For my son's sixth birthday I had said he could have a fancy dress party at home and he decided he wanted to have a bit of a Mario brothers theme going on with his cake and decorations so of course it made sense that he would dress up as Mario too! I browsed the internet to look for a costume for him and ended up purchasing the Mario costume for boys which I think cost me around £15 for a medium costume but it is currently selling on amazon for £19.99 for the same size. It is made by rubies.

The costume comes as a complete dressing up set and so you won't need to buy anything extra to go with it so I feel it isn't a bad price really for the outfit. It came all securely packed in a plastic packaging as well with a picture on the front of a child dressed up as Mario so you are able to gauge what it looks like before you open it up which is handy if you are buying in a store.

The main part of this costume is of course Mario's dungarees and the costume comes as an all in one for your child to step in to so there is no need for popping on a top and then the dungarees as they just come as one. I think the dungarees part of this costume look really realistic and the colours used are pretty perfect for Mario in my opinion so there would be no mistaking who you are dressed as. The front of the costume features large yellow pretend buttons where the dungarees would fasten and these seem really securely attached to the costume. You also get a large peaked cap with a large white "M" on the front like Mario has and a sticky moustache to complete the outfit. The hat is great as it really keeps its shape even when thrown to the bottom of the fancy dress box so I do think this is a good quality costume.

This costume is made from 100% polyester but it actually feels quite smooth and soft and so I didn't have any worries about letting my son wear this one. He said he felt comfortable in the dungarees and it looked as though he had plenty of room to move around in the costume. As I said earlier I bought a medium costume which was suited for children aged five to seven but you can buy it in smaller and larger sizes but of course the price adjusts accordingly.

I really was impressed with how my son looked in this costume and he loved it too. The hat was a good size for his head and although looked a bit over sized that is the way it is meant to look I think. I did have a couple of little niggles though with this costume though and the first was that at the back of the costume there is basically one small Velcro fastening right at the top and then nothing else and so there is a gaping hole at the back of the costume which means you will either have an exposed back or need to wear a top underneath it and because the costume has long sleeves my son didn't want to wear a top under it as he felt he would get too hot. The other little niggle was the fact that the moustache was obviously sticky to be able to stick to the child's face but it covered my son's whole mouth too and so he ended up taking it off quite a bit and it soon lost its stickiness! It was also quite painful taking the moustache off as I did of course try it on myself! I did wonder if perhaps a moustache on elastic would have worked better but I suspect the manufacturers were looking to what would look best as opposed to the longevity of the moustache for subsequent wears of the costume. I think I would now draw a moustache on my son using eye liner or face paints to complete the look and I think he would be more comfortable this way too.

The costume does actually tell you to hand wash it but I didn't bother with that and threw it in the wash with other clothes and it was fine. It kept shape and didn't bobble at all and so I would certainly wash it in the machine again.

I think this is a great fancy dress outfit for fans of Mario and I would go as far as to say that I am sure both young boys and older men would love to dress up in this one! It makes an interesting and fun thing to dress up in and would be perfect for most fancy dress parties, Halloween or just general dressing up and imaginative play in my opinion.
