Homebase Pedestal Fan
Advantages: Works well, looks smart, adjustable speed and direction
Disadvantages: None really
When we lived in our previous house the office was up in the converted attic and despite there being a big Velux window up there it used to get VERY hot at times so we decided to buy a fan.
The one we chose was a pedestal fan from Homebase and I can't remember how much we paid for it but the current price is £31.49. Having read the other reviews on this site the price seems to be around the £18 mark so I don't know if they got theirs on special offer.
Getting Set Up
The fan comes in a box (obviously) complete with instructions on how to put it together. The weight of the whole thing is 4.8kg so it isn't too heavy to go and collect from your local store although they will deliver for an extra £5.95.
The fan is made from white plastic and from memory was very easy to put together. The base is in the form of a cross so that it is stable in use and then the main stand is straight with the on / off and speed control switch on it and the three bladed fan sits at the top encased in a grill so you don't accidentally get your fingers or anything else caught in it.
When the fan has been put together it measures 60.6cm tall, 46.2cm wide and 13cm deep. The diameter of the actual blades is 40cm. The whole thing looks clean and smart.
Use of the Fan
Well there again it very easy to use - you just plug it into a standard socket, switch it on and Bob's your uncle! There are three speed settings so it can be adjusted to suit your circumstances. It's no good having a high speed fan that blows all the papers off your desk is it? The lowest speed is a gentle movement of air and the highest is quite a breeze!
It also has a function enabling you to tilt the fan so again it can be adjusted to suit you. When the fan is spinning it can be set to remain stationery or to turn from side to side so everyone gets a turn - the oscillating function!
Is it any Good?
Well we found it to be great for our needs. When the sun was shining directly into the office the fan really helped to cool us down and it did get a lot of use.
The only down side I can think of is, that being quite lightweight, it did seem a bit wobbly when it was in use although to be fair it never moved along the floor or fell over so it didn't cause any problems.
Obviously since it is mechanical it is going to make a noise but we didn't find this a problem as it is not excessively loud.
As the whole thing is made from white plastic it does show the dirt but a wipe over with a damp cloth soon sorted that out.
When we were stuck in a very hot hotel room in Manchester we did buy another fan which is one of the straight slim types so we have since passed our white fan on to Dave's mom but it is still going strong when the need arises.
One final remark is that this item is only available from Homebase during the warmer months but then again you wouldn't really want one when it was cold would you?
Summary: A great fan for the home or office
