Advantages: well....

Disadvantages: exploitive, boring clothes, just read on!

Gap has probably got to be one of the most evil organisations around at the moment. It started off with a good idea ? relatively cheap clothes of good quality, and I think that this is what attracts most of the customers, but underneath the façade there is a huge amount of reasons why you shouldn?t shop Gap.

Gap are frequent users of near slave labour. That is, they employ young women and teenagers to slave for hours to make their wares. They do not officially own the sweatshops, but instead buy the clothes off of the factory owners, which covers their backs. They don?t let the authorities inspect their dangerous and unhealthy factories, we only know about the conditions from people who worked there.

Workers in China, Thailand, Bangladesh and the Philippines are not allowed to join unions, marry (as this might make them have children and have to quit work). They also have to work about 12 to 16 hours a day.

People have said to me ?well, about a dollar a day is quite a lot of money for someone over there.? Actually, no. They are forced to pay for their lodgings (tiny rooms which they have to share which about 4 other people), and they have to pay for food. After this there is hardly anything to send home to their parents, which was the whole reason that they started working in the factory.

This isn?t just a problem for the governments to sort out ? it?s up to us to go to another shop. If they can?t make money, then the governments will press charges against their conditions and practically slave labour. The only reason that they don?t now is because of the huge amounts of money that Gap brings to the economy ? don?t you think that they could afford just a little bit to pay a decent wage, smarten up the factories and treat workers in a more humane way?

And really, is the immense boringness of Gap?s clothes worth the pain that people have to go through? They sell plain t-shirts in uninspiring colours, unexciting jeans and ju
mpers, people lap them up because they believe that wearing the Gap logo will instantly make them cool. I say boycott Gap, or even better join a protest about it and hopefully within a few years they?ll be bankrupt. Unfortunately most people are more concerned with their own little worlds that it doesn?t matter to them about the misery of someone in a far off country?.

Just so you know, person who says "All companies do it" - you are wrong. There are a number of reputable, smaller companies that will sell you SWEATSHOP-FREE clothing and footwear. All you have to do is look for them. The prices are, also, ironically, NOT more than they are at the big, evil chain stores. If you really care about this stuff, DO something about it. Don't buy Gap, H&M, Banana Republic (owned by Gap), Walmart, Disney, Nike, or any of it!! Buy from people like American Apparel, Blue Canoe Bodywear, and Diva Lifewear...even Land's End is slightly better than the others. Don't give up...GET INFORMED!

After reading Naomi Klein 'No Logo' I became aware of Gap's explotation.
Most high street stores production is overseas in similar conditions you might think so why do people object to gap?
Gap is marketed as a wholesome 'all American' brand, its website displays the charities it helps,
Thousands of ancient redwood trees have been destroyed for the interiors of Gap stores.
Gap is a huge multi-national company with huge profits who produces basic garments for a pittence and make huge profits.
yes, gap is not alone in explotation, but no other company has as much arrogance or greed. That is why i don't shop at Gap.

If you are going to boycott stores you will have to boycott Tesco, Morrisons, Nike, Reebok, Disney and most others, EVERY store whether they admit it or not will be doing something we do not like if you are boycottying GAP you will have to boycott every other store too, what you forget to mention is that almost all clothes are made aboard because of cheap labour and i used to work in the UK in bad conditions with a poor wage yet i love GAP. I know that every clothes store does this no matter what they say, i will not mention who i worked for but they made clothes for a store that claims to be fair and has not yet been cricterised for bad worker conditions. A company that makes meat and vegan meals together so the vegan meals end up contaminated for Tesco's and that the working conditions are awful.
I'm not saying i agree with cheap labour just that i am not going to boycott a store because of it when most stores are doing it. You eat meat? You drink milk? You buy eggs? All these things are obtained by cruelty. But are you going to stop buying them? I didn't think so. You going to boycott every store? I didn't think so.
You wont stop all the bad things that happen in the world if you like GAP clothes buy them.
