My sons really enjoy dressing up, so when it came to Christmas time, as they were starting to outgrow any costumes they already owned, I decided that I could get them some more to play with. My mum was going to buy them some too, so I decided on just a couple each.
One I chose was a Ben 10 costume based upon his alien character Swampfire. I bought this in 5-7 age range as my sons were then only 4 and 6, so I was hoping that it was a costume that they both would fit into. Both my boys are tall for their age compared to their peers, but both can fit in normal T shirts and trousers in this age range.
The suit looked fantastic when I first received it. It comes as an all in one lycra style suit with feet in it. It fastens at the back with velcro, and the hand sections are worn like gloves. On the suit are spiky sections which seem to be filled with foam so they project from the surface of the suit giving a very realistic comparison to the figure seen in the cartoon. In addition to the suit, you get a foam mask which the child can wear, which again is very bright and vibrant and visually appealing. The mask itself is comfortable to wear for my sons.
However, from the very first time my youngest son put this on at age 4 and a half, it was clear to me that the sizing on this suit was not right. It was very tight around his feet, and this pulled the suit preventing it from fastening up properly on the back of the suit. When I encouraged him to put on the gloves, he said that they hurt his hands, so he used to just wear the suit with the hands flapping at the side.
To give the suit its due, the material it is made from was very good quality and it didn't pull or click when he was wearing it. My eldest never tried it on as he didn't stand a chance of it fitting. Within a few wears, this unfortunately got relegated to the back of the cupboard in favour of suits that actually fitted my sons.
It got rediscovered by my eldest son's best friend who is a more petite child, and it fit him perfectly, so we let him take it home with him where he has worn it a lot since then.
The £15 I paid for this on amazon is on par with what other fancy dress costumes cost these days. I liked the look of the costume finding that it looked really realistic and it was desirable for a child to wear. Its just such a shame that the sizing seems to be out on the suit, and being a one piece suit this then made it pretty unwearable for my children.
I would not hesitate in buying this again if I were in a shop and measured this up against my children to check it fitted, but for anyone buying online, if your child has large feet (size 12) and is wearing age 5-6 t-shirts, then the 5-7 suit is not likely to be much use for you. I think it would have fit my kids better when they were younger, say 3-4 years old.
Amazon have been out of stock of this particular suit for a while now, but I have seen the identical suit available on play.com.
