I bought this dress a few weeks ago when it first popped up on ASOS. Originally they had it in both purple and black, though by the time I saw it the purple had sold out and only the black was left. I thought the style of the dress would be very flattering and was also slightly unusual and so decided to order it.
I love ordering from ASOS as they off free delivery (if you are willing to wait a little bit longer) and you can return things easily and without cost. I barely have the time or patience any more to go shopping and find it far easier to shop online. ASOS has to be my favourite and the easiest of sites to use. They update their clothes regularly, they have great pictures and even catwalk videos which give you a really good indication of what the clothes will look like.
This dress is made from 95% viscose and 5% elastane so I expected it to be fairly stretchy material. For this reason I decided to order a size 10 as I like clothes to look fitted and have ordered larger sizes in the past only to find they are baggy or loose. Fortunately the dress arrived and fitted perfectly, it was stretchy as I had imagined and gave a nice close fit in this size 10. I usually wear 10 or 12 so if you are considering ordering it then I would perhaps opt for a smaller size than you usually wear as the material has a decent amount of give to it.
This dress is part of ASOS' own collection, which I have to say I prefer. I tend to find their own items are reasonably priced, fairly mainstream designs and far nicer than a lot of the other stuff on the site. This dress is a great example because it has classic style elements, like the sweetheart neckline, but integrates them in new and interesting ways whilst sticking to fairly neutral colours. The overall effect is a dress that could suit many people and many styles - a crowd pleaser I suppose.
I was pleased with the dress upon arrival as it looked much like i had expected it to, given the photos and video online. The dress has a square cut sweetheart neckline and 3/4 length sleeves. The neckline flows down towards the natural waistline where it gathers and then the loose pleats flow out into the skirt. The dress is described as a skater fit and flare dress as the bodice fits tightly and the skirt flares out.
I have a relatively bottom heavy (pear shaped) figure but with an ample chest so the style of this dress is perfect for me. It fits my cleavage nicely and shows it off without being too provocative. The skirt flares out over my slightly wider hips and bum and this makes me feel comfortable whilst highlighting my smaller natural waist. Though I've found the dress is perfect for a curvier figure I actually think it would be great at adding curves to a smaller frame because of the flared out skirt and the sweetheart neckline.
My main worries with this dress are the square cut of the neckline and the length of the skirt. The square cut I don't think is especially flattering. I can see why they have cut it like this because in order to have a sweetheart neckline on a long sleeved dress it is necessarily to have this kind of cut.; However, it is very boxy and I think it broadens your neckline/shoulder area making you look a little wider than you actually are.
The skirts on dresses from ASOS is a consistent and annoying problem for me, expect for when I have ordered petite items (which they don't always have). I am roughly 5 ft 3' and find that any skirt that dips below mid thigh just makes me look even shorter than I already am. I really need a dress to be cut quite short to look nice, unless I am going for a maxi dress. This skirt hits just above my knees and for this reason ends up looking a little frumpy. This obviously isn't a concern for everyone out there are most women are taller than me but is you are lacking in the height department it is important to consider this.
Overall, for £25.00 I think this is a nicely designed and reasonably priced dress. I do have a couple of issues with it but this may well be down to body type so I wouldn't want to put you off trying it (remember you can have it delivered and returned without any charge!).
