Toys R Us Robot Arm
Advantages: Fun for children, many uses, cheap, well made
Disadvantages: Very noisy and this gets irritating!
This particular toy is called a Robot Arm and is sold only in Toys R Us as far as I am aware. There are different types of Robot Arms on the market, but this is the only one I have found so far. The arm measures 20" in length, so it is a considerable size for a toddler, but it is very lightweight and easy to use. It's nice and colourful too, with a bright yellow handle, black arm and red grabber, so its quite unisex. The arm is made of plastic and seems quite sturdy. Harry can be quite heavy handed with things, but its withstood his treatment so far and doesn't have any damage on it, so credit to the manufacturers for making it Harry-proof thus far!
The arm works on a pull-lever mechanism and this is easy enough for a toddler to operate one handed. You simply hold the yellow handle in your hand, squeeze the black inner handle inside the main handle, and then the "grabber" at the end of the toy closes fully. The harder you pull it, the quicker and firmer it shuts, so I have had to teach Harry to be a bit gentle with it otherwise he might damage something with it! The ends of the grabbing part are plastic so aren't particularly soft, so caution must be taken when your child is trying to grab things with it!
Although its a small toy, it really does make quite a noise. So much so that we've had to take the toy away from him after quite a lengthy play session because the noise of the grabbing part being used really wears on you and Harry doesn't seem bothered by it at all. It's a very noisy mechanical sound and is certainly louder than Harry's cousins toy which didn't really make a sound at all! This is definitely a negative of this product. I am sure they could have found a way to make this toy much quieter, but as it is, kids love it but unfortunately parents ears will have to suffer because of it!
A great thing about having this toy in the house is Harry enjoys trying to help us tidy up with it! We tell him to put his cars away, and he stands above for ages, concentrating so hard on trying to grab the toy between the small parts of the grabber! It does take quite a bit of co-ordination to pick something up with it, especially something small but I think Harry is definitely getting the hang of it, and enjoys picking up all manner of things over the house with it. It's not advisable to pick up large items with it because it isn't that strong, and your child might hurt themselves with it if they strain themselves trying to lift something.
For the money, which was only £4.99, I think this is a very good toy, and certainly one that Harry enjoys coming back to again and again. Although it is quite noisy and can be annoying, I can't stop Harry using it too much because he has lots of fun with it and anything that encourages him to tidy up is a blessing in my mind! It's a well made toy, quite robust and good value for money. I am glad Harry likes this toy, and I'd recommend it to anyone who has an inquisitive toddler who likes something a bit different!
The toy is available in Toys R Us, and on the Toys R Us website, priced at £4.99.
Thank you for reading.
