I asked my mum to get this for my (nearly 3 year old) daughter last Christmas. She loves baking and loves pretend tea parties/picnics so I thought this would be perfect for her. It is very pricey in some of the online shops (£50+) but we got it from Amazon for £35.
***What you get***
This lovely wooden set consists of 4 buns with interchangable tops, one pink iced donut, one jam tart, a sliceable chocolate swiss roll and something else that we have never quite identified! The swiss roll is divided into 3 pieces which attach with Velcro and can be 'cut' using the spotty knife which comes with the set. The unidentified piece of confectionary consists of 5 different layers which are stacked to make a......vanilla slice.....with jam in it?! Best guess we've had so far!
The set also includes a two tiered cake stand, a serving tray and a rolling pin with a rotating middle section. And finally, a gorgeous little food mixer with a lovely bowl, a silver painted whisk which lifts up just like a real mixer. There is no battery in this toy (joy!) so they don't go round, but there is a dial which you can use to rotate it. There is also an apron.
Everything is beautifully made and painted. The finish and look of the set is remarkable. I love the choice of colours! I am sick to death of all the pink my daughter aquires so blue and red makes a nice change! She really enjoys serving up the buns/cakes, choosing which bun top everyone has and slicing the swiss roll. This set certainly makes our tea parties a bit more special.
Despite how lovely this set looks, there are a few negatives. The food mixer, though very nice to look at is a bit pointless and has rarely been played with. The whisk fills the (very small) bowl almost entirely so you can't really put any other food in there. I think if my daughter could put all the buns/cake in there, mix them round and then serve them she would have played with this a whole lot more. Instead, she gets a mixing bowl out of the kitchen cupboard and stirs everything together with a wooden spoon....and the lovely wooden food mixer stays on the shelf.
Our cake stand has broken. The central pole is screwed into the bottom plate, which is made of quite thin wood and the pole has come out, splintering the wood. This is a shame as this was a part of the set my daughter used quite a lot. I accept that it had been left chucking round on the floor and that's why it got damaged, but thicker wood would have prevented this happening - and the set is sold as sauitable for 3 year olds, and 3 year olds are not particularly careful with their toys!
Finally, the apron is not very well made. The stitching is quite shoddy and one of the ties became unstitched withing a few months of us having it.
I do love this set despite the above criticisms. Had we paid £50 for it I would have been very unhappy but I think the parts that we use regularly (the buns/cakes; tray; knife and rolling pin) are worth £30 - and I still hope that the food mixer will one day be played with more!
