I had previously came across a couple of items from the Melissa & Doug range and been very impressed with the quality of the items. With this in mind I had a look online at the various items they offered and spotted the Melissa & Doug Slice and Bake Cookie Set. Young children seem to love pretending that they are making things with pretend food, I certainly have seen that my children like to make things and serve them up to each other and anyone else who is about so this set seemed ideal. This cookie set looked really good and something that would fit in well with the cottage my daughter has in the backroom of our house which has a play cooker in it. *************** What is in the box? *************** The Melissa & Doug cookie set comes complete with twelve cookies which are made out of wood and twelve toppings for the cookies which are again made out of a nice quality wood. The toppings are either white or brown and are painted with sprinkles, icing or what look like small sweets, so that your children can serve different kinds of cookies to each other. The cookies and toppings fit together with the Velcro which are attached to them, these are easy for your children to put together and are also easy for them to separate when they want to. Also in the box you get a baking tray which the cookies can be attached to, again with Velcro. There is also a small oven glove for your children to wear, for them to use to put the tray in and out of their pretend oven, a wooden knife to slice the toppings of the cookies if they wish and a wooden spatula to serve the cookies. Finally there is a toy cookie tube to give you somewhere to store all of the cookies. As you can see there are plenty of items in the cookie set to for your children to play with, and it is all of a very high quality standard and realistic. This set is made out of high quality wood and you can tell as soon as you see it that it is going to last. The pieces have all lived up to the sometimes rough treatment that my children have dished out and the cookies do not look any worse for it. **************** Price and availability **************** I ordered the cookie set from Amazon where it is selling at the moment for £14.26 with free delivery. I have also noticed it online at Play.com where it is slightly more expensive selling for £16.99 again with free delivery. It is also listed online at the official Melissa & Doug store but is listed in $'s there so I won't list the price here but it is roughly the same price as the price listed on Amazon. This may all sound a bit on the expensive side but I reckon it is worth paying for as everything in the box is of a very high quality and it is certainly built to last. ***************** Who is it suitable for? ***************** This cookie set is certainly suitable for pre school age children as my four year old and two year old have had lots of enjoyment out of it. They have fun playing together with it serving each other with cookies or using them in a picnic to serve their cuddly toys. As well as pre school age children I would say that older children will enjoy playing with this as well, possibly up to the age of about seven or eight. As well as playing with this by themselves I have found that my children also enjoy getting the adults involved as well serving them up with cookies. ***** Verdict ***** I definitely recommend the Melissa & Doug cookie set as it is a high quality play food set which my children have had lots of enjoyment playing with. It is all very well made and unlike some of the plastic alternatives these wooden cookies are going to last for a long time. The utensils which come with the set also add to the enjoyment as your children cut or serve the cookies and again these are built to last. It may be a little on the expensive side but I believe that with this set you certainly get what you pay for.
My daughter got this last year for her birthday and she loves it. I have always found the Melissa and Doug range to be good, high quality wooden toys and this one is no exception. It is a cookie set which contains 12 wooden cookies, 18 different toppings, wood knife ( similar to a pizza cutter), spatula, baking tray, oven glove, cookie container and a cookie sheet. On the back of the box are games you can play and the cookie sheet gives ideas of what designs you can use for the cookies. The idea of this cookie set is simply to make your own cookies. You can choose which toppings to put on the cookie and how many pieces you want it slicing into. You can then cook it and serve it out to everyone. The cookie tube is a good idea as you can store the made up cookies in there for later! The cookie dough has velcro on it so the icing can easily be attached or taken off. The cookies then get put onto the baking tray which also has velcro to keep them in place- ideal if the kids are busy talking than watching where they are going! The games on the back of the box are a good idea- they encourage simple things like counting, colour recognition and then memory games as the child gets older. The cookies are very realistic looking, almost good enough to eat! They are made out of a strong durable plastic which can take many drops! The velcro is still firmly attached and still sticking well. The knife is good for practicing their cutting skills and the children love the idea of not having me hovering over them while they "cook". It teaches them to use their imagination and to be creative when playing. This is a lovely little set and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. It keeps the children occupied for hours especially if they have a kitchen set to play it with. The fact they there are so many doughs and icings mean that they is never any squabbles about sharing.
You can buy the Melissa & Doug Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie Set from various places including Amazon where at the moment it is priced at £11.24 but it is usually £14.99. The set is suitable for children 3 years and over. It is not suitable for going in the oven, dishwasher or microwave as they are not real and is a toy. A few months back I was looking for presents to buy for my daughters 4th birthday. Then on a forum site I go on someone mentioned that this cookie set had been reduced to £5.99 what a bargain so I was quick to buy it. I thought the set looked great as we already planned to get them a play kitchen so this would make a great accessory and with the cookies being made out of wood I knew they would last unlike some of the plastic food sets they have had before. The set comes complete with: 12 cookies 12 cookie toppings oven mitt spatula knife cookie tray cookie set So as you can see you get quite alot for the money and is all made out of good quality wood. The set looks very realistic and your child will love playing role play games with them. My daughters put all the cookies in a line and pretend to slice the cookies up then cook them on the baking tray i have found they have been using the oven glove when they put it in the pretend oven. Then they choose the topping and either serve them to us or put them in the cookie tube which is ideal for storage. The set can help your child with there fine motor skills and learning skills they will enjoy playing with the set and counting out the cookies. I think the set is great it comes in a very sturdy box so is easy to put away for storage and all of the cookie set is bright attractive colours. There are other sets that Melissa and Doug make such as: Melissa & Doug Cutting Food Box , Melissa & Doug Birthday Party, Melissa & Doug Ice Cream Play Set and many more. Each set has lots of accessories so your child can enjoy and picture they are really serving up and playing with real food. These are all priced at a similar price as the cookie set I do think if you pay the full amount for the sets then it is slightly expensive. But if you look out for when there on sale you can get a bargain and it is good to know that the sets will last because of the quality.
