Warrior King Child Costume
Advantages: Achieves good look, easy to wear
Disadvantages: Few adjustments needed, adequately (rather than well) sewn
A dress-up day at school! And the theme was Medieval times. As we'd been away and had missed the warning letters, there was no time for me to cobble something together for my son, so I went into a local fancy-dress shop to purchase a ready-made costume for the next day.
This Renaissance Faire "Warrior King" outfit was the one that sprang out at me and I paid £18.50 at the shop for it. It can be found online for around the same price.
The costume consists of a tunic, cowl with crown and boot tops, all made in the finest 100% polyester. The instructions recommend it is washed by hand in cool water, and dried on a line. I've only had to spot-clean it so far and that's been fine. It comes in children' sizes: 'Small' (USA size 4-6/3-4 years), 'Medium' (USA size 8-10/5-7 years) and 'Large' (USA 12-14/8-10 years). Because my son is small for his age, I bought the 'Small'.
The tunic has that velour-type furriness for the main body, with a shield design (on foam backed material for stiffness) sewn onto the front. The sleeves and bottom hem of the tunic have a silver diamond pattern to give a chain-mail type look. The neck has a velcro fastener at the back to make it easy to get on and off over the head.
The tunic was generously proportioned, so my son needed to have about 4 inches of the sleeves taken off, despite having bought the 'Small' 3-4 year old size. He was swamped and needed Mr Tickle arms! I shortened the sleeves with the judicious application of hemming tape (marvellous stuff) and an iron on a low "synthetics" setting. This worked well and didn't damage the material. I also had to adjust the neck opening as it was too wide and slipped on the shoulder, which would have shown his t-shirt underneath. I did this by quickly slapping on a couple of bits of stick-on velcro as a temporary measure. If I had the time, it would've been better to sew on some instead, as the stick-on stuff is unreliable, especially on slippery material like this. The original velcro fastener was just two circles machine-stitched through the middle, which while perfectly serviceable was clearly done for speed not beauty. The Boy wore the tunic over a dark t-shirt so that if he got fed up, he could take it off.
The cowl is made of the material with the silver diamond pattern with a cut-out crown sewn in. This crown is backed by foam, which makes it more rigid to stand up. The cowl worked just fine for my son, no adjustments needed. The edge around the face-hole was quite roughly cut-out & hemmed, although you probably wouldn't notice unless you were being picky.
The boot tops have the silver diamond pattern at the top edge, while the rest is black with foam backing to keep shape. There's a elastic stirrup piece to go under the shoe to keep them in place. These worked well over the top of my son's own black trousers and his black shoes to complete the outfit nicely.
Once on, my son looked unbelievably cute (Whoops, I mean, noble and war-like!) and we accessorised with a plastic shield and sword set we'd bought separately. He wore the costume all day at school, running about in the playground and doing his lessons, without any problems. He didn't get too hot and found it comfortable.
I think it was a good little outfit and would recommend it to anyone looking for children's fancy-dress.
The Boy says "I loved it. It looked really good and I looked just like a Knight."
Summary: Great-looking Warrior-King outfit for kids
