Advantages: Excellent quality, advertising campaign, wash well, student discount, lots of sale bargains
Disadvantages: Not overly feminine
Yes, last year saw the launch of some of the raciest and most amusing slogans on T-shirts from the ever daring French Connection UK brand (FCUK). I handed over my £22 or so for the priveledge of telling the world that yes, there was "fabulous cleavage under my Kit", or basically as the most of us will realise for giving yet more advertising to the promotion hungry FCUK. I've been buying things from French connection for the past 5 years. There is no doubt that their clothing for both men and women is high fashion, yet without compromising on the quality. However, one day French Connection seemed to wise up to the idea that by shortening their brand name to FCUK they all of a sudden gained a lot more publicity and ultimately business. With stores in the UK, Austria, Canada, the USA and Asia French connection's poplularity of late is increasing quite considerably. So, what is all the hype about really???? Well, you enter the FCUK stores and mostly they are white (well the 6 I have been in were), the minimal rails you are confronted by rails of well tailored clothing in quality material. The style of clothing remains extremely fashionable, however I have found that if you are searching for that ultimate evening dress FCUK is not the place to go. They are excellent for causals like trousers, jeans, t-shirts and shirts, however a lot of their women's clothing especially lacks the feminine touch that stores like Oasis and Warehouse excel at. For the whole urban casual look though there is no better place. For example last September I bought some of their jeans, having never owned FCUK jeans before I felt I was taking a risk, nevertheless the cut was good, as was the shade and so I decided to give it a go. I found that the jeans have washed very well and are one of my most worn clothing items. Although at £60 they are above the price of Levi's even they were well worth it for the cut and the quality. I could have bought a £20 p
air of jeans from Top Shop, however, the chances are that I would have had to buy another pair by now with all the wear that they have had. Ultimately in terms of the quality over time they will be a much better investment. FCUK don't seem to cut their clothes as small as some other similar stores, for me I can walk in take a 10 of the rail and know that it will fit. This means I don't have to carry in 2 of everything...just in case!! Quite a few of the tops in FCUK are in Small, medium or large, although I don't mind as they are realistis sizes once again. For those cash poor students out there, my local FCUK offers a 10% student discount, which well, doesn't make cheep, but every little bit counts I guess! By far one of my favourite times at FCUK is sale time, as I am always finding real bargains in there. I have drawers full of FCUK t-shirts that I have got for about £10 in the sale. FCUK has a web site which also lets you buy from the comfort of your computer, the address being wwww.frenchconnection.com and although it can take a while to load is a good way of checking out the latest collections. So, to conclude as far as I am concerned FCUK represents "for clothes you keep" and you seem to get what you pay for.

- 22/02/01 I absolutely used to love our FCUK store in Newcastle (where I was at uni) and now I have moved back home I miss it. I'll have to find somewhere else to spend my hard-earned notes.
