Disney Princess Snow White Costume
Advantages: Fun from Asda, at about a third of the price than the Disney Store ones.
My daughter is now nine years old and probably coming to the end of her dressing up days sadly. I feel I must share my thoughts about one of her favourite dressing up dresses before it goes to the big toy box in the sky, otherwise known as the loft.
My daughter's Snow White dress differs slightly to the photograph above, and I would say it's the more classic Snow White style, with a few different quirky touches. The dress is full length and touches the floor rather than the three quarter fit that seems to be favoured in recent years. I love the longer length for dressing up, as it makes it more special, and one truly feels like a princess, well I used to anyway. I know it's a long time ago now, but you never forget that feeling that a special dress gives you. Perhaps you could liken it to a bride on her wedding day.
The full puffed sleeves have the traditional pale blue with red inserts that Disney brought to life. They are full and voluminous and hold their shape really well due to the weight of the satin effect fabric. If this was too thin, I feel it would just look limp and lose the effect. The cuffs to the sleeves are edged in yellow satin, and are slightly elasticated for a nice fit, not to tight but neither too loose.
The typical white, stand up collar does indeed stand up on itself, without any addition of starch. Being an Asda product I wouldn't have expected such attention to detail, but I suppose Disney don't put their name to any old rubbish, so I shouldn't have expected less really. The edges are finished off beautifully with gold piping, along with some of the same piping along the seams of the bodice. A touch of gold ruffled lace adds the icing on the cake.
The quirky feature to this dress is the regal royal blue bodice. Rather than being a shiny satin, like the rest of the dress; this is made from glittered (faux) velvet. This isn't woven into the material which I am pleased about; the glitter sparkles have been added somehow afterwards. It looks like it's been sprayed on to my untrained eyes, but this has been permanent; in the whole eighteen months to two years my daughter has owned this dress, and many, many washes, this glitter has not dissipated one iota. The sparkle gives it another dimension and makes it a little bit more special than other versions of the Snow White dress I've seen.
A rather lovely thing to comment on is that this is not only just a play dress; it comes as a three piece set. A rather fetching, red velvet cape attaches to the dress at the shoulders, with circular discs of Velcro. Despite repeated fastenings and removals the adhesion of the Velcro has not waned, as it can do with an inferior quality fastening. A red satin covered headband featuring the classic huge red bow completes the look. My daughter wears this on occasion, when she pretends to be another Disney favourite - Minnie Mouse.
Although the bodice area is fitted, it's done rather generously to fit a bigger child. I loved this as though my daughter is still only nine, she regularly wears age thirteen clothes. The waist area is elasticated, but this has been done so that the elastic corresponds to the pleats in the skirt. A fuller figure would mean there is less gathering in the skirt because it's had to 'give' a little. A slighter child would have lots of pleats and gathering and therefore the skirt would be more voluminous - perfect for swishing about in. The skirt is lined with a nylon lining, to which many, many layers of net are stitched to add to the fullness of the skirt, without having to resort to the hoops that bend and twist with time and use, and also keeping the cost down. I personally like the net better, it's far less hassle as you don't have to keep unravelling it when it twists, also the net lies flat and makes it easier to store between play sessions.
The dress is fastened at the back with three square sections of Velcro too, and as mentioned previously, this too is perfectly grippable (is that a word?) even after all this time, and countless wearing's and washings. The material is 100% polyester, rather than cotton that you would probably get from the Disney Store, but at a significantly higher price. A typical Disney Store Dress of this quality would cost between £30 and £50, yet this only cost £20 from Asda at the time. The polyester material does mean though that it's easy to care for. I throw it in the washing machine at 30 degrees, with detergent and conditioner. There are no washing instructions on the clothes labels inside, they must have been on the initial packaging, and are long gone. I can't comment as to whether this should or should not be tumble dried, but I personally put everything in the drier, and this has suffered no ill consequences.
The length of this has been great. Obviously, you need to go with what clothes size your child usually wears as a guide. My daughter owns the age 9 - 10, and as she's grown, the dress has obviously grew shorter. It is still perfectly wearable; even now it is the three quarter length that some other dresses are made like, in the first instance. This dress would probably even last another twelve to eighteen months without being too small, due to the generous cut, and elasticated waist. Sadly though, my daughter's childhood is fading fast and her pretending to be a princess days are nearly over. :(
All in all - I would give a five star review to every Snow White dress from the Disney brand, simply for their play and fun value. Although ours was from Asda, it hasn't made the slightest difference to my daughter, so neither should it to you. This dress-up set has been well worn and well loved, and still looks almost brand new today. Kids just want to dress up, and use their imaginations, and what a better way to do it, than with a beautiful dress to assist you? My top tip - buy a full length dress, so that it will last a very long time, your little princess will thank you. :)
