I wear make-up practically every single day and it can be quite a chore to get my skin clean and clear at the end of the day. I have been looking to try more natural and organic beauty products recently, and came across this Neal's Yard Remedies Organic Eye Make-Up Remover on my favourite natural beauty website www.amarya.co.uk. It costs RRP £10.75 for a 100ml bottle.
Product description: "Gently removes even water-proof make-up, while conditioning lashes and hydrating and protecting the delicate eye area. The calming infusion includes nurturing damask rose, antioxidant white tea, soothing aloe vera and a smoothing tri-peptide. Oil-free. Certified organic by the Soil Association. "
The packaging of this eye make-up remover fits with the rest of the Neals Yard Remedies recognisable branding style, and comes in a deep blue coloured bottle. I was a little bit disappointed that the bottle is made of plastic as some of the other skin care products come in beautiful coloured glass bottles. I usually prefer clear packaging so that I can see exactly how much product is left inside, but it is possible to see the level of remaining liquid inside by holding the bottle up towards a light. The bottle has a flip-top lid and inside the lid there is a small hole which forms a little spout for you to dispense the remover in a controlled way.
I always try and take extra care of my eyes as part of my skin care routine and use an eye make-up remover followed with an eye cream moisturiser. It is amazing how much make-up I get through on a day to day basis, with two shades of eye shadow, eye liner, mascara and highlighter forming the basics of my standard look. All these layers need to be fully removed at the end of the day to avoid causing irritation to the eyes and to stop my pillows from getting smudged leaving me with a "lovely" panda face look!
Recommended directions for use: Shake well before use. Apply to cotton wool, hold lightly over closed eyes before gently wiping away.
The make-up remover has a liquid consistency and is completely colourless. This is a Soil Association certified organic product made of 100% natural organic ingredients. I like to use natural and organic beauty products as they seem to be better quality and I don't have to worry about adding more chemicals into my body. The plus side to this is that it is good for my skin, but the down side is that you don't get any of the more sophisticated synthetic perfumes to improve the scent. This make-up remover has a noticeable scent, which I think reminds me of treacle and wilted flowers. Hmm, not a nice mix! It does make the process of using the product a little on the unpleasant side, and while I appreciate that it's just the natural smell of the ingredients used, I can't help but dislike it.
To use this I simply apply directly onto a cotton wool pad until there is a small patch that has fully soaked through. I then to hold the pad against my eye so that the liquid has a chance to soak onto my lids and lashes, and then once the make-up has loosened it comes away with a few wipes. This works quickly and effectively to get rid of all the different products I use including eye shadow, eye liner and mascara, although sometimes a little extra care is required to make sure that my lashes are fully clean. This process can make quite a mess of the cotton wool pads, and I make the most of mine by cleansing one eye using one side of the cotton pad, and then turning it over and using the other side of the cotton pad to cleanse my other eye. This makes it more economical to use and means less waste when throwing away my cotton pads as I have used both sides, and seeing as the liquid has already soaked all the way through into the cotton pad then I effectively get double the amount of use out of it.
I prefer using a liquid make-up remover such as this over my eyes as it is a fuss-free way to cleanse. Another benefit with this make-up remover is that it gives a lovely refreshing feeling on the skin and provides a nice cooling sensation around the eye area. I always feel like my skin is fresh and clear after I have used it and there is no greasy or sticky residue left behind. The eye area is particularly delicate and can be prone to sensitivity, but I did not experience any irritation at any time when using this, which I expect is due to the fact that 1, it's specifically designed for removing eye make-up, and 2, it is made using natural, organic ingredients.
I do feel that this is quite expensive for what it is, and I don't think I will continue using it as I'd prefer to find a cheaper alternative. It does work well to remove eye-make up, leaving the skin cleansed and refreshed. Aside from the price, I also find the scent really off-putting and this is another deterrent stopping me from wanting to make a repeat purchase.
