very subtle cucumber smell to it. It is dermatoligically tested.
I've had this bottle for a couple of months now and have tried using it again a couple of times but have had the same results again really so having written this review it will be going in the bin and for the time being I will stick with the baby wipes.
Removing my make up at the end of the day is very important to me as I like my skin to feel nice and clean before I go to bed as I have a beauty routine and have done this routine since I was a teenager. I had been trying to save money in recent months and I still wanted to treat myself at the same time and when I was shopping in Boots with my daughter recently for some beauty products she wanted to purchase we both spotted this one at the same time. We both bought one to try since it was a good price.
It was priced at just £1.30 for a 150ml bottle, the bottle is plastic with a flip lid and the liquid gel inside is quite thick, it is a clear liquid which smells really nice and very pleasant for the cheap price. I have used some of the other products in this range which is exclusive to Boots and I have found they are nice for my skin. It is a very basic range which is affordable and a very good quality, this gel is also a good quality and worth the money in my opinion.
The gel has a nice texture which is very soft and smooth, it also feels very cooling on my skin when I use it to wipe away my make up at the end of the day. It has not irritated my skin and I have sensitive skin but this one has been absolutely fine. I just squeeze a small amount onto a cotton pad and wipe away my make up, it removes my mascara without leaving my eyes feeling all sore and red as I have found with some other products.
This one feels nice and gentle on my skin, it feels nice and refreshing too, also it is feels cool on my skin and it has not dried my skin too much as I sometimes I find that make up removers tend to leave my skin feeling all taut and tight, where it makes me feel it is really dry but this one has had a very good feeling for my skin and I am very pleased with how my skin has felt after use.
This has never had that stinging effect on my eyes like some other products seem to sometime have on the eye area. It is quite a mild liquid and although it is designed for the eyes, I have used it to remove the rest of my make up at the same time and it has removed it perfectly.
This gel contains extract of cucumber to soothe the skin and feel soft on the skin as it is a nice ingredient for a beauty product. It is not a harsh ingredient for the skin and it has lots of vitamins to help the skin feel nice and smooth and nourish at the same time as remove the make up.
I think for the low price this one is a really nice make up remover in my opinion and I think it is well worth the money, as only a small amount is needed on the pad to work into the make up and remove it nicely. I tend to buy beauty products which are a little more expensive most of the time because I have my favourites but like everyone else we all like a change at times and I am no different. My daughter has been very happy also with this one and although she does not have the same routine as I do each day, she is beginning to work her way towards this routine because she is getting older now and becoming more wiser and listening to her mum a little bit more lol.
I recommend this one for anyone to try because I think it is extremely nice on the skin and it works and most of all it is affordable for most budgets.
I give this one 5 stars.
Thank you for reading my review.
I was recently in Boots wanting to buy a couple of items. It was a bonus points weekend, so I was looking around for other essentials to buy to stock up on the extra points. It would have defeated the purpose if I just spent more money on things but this make up remover gel was nice and cheap at £1.49 for 150ml.
The make up remover comes in a muted plastic bottle, so it is subtle but you can still see the green liquid through it. The lid is a round screw top with a small hole which you can squeeze a tiny bit (or as much as you need) of product onto some cotton wool and then rub it on your face. The liquid is nice and cool and soothing, which I guess is the properties of the cucumber. It smells of cucumber but not too offensive and strong, and it certainly doesn't leave the smell on your face afterwards, which is where another Boots make up remover fell down with me.
I didn't take too much rubbing or too much remover to get my eyes clean or my foundation off. It also didn't irritate my skin or leave it sore afterwards. So in this sense the make up remover did it's work really well.
The downside to this make up remover is that it has a bit of a funny texture. I am used to them being quite watery, but this one is a bit thicker and stickier (hence the fact it is called gel) that makes it a bit harder to dispense!
This is not as easy to use as make up wipes (so I wouldn't recommend it to be taken travelling or on holiday) but it does do a better job.
I purchased this eye make up remover as part of a 3 for 2 deal in Boots along with the Essentials Cucumber Cleanser and Toner. It is very reasonably priced at £1.39 for 150ml ans si is much cheaper than the many branded eye make up removers on the market.
As you can see from the picture, there is nothing special about the packaging, it is an opaque bottle and thus you can see how much you have used and get ready to buy a replacement- I like this! The product is dispensed from a squeezy end at the top of the bottle- it comes out quite easily.
The product is quite runny, I normally apply it to a cotton pad and then use the soaked cotton pad over my eyes. I find that is tends to take some rubbing (not really good on the delicate eye area) to get the eye make up off, especially for mascara.
This product also stings terribly if it gets in the eye! As I've found it difficult to remove mascara I tried placing a soaked cotton pad over my eyes and gently applying pressure to try and remove the mascara with minimum rubbing but unfortunately the product seeped between my eye lids- leaving me with red runny eyes :-(
Overall, this product is cheap but not one of the best on the market.
being a student, i have to econimise every now and then when funds are low and also when the time isnt now to put an avon order in
in boots, i was looking for the cheapest brand of eye make up remover, as i have got into a habit of taking off mascara before bed. i never used to take it off, but more recently it has becomea habit so i got through my previous avon brand quite quickly.
i brought this for £1.50 from boots, as it is a cucumber gel and i know cucumbers can do wonders for your eyes.
when i first tried it, i thought it was quite thin in consistency, but i gave the bottle a shake and it seemed to mix up better. after i had given the bottle a good old shake, i applied it to my eyes using cotton wool.
this product smells really nice, and smells fresh and clean. it takes the make up off well, including waterproof eye make up, which is what i sometimes wear.
the packaging of this product is very plain, but this is what makes it so cheap and wha it lacks in packaging , it makes up for in product
id recommend this to anyone who wears alot of eye make up remover, as i have found its important to remove this before bed. Its cheap and leaves the skin around your eyes feeling conditioned
