if you like comics, or just want to take on the Man, buy this!

Let me say first up that I don't have to hide my face; it is purely optional. Honest. Who doesn't need a decent disguise or costume for assorted high jinks/ fancy dress/ costume party/ scaring the children (delete as required)? My mask of choice these days is this, the now popular 'Guy Fawkes' mask; it used to be the Scream mask, Ghostface, but the novelty wore off so I jumped shi...er, mask to this. If you've read any of my other reviews (and if you haven't..sob..why not?!) you may have picked up that I like my comic books. A lot. What a lot of people don't realise is that this mask began life in the British comic strip 'V For Vendetta', by Alan Moore and David Lloyd back in the early 80's. 'V' told the story of an unknown freedom fighter in a dystopian future UK, where fascists now run the government, and V, wearing the Guy Fawkes mask as a symbol of his 'terrorism', seeks to bring down the government and awaken the people. Its a great read, and is basically an attack on the then Tory government. The artist, David Lloyd, designed the character, including the mask. The mask entered the real world when the 2006 'V for Vendetta' movie came out, and as a promotional tool Warner Bros gave out free masks at film screenings; after being established in 'geek' culture (not a dismissive term, I'm a geek) they were then adopted by groups who appreciated the theme of protest. The Occupy movement wore them, the hacker group Anonymous, the Egyptian rebels etc. It is now the top selling mask on Amazon, selling in the hundreds of thousands. If you plan to buy one of these, make sure it is the genuine article. The official replica is made by Rubies Costume Company, but there are a million and one imitations out there, with wafer thin plastic, poorly cut eye holes and bad quality all round. Pay the extra couple of pound, its worth it. Looking at the mask, you can see why it is popular. Its a pretty eerie mask! Wear it with a hood for Halloween and you are guaranteed to scare the beejesus out of everyone! I may have done that at some point... Mask comes wrapped in plastic when you receive it, and is made from a thinnish plastic (resin?) but it is durable enough to survive a lot of being dropped; it is nice and light to wear, good quality paintwork, but I found the band that holds it on to your head a little uncomfortable, bit tight round the ears. Not a big thing, but worth mentioning. Whenever I have worn it (not at any protests yet, but the way this government is going...) I have always had positive comments, so I know people like it as much as me. You can buy an official hat and wig too you know.... Rather sadly, when I'm not wearing this it hangs in my study on the wall, next to my 'V for Vendetta' statue. Told you I was a geek...
