My son recently had a Jake and the never land pirate party to attend. As it was fancy dress I found myself searching for a costume for him to wear, and looking on the Disney store brought this dress up outfit to my attention. For the money we paid we received a tunic, headband and a plastic sword. There were no trousers provided with this set, so I needed to make matching trousers for the outfit. To be honest first impressions were not great; the size seemed to be way out as the tunic was absolutely tiny. I knew from looking at it that it would be too small for my son, and as there are only two available age ranges I was hoping it would be a little bigger. The two sizes available are 3-4 years and 5-6 years. My son is five so of course we ordered the larger size, but we still found it to be on the little small side.
When we put it on him it was not as small as I had expected, but it is a little short on the body. When we arrived at the party, the birthday boy was wearing the same costume as my son. It was a little small on him too, so without a T-shirt underneath his stomach was on show. This means it was just not a defect with our costume, and it seems that it is generally on the small side. The costume is an exact copy of the main character, Jake from the hit TV show on Disney juniors. It has the same belt detail, button detail, and even has a little loop at the side of the waistcoat to hold the sword in place. The tunic and waistcoat are all in one, which I like as it means there, is only one main body of the costume to put on. Of course, the costume did not provide trousers, but I found by simply ripping a pair of old black trousers I was able to create the matching set. It was instantly recognised by all my children, and I found they were very excited to dress up as their favourite TV character.
The headband is made to adjust to the child's head very easily. As the headband is made from satin, it really does feel soft against my sons head. Also it has a Velcro fastening meaning it is adjustable to suit head sizes. We find it will adjust to both my youngest sons' head, while it still sits comfortably on my eldest sons too. It is bright red in colour, and has the pirates skull sitting in the middle of it which need positioned to the centre of the head. The sword is a replica cutlass modelled exactly on the one that Jake has in the program. It is made from thick plastic, but as the insides are hollow it makes it very light. I like this because it means when my children are playing with this sword, and it manages to catch one of them it will not hurt at all. Also the sword can be fitted in a small holder at the side of the waistcoat. My children thought this was fantastic, as they can put it away until they need it.
Although the main reason we purchased this set was for the party, since then it has received a lot of use. This is actually one of the most loved dress ups my children have. All three of my eldest children like to wear this set, so it can be used for a large age range. It has been washed a few times now, and comes up just as well as the first time we purchased it. This costume is machine washable, and on a low heat cycle we found it came out perfect. It does not crease up, and look scruffy after one wash which is great as you cannot iron it. It hols its shape well, without losing any colour at all. This costume cannot be tumble dried as it will shrink, but we found that it dries very quickly on an airier anyway so this was not too much of a problem.
The only downside I have come across is that the sizing is small. There are only two sizes available, which is limiting enough. So to find that actually the 5-6 years costume was more suited to my three year old was a little disappointing. It does seem to be made small on purpose, but with a white t-shirt underneath it sits ok on little one, without being restrictive at all. I would recommend this dress up as it did provide my children with a lot of fun.
I was disappointed that there were no bottoms, but after searching for Christmas presents on the Disney site I see they now offer a full set for £20. If this had been available when I purchased our outfit, then I would have definitely purchased the alternative. Although this is a really great dress up set, you do only get one half of it. At £12 it is a fairly reasonable price, and my children do believe it is a valuable addition to their dressing up box. It is exclusive to the Disney store, and although a little small it is the high quality you would expect from Disney.
