You realise very quickly that your little baby boy is growing up, when the fascination of programmes such as Peppa Pig, Mr Tumble and In The Night Garden are soon thrown to the side by cartoons such as The Avengers, Spiderman etc. As much as he still loves the more child like, sweet natured programmes from time to time, he would much rather jump on and off the chairs in the living room, screaming his head off and pretending to shoot webs from out of his arms!
For National Book Day this year all the children in the nursery were told they could come in in their favourite character costumes. Me being the half brain I am realised the day before I had to get him something to wear, when I realised EVERYONE was going in costume, and I didnt want him to feel left out.So off I ran, walking in pitch black darkness to Sainsburys to see what they had. As I got there, I was overjoyed that they had a selection of different characters:Batman, Hulk, Superman etc. Knowing full well that every boy in his class would be wearing Spiderman I begged and pleaded with my son to try something different on the phone, but he wasnt budging.' I want to be Spiderman Mummy! ' Great-no imagination. But with that, I grabbed the 3-5 year size and paid my £8.00 at the till.
What is the costume like?
Firstly, I think the sizing is fair and alittle generous. My son isnt tall but he is stocky, and this fit him fine.Dont think it woulld last a huge amount of time, but did the job for now.
The costume came in too parts:one being the mask and the other the suit itself. The mask, sad to say, got lost the same day he went into nursery with it on ( I knew THAT would happen ). But it was designed well.Too huge cat like eye shapes cut out for the eyes, which gave him plenty of room to see.The nose section had two holes ( small ) to make sure the poor little thing could breathe, and generally I felt the mask ( as it was full coverage all around the front and back of head ) wasnt too tight and fitted well.
The suit itself needs to be stepped into as its an all in one, and fastens at the back with velcro. Not the easiest thing to get out of when you want a wee for a 3 year old, but there has to be some downsides! The colouring is what you would expect for a Spiderman costume-blue and red, and has the typical spider sign on the front ( some variations Ive seen also have one on the back but mine didnt ).Around the shoulders and on the chest area there is padding, to make the suit look like it has ' muscles '.Lovely touch, but alittle odd at times looking at your small child running around with a pumped out chest, but all done in fun!
The material itself has quite abit of give to it and alittle stretchyand overall a great looking suit that any little boy ( and girl as Ive discovered with his sister ) will love and enjoy wearing.
Hes worn it afew times since ( trying to et my moneys worth out of it! ) and although it says spong clean only, I throw it in the weashing machine at 40 degrees. The suit is just as good now as when I bought it, so washing not a problem.
So what does my son think?
As you can imagine, he loves it!He doesnt appear to be restricted in it at all and runs around very easily. It really sparks his imagination being dressed like this, so gives him alot of pleasure. As mentioned, the only time I hear a whimper from him is when he needs to go to the toilet, and I have to help him get out of it, but thats a necessary evil.
Would I buy again? Yes I would but you do have to shop around in regards to price and quality, as not all of the Spiderman costumes are exactly the same in design.
At one time you wouldn't see my son without him wearing a costume, he was always wearing his pirate get up, or his Captain Hook costume (complete with Brian May wig!), just to hang around the house in!
After being invited to a fancy dress halloween party a few years ago, and him getting too big for his satin Hook trousers (splitting them down the seams!), i decided that he could do with a new costume, and i let him pick himself, so when he spotted this Spiderman costume he really wanted it (and my husband loved it too!).
The costume comes in two pieces, the main body costume, and the hood/mask.
The body part is a step into costume, that fits quite snuggly, but does strech enough for the child to not feel restricted when wearing it.
The fastening strip is at the back, so the child almost seems to put it on back to front, then can be securly fastened with the heavy duty velcro strip that runs down the entire back panel of the costume.
Once on the costume gives the illusion that the child wearing it has fantastic chest and arm muscles, with this being courtesy of a well padded and rounded section on the upper part, my son adored this part, strutting round the house wearing it pretending to flex his muscles!
On the chest there is a small button that the child can press which makes a small spider made up of tiny lights flash for a few seconds, this really doesn't add anything to the costume, and didn't really last that long, and when the battery did run out didn't deter my son from wearing the costume.
The mask is made from a very thin and light material, with nose and eye holes, and fastens with a small velcro strip on the back, this literally stays on (through choice!) for about 2 minutes, them my son's urge to talk and eat is too great and he perches it on top of his head, it does look good when being worn, but doesn't detract from the costume when they inevitably take it off.
When it is on it really does look effective, being the trademark blue and red, and covered with plenty of web detailing, it gives the illusion that even though the person wearing the costume is a midget (child sized! Lol!), it is proportion with the muscles as a mini man!
The costume is comfortable to be worn for long periods of time (which it has been!), and though isn't machine washable, is fine to be sponged down to remove any stains.
This was a really good buy, though did find that it was quite dear to buy (£20.00), but in hindsight has lasted him for a few years now (though he can't do the velcro up anymore!), with him even now having a wear of it!

I bought this costume for my eldest son when he had a 'favourite character' dress up day in school, this costume was entirly his choice and he was adament that he wanted to be a muscley Spiderman!
It's a very cool little costume, it has the usual Spiderman colours of red and blue with the black web lines over it, and the Spiderman symbol in the middle of the chest. It has the added bonus of having bicep muscles, chest muscle and a little six pack! It is a full body costume and the mask is a separate piece, it is all a lycra like material that allows it to slip on and off with ease.
Up the back you will find a velcro strip allowing you do do the costume up.
The muscles are a great little feature. They are amply padded but this doesn't cause any restriction in movement.
When my son put it on, it was an absolute nightmare trying to get him to take it off!! He wore it all day and even to bed! Luckily it can be thrown in the washing machine and it dries really quickly hung over a radiator.
I believe to have paid in the region of £15 for this and it's available on amazon priced at £17.25.
The only thing that lets this down is that it didn't come with any gloves, not that it takes anything away from it but my son wanted gloves and I ended up buying a toy set with the gloves included!
This costume has gone through the 3 of my children, although it is still a little too big for my youngest!
It comes in different sizes ~ 3 - 5 years and 5 - 7 years (I think).
In all I think this is a great little costume for any Spiderman fan, it's nice and soft to wear and the muscles make it all the more fun!
It has been worn and washed numerous times and it is still in great condition now, although the muscle padding does need a little rearranging after washing.
My son got this Spiderman costume for christmas and stayed in it all day!
His is age 3-5 but it is really long in the leg length. It is an all in one costume and the background colour is blue. It has red webbing from the knees down and the torso and arms are mostly webbing. There is an image of a large black spider in the centre of the chest.
There are padded muscles in the chest area and going down the centre of the tummy to the waist. There are also muscles on the arms, the padding is soft and my son loved flexing his arm muscle, they are quite realistic! The outfit is made from 100% polyester.
There is velcro on the back for getting in and out of the outfit.
It also comes with a mask. It is completely red with black webbing and also has velcro at the back to keep it in place. It has the black and white ringed eyes but no mouth. There are 2 small nostril holes. One of the problems I found with the mask was that the eye and nostril holes didn't match up. If my son could see through the eyes then he couldn't breathe through the nose and vice versa. Maybe he just has an odd shaped head but I've never noticed before!
Because the costume is all in one it was very awkward for my son to take off. The velcro was too tricky for him to reach so everytime he needed a wee we had to take the whole ting off and just leave it on his ankles.
Due to the padding in this suit the child gets very hot but there isn't a lot they can do about it. At the end of the day if a child is active whilst wearing the suit they are bound to get hot and sweaty, just don't make the mistake of letting your child wear it to an indoor play centre like I did, he was just a puddle of sweat!
The costume is machine washable at 40 but it did start to bobble after the first couple of washes.
This costume is great fun for any child who wants to be a superhero, I have found a couple of problems with it but nothing major, and for the fun he has had out of it I would definately buy it again.
I purchased this for my son a while ago; I paid just £3 for it from a car boot sale, although I expect it would cost a lot more in the shops.
Although it is supposed to be for 5+ I bought it for him when he was 4 as it was so cheap. It was slightly big for him, but I rolled up the legs and arms so that it fit him a bit better.
Once home he wanted it on straight away, with all the padding and rolling up it did take a while to get on, and I made sure he wore his clothes underneath for more comfort. He loves wearing his suit, and still wears it now he is 6.
He pretends that he's Spiderman, and tries throwing webs loll. He hates taking the suit off and would even wear it to bed if I let him.
The suit is very well padded on the chest and the arms, but there is no padding on the legs at all, which I do think would have been better, as most kids like to run around while wearing suits like that that, and it would give a little bit of protection for the knee.
The suit is fastened up the back by Velcro, which yes does come undone a lot and I have to refasten it. Your child cannot fasten this suit as it is back fastening, so an adult will need to do it for them.
The material is quiet strong; so far no holes have appeared anywhere, and no wear and tear signs. For the price I paid I am really pleased with the bargain I got. My son has worn this for over 2 years, and he does wear it a lot, and for no damage on the suit is very impressive.
Even though it had no knee padding, at least it does have some padding for that little bit extra protection. At least it keeps my son entertained for a long time loll.
Also on ciao under kineticspade xx
We have this costume and have had it for nearly 3 years.
I cant tell you how much we paid for it because since I have had children my brain seems to forget an awful lot of things.
The costume itself is really well made, love the fact that it has feet covers to cover your shoes and they look quite authentic. My son didnt like the mask. It pulls on like a hat but goes right down over the childs face and has 2 eye holes and 2 little nose holes but that is it and at the age of 3 my son was a little scared by this. So I just rolled it up to be like a hat. The suit itself is very well padded and I removed some of the padding as my son couldn't move his arms.
The suit is easy to put on besides the huge amount of padding and velcros up the back. Be warmned though the velcro stucks to the material and when you try to take it off it snags the material. I now make sure I fasten the velcro back up when I take it off to prevent this happening.
Although there are a few downsides this is a great dressing up outfit and has been really well used over the last 3 years. I am now trying to persued my son, who is nearly 6, that this is to small for him as it is really figure hugging but he is convinced it still fits.
A great costume.
Now I feel I'm pretty much an expert on this suit and other super hero suits as my son has had all of them, and has had four Spiderman costumes in total, due to him growing what seems at an alarming rate!!!
My husband was and is a fan of all comic and super heroes, and has unfortunately passed this love on to my son, and since about the age of 2 ½ - 3 years old he has been obsessed with collecting super hero figures, he inherited some from his daddy, but he has well over 1000 figures!!!! And it did not end there he then started wanted to be a superhero, hence the reason for the need of all the costumes he has collected.
The Spiderman muscle costume is a good buy, my son loved it, he'd put on the costume and he really believed he was a superhero, he'd be trying to climb up walls, putting his wrists out and pretending to shoot me with webs...... running around singing ....
Does whatever a spider can.
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies.
Look out! Here comes the Spiderman.
Is he strong? Listen bud
He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread?
Take a look overhead.
Hey there! There goes the Spiderman.
In the chill of the night,
At the scene of the crime,
Like a streak of light,
He arrives just in time!
Friendly neighbourhood Spiderman.
Wealth and fame, he's ignored
Action is his reward.
Life is a great big bang-up
Wherever there's a hang-up,
You'll find the Spiderman!
How sad am I, that I actually remember the words to these songs, I think I can name most comic heroes, their enemies, their girlfriends etc etc.....nightmare!!!!
Anyway back to the subject of the suit, they come in two sizes from what I know which is 3-5 and 5-7, any to be honest I think they are pretty generous sizes, dependant on how big your boy is.
Also we all know how messy boys can be, so I have washed and tested these costumes many times, I put them on a cool wash, and they have never gone out of shape or shrunk etc.
The stitching has always been quite good also, as like I said he was jumping about like Spiderman from sofa to sofa etc, we had one accident with the bottom area once, but that was when he was wearing his previous suit that was slightly too small, but I stitched it back up and it was fine.....and my nephew is now enjoying it.
One slight problem we have found with the costume is the mask is a bit small to grow with them, when my son was between 3-4 the mask was ok, but as he crept towards the five mark, it was far too tight and also the holes were too small, now passed onto my nephew, we have made a few adjustments, as he seems to have a slightly bigger head than my son did, so I have made the eyes bigger and added an extra bit of elastic on the back for extra room, so although it was a problem, there are ways around it.
I have always brought my suits from Toys R Us, they also did a lovely reversible suit that went from the red to the black Spiderman as well, but you can often find them in Woolworths, Asda and Ebay and Amazon dependant on stock.
