Advantages: looks lovely, cheap
Disadvantages: none!
Last year while my daughter was still at nursery there was a notice up to say that they would like the children to dress up for World Book Day. The idea was that the children dress up as a character from their favourite book. At the time my daughter was quite obsessed with The Wizard Of Oz and immediately said she wanted to go dressed up as Dorothy. I hadn't seen a Dorothy outfit on sale anywhere so I had a look online but there were no costumes that looked just like Dorothy's dress. A few days later I called at Asda and there was a Dorothy outfit! Obviously they were stocking fancy dress outfits from books for World Book Day.
The Dorothy fancy dress outfit is a perfect little dress for if your little one wants to be Dorothy, it is a really good likeness to the dress in the film. The dress, as with most fancy dress outfits has a sort of satin like feel to it and is made from 100% polyester. Looking at the dress you instantly know which character it is, the blue checked dress with white blouse underneath are almost identical to Dorothy's dress. The straps that go over the shoulders have a cute red bow just above the button (which is just decorative to make it appear that they unfasten) which is the only difference to the real thing. There is a frilly white apron which is attached by a wide white band. The bottom of the dress has a frilled white hem which adds a lovely effect I think. The sleeves on the dress are white and a little puffed up which again gives a really nice effect. The dress comes complete with a small basket with a black Scottie dog inside. This is a flat basket but just finishes the outfit perfectly. The dress fastens at the back with velcro which seems to be the norm for most fancy dress outfits.
The dress doesn't come with shoes so I bought a pair of red patent shoes from Next which she still calls her Dorothy shoes even now. When she was dressed in the outfit and had her hair in bunches just like Dorothy does I have to say she did look every bit the character and as soon as she walked through the door at nursery they instantly knew who she was!
My daughter does love this dress although she really doesn't wear it very often now as she doesn't want to spoil it. She has since worn it to a fancy dress party and really only wants to keep it for this purpose. I realise she won't get lots of wear out of it but it has been washed twice now and came out perfect and still looking brand new which after a day at nursery and a birthday party says something!
The dress cost me £12.50 but did go down to £7.00 in the sale at Asda. I am not sure if it is still available for purchase there, my local Asda currently have no stock but some may still have them! I highly recommend this stunning fancy dress outfit and think my daughter made a cracking little Dorothy!
Thank you for reading my review.
