My four year old daughter is definitely a girly girl and loves playing in dressing up clothes and outfits with her friends. Her favourite, like most of her friends are princess dresses and as Disney have the best princesses and characters she is a massive Disney Princess fan.
This past Christmas I bought her some dress up items such as a tiara, handbag, dress up shoes and also this Disney Sleeping Beauty dress. Needless to say, this dress is an absolute winner, my daughter loves it and dresses up in it all the time and takes great pleasure in showing her friends her princess outfit.
The dress is shiny and pink and has a picture of the princess Aurora on it. The dress is a full length dress and just goes on over the head and has a sweet princess neckline to it.
Howeve I have a couple of issues with this dress. Firstly, it is huge, it absolutely swamps my little girl. She is quite small so I bought her the size down for her age but it is still very long on her and also the way it is cut means it falls off her shoulders all the time and she was forever holding it up when she first got it so I had to do a bit of a fix it job and sew it up at the back a bit to try and keep it on.
Second, in reality this is actually quite a poorly made, tacky dress with not much to it at all. It is made of a very cheap flimsy polyester that is shiny(that's a bit of the design of the dress though) and if you bought this as an actual proper dress you'd be very disappointed. Yes, you need to bear in mind that its a dress up, you dress, but still, it could be made of a better quality material. Within the week of my daughter receiving this she has already ripped the hem as the dress was so long and I've sewn it up but it was very hard to do and looks a bit naff if I'm being honest.
All that being said though, my daughter loves this dress and loves putting it on pretending to be a princess. It's not going to last forever but then she will of grown out of it by then anyway so I'm glad I bought it for her and would recommend it to other mums and dads.
My daughter decided to tell me the day before her fifth birthday that she wanted a Sleeping Beauty dress. I would have normally brought it from The Disney Store as they have the best looking and best quality dresses, however it was too short notice so I had to settle with a Sleeping Beauty dress from Argos.
The dress is long, bright pink and made from a silky material. It has pink elasticated shoulder straps and a white sash that runs along the top and hangs off the shoulders (like Sleeping Beauty's dress). It has a short, light pink overlay which hangs just below the waist. On the front of the dress is a printed picture of Sleeping Beauty and silver stitching detail down each side of the picture.
It looks the same as the dress in the photo above and unfortunately comes with no extras (wig, tiara etc). It's pretty and I'm sure would appeal to most little girls.
Sizes range from 3 years to 8 years. Sizing can be a bit awkward as they go up in twos - for example there's a size 3-4 years and size 5-6 years but no in between 4-5 year size. I chose a size 5-7 dress because I thought the size below would be too small (3-4 years).
I brought the 'Sleeping Beauty Dress Up Outfit' from Argos for £14.99 which certainly isn't cheap but not too expensive either.
My daughter was very happy to receive her dress and wanted to wear is right away. When she put it on, it became apparent that it was way too big - it was hanging round her ankles (far too long) and the straps kept slipping down. A year and a half on and her dress still doesn't fit properly! I didn't swap her dress because I'm stupid but if I were to buy it again, I'd buy a size smaller. She was having a princess party at school shortly afterwards so I let her wear her Sleeping Beauty dress. When I picked her up after school, all of the hem at the bottom of the dress was hanging off! I patched up the dress as best as I could. She complained the whole way home that her dress had been falling down all day!
The dress is pretty but isn't the best looking dress that I've seen. Our Sleeping Beauty dress doesn't have a huge amount of detail, it's pretty basic. There's no frills, glitter, sequins, lace or underskirt. I don't particularly like the picture of Sleeping Beauty on the front either. The costume snob in me thinks that costumes with pictures of the character on the front are a bit tacky! I do quite like the white sash that hangs across the shoulders though, that's a nice touch.
I'm not particularly pleased with the quality of the dress. The material snags really easily and my daughters dress is full of horrible little marks. It also has a lot of loose threads. As soon as I get rid of them, more pop up out of nowhere. I've also noticed that the stitching has come away around the sash and underarm area (not forgetting the hem of the dress is ruined). This wouldn't be so much of a problem if my daughter had actually got lots of use out of her dress, but she hasn't. She's worn it a few times indoors and once to a party. She has a couple of other princess dresses that she constantly dresses up in (Disney Store of course!) - they look much nicer, fit better and are much better quality. No princess wants to wear a dress that falls to bits and doesn't fit!
Another gripe is that you can't wash the dress. Only 'sponge clean'. This is absolutely ridiculous - IT'S A KIDS COSTUME! KIDS ARE MESSY! I've attempted to sponge clean but it doesn't really make the dress look clean. It could do with a good wash, but if I do that the picture will probably peel off or the dress might fall apart all together!
Basically I wouldn't recommend this dress. I would advise buying an authentic Disney Princess dress from The Disney Store (I'm not getting paid by them, honest!) which are twice the price but definitely worth it. You can normally get half your money back on Ebay when you've finished with them too!
