An excellent eye balm but very expensive

One of the SkinCeuticals products I received in my (small but valuable) competition goody bag in July was this eye balm, which I was chuffed as nuts about as with a baby who does not understand the word 'sleep' I seem to always be on the lookout just lately for products to help me look more awake.

The balm comes in a tiny 14oz pot, not particularly attractive but really it's such a small item that this is irrelevant as it can barely be seen on my bathroom shelf among the other smellies! The screw lid is chunky and easy to handle even during a pampering session when your fingers may be hanging onto any creamy or greasy residue from other products, this is a definite bonus as small pots and lids are notoriously tricky to open sometimes!

To use the balm you simply dab a very small amount (and here I mean two or three minuscule dots) of balm into the skin beneath your eyes, you can use it along your brow-line too if you suffer from hooded eyes although I don't apply it in this area. The reason I say don't apply too much is because this is an extremely rich and heavy product, using a lot will dull your skin and (in my opinion) may even cause blocked pores or blackheads.

It has a gorgeous consistency; I'd been expecting a waxy balm when I first opened the pot, but instead it has a thick creamy texture which makes it so luxurious feeling that it's a dream to apply. It doesn't drag across my skin and absorbs quickly (providing you haven't overestimated how much you need!), because of the general richness of the balm it does leave a bit of shine on my skin but within a few minutes it'll have calmed down enough for me to apply foundation or powder over it. I've noticed pressed powder is best to use over this (if I'm not wearing foundation) as loose powder tends to clog a bit where the balm has been applied, I haven't had any problems at all with my Max Factor foundation and it actually makes a very good base for that particular product.

I've noticed a slight difference in the appearance of the skin under my eyes; the 'puffiness' has gone down, but then David has now started sleeping slightly better so I'm generally getting more beauty sleep each night therefore this might not actually be the effect of the balm! I haven't got any 'fine lines' so can't test SkinCeutical's claim that it will help get rid of those, although my skin does look plumper and also feels ever so slightly firmer to the touch since I started using the balm.

I use the balm in the morning, but it's suitable to be used twice daily if you think you need an extra bit of help in the eye area. It's a high quality product which will only do good for your skin, I find it intensely moisturising so that's one benefit to using this balm even if it doesn't knock ten years off my appearance! You'll have to make your own mind up if you use it once or twice a day, personally I think it's too rich for me to use more often than I do but it would be fab for anyone with particularly dry skin around their eyes. SkinCeuticals use phytochemicals in this Eye Balm; these are plant-based so (probably) kinder than harsh chemicals to your skin, it feels very gentle to me and has the sort of texture that makes me think not many people would have a bad reaction to the product. It's never irritated my skin or eyes at all, I don't have sensitive skin but wear contact lenses so sometimes eye products can make my eyes water a bit when first applied - this has never happened after I've used this balm so bonus points for that.

This is an expensive product, I know I've written a complimentary review here but priced at £48 - £64 a pot (just 15ml, remember!) it just doesn't do enough for me to justify the price. As you only need to use such a small amount for each application the pot does last for a decent amount of time. I started using mine regularly in August and am just about coming to the end of it now, I won't replace it at that price though as eye creams at a fraction of the cost will do an equally good job. It feels more luxurious than a Garnier (for example) eye cream, but is that really worth a thirty-five quid price hike? And anyway, when I say luxurious I don't mean it in a particularly pampering kinda way - this feels 'high quality' rather than specifically feminine, it has the same sort of luxuriousness as Clinique rather than the prettier Clarins.

Anyway, to me it's not worth the price tag. It's been a gorgeous product to use for a couple of months, maybe it's a product that is more beneficial for ladies with older skin that mine? It does specify that the balm will help to repair ageing skin so that tells me it has possibly been created to help with problems that are already there, rather than trying to use it as a preventative product.
