Advantages: Lens quality, Frame, exclusive style
Disadvantages: Price, limited range of styles, only for smaller faces
These are the latest range to the Oakley X-metal family. Kind of a baby version of the juliet for smaller faces. I scoured the high street and the 'net looking for a stylish pair of Oakleys for weeks on end. Generally the prices are pretty consistant and the most you can save is around 15% if you buy online. Check out www.gearedup.co.uk or www.bargainsunspecs.co.uk ....the difference is minimal, around £20 on average. There isnt much of a saving and generally Oakley glasses dont have much discount at all At the time of writing, I did some research and the Penny range have only 3 styles or frame/lens. These are: Polished frame with black lens, titanium frame with Vr28 lens (brown/golden tint) and titanium frame with ice lens (reflective blue) My choice of style were the X-metal Penny with ice lens and titanium frame. First impressions: I was blown away with the quality and the weight of the glasses. Yeah they have a slight weight, but once you wear them, the feeling is almost invisible. The wrap around arms and spring hinges really makes it comfortable and easy to wear. There are an additional pair of nose-bombs included for you to personalise and lets you have that perfect fit. The frame allows for easy replacement of lens, or upgrading, if and when new styles become available. Lens-wise, I was impressed with the clarity and sharpness. The shiny reflection of the ice lens is misleading, wearing the specs, the level of tint is much greater. From someone who owns a few pairs of designer specs, Oakleys really do seperate the designer names apart. I've had no problem with extreme sun flare, especially from metallic surfaces. I can stare at them all day without any problems(although its not advisable!) The packaging also came in a stylish and fashionable box. Included with the specs is the warranty pamphlet, Oakley lens manual, X-metal (copper) penny coin and the glas
ses pouch. After spending so much money on these glasses, I would recommend you buy an additional case to store them. (the soft pouch wont protect them should you drop/sit on them and its only recommended for cleaning purposes). Yeah, even more money to splash considering the glasses cost over £200, but if you can afford them in the first place, its only a minor purchase. Because of the long arms, the shape of the glasses wont fit into any old case. Oakley does a range of soft (vault) cases, at a premium no less. Beware, the Penny range isnt for everyone, its just more suited to smaller faces and the spring hinges on the arms really help with wearing them if you got a larger head, but thats where the Juliet and Romeo range comes in. You really do know you've got something thats exclusive and special. People generally stare that little bit longer when I wear them. .. AC
