“ Brand: ASOS / Type: Lace Skirt „
I bought this skirt a few weeks ago when it first appeared on the ASOS site. I have to say it isn't really my typical style but I wanted something that would be stylish, practical and wearable with different items.
In theory, like jeans, I think skirts are great. However, in practice I find separates to be wildly uncomfortable and generally opt for dresses over anything else. I'm a curvy size 10-12 and almost always opt for comfort over style. In situations where I can get both I am always pretty delighted and I was intrigued to see whether this might be one of those beautiful moments.
The skirt is from the ASOS designed range which I actually think is rather good and generally at the cheaper end of items on the site. I've bought many dresses from their own brand range and have loved their simple and yet girly style. They really design for the masses so you won't see many statement pieces, though this skirt is further along the 'love-hate' scale than most of their other items which tend to be rather safe bets.
The basic design of the skirt is essentially and underskirt with a skirt over the top which has a hi-lo dip hem. That all sounds rather complicated, I know, but basically what you have is a mini underskirt which is made from a stretchy, lightweight fabric. This is cut to hit roughly the top portion of your thigh, depending on where you wear the waistline. Over the top of this underskirt there is an elasticated waistband with loose chiffon overlay. This flows out from the waistband and basically has inserts of a floral lace fabric in it. The hem of the skirt is dipped, as is pretty fashionable at the moment, so that it hits around your knee on the front and trails by your ankles at the back.
The design is very nice looking and there are clear photos and catwalk video on the ASOS site. My package came quickly and because they offer free postage (if you are willing to wait a little longer) I didn't have to pay any extras. The skirt I ordered was a size 10 which I thought was a safe bet given that it had an elasticated waist. It fit me perfectly and really highlighted my natural waistline. I liked the overall design but have a few reservations...
I have found that where the skirt sits naturally on my waistline it means the underskirt is very, VERY short. Normally I wouldn't object to this but because the chiffon overlay is very see through I would definitely worry about bending over in this. I also think that the length of the skirt isn't ideal for my 5ft 3' stature. The dress cuts a little low in the front and trails on to the floor behind. This wouldn't be as bad if I was wearing heels but as I wanted this for everyday use it isn't nearly as practical as I had hoped.
I'm still in two minds about whether I really, really like this skirt or not. I love the design and the fabrics are really nice. I think the lace and chiffon add an extra dimension sorely missed in other comparable skirts on the market. I'm wondering though if the fit just isn't quite right for my body type and would maybe be suited to someone a little taller?
The skirt cost me £40.00 which, though expensive, is not a huge amount more than you'd pay anywhere else. I also liked the design better than anything else I had seen out there on the high street. The delivery was great and I love that you can have it delivered for free, unlike so many other retailers.
Would I recommend? I would say absolutely order this and try it if you like the design because it is free to return items and as the delivery is free it can cost you absolutely nothing. I would advise though that if you are short like me you consider buying some towering heels.
Overall, I wish it was a little short over the top and a little longer underneath. I do love the design though.
