Advantages: waterproof, wash well
Disadvantages: a bit chavy, hood not brilliant
When my daughter went to high school she wanted to fit in with the crowd. Apparently everyone else was wearing a Helly Hansen jacket and despite the fact that I thought they were overpriced I gave in and bought her one. If you buy a Helly Hansen Aden jacket from a sports shop then you can be looking to spend around £60 so getting a grey jacket for just £15 in a kids size was a massive bargain, I later also bought her a black jacket for £20. M and M direct and Amazon seem to be the best place to look for bargains but be sure to check the sites frequently as they don't tend to stay in stock at a low price. The kids age 16 jacket is a lot cheaper than the adult jackets but seems to be about the same size as the medium women's one which fits around a size 12 so if you are a smaller adult you can potentially save a lot of money by buying the kids jacket.
I've no idea why sports shops sell the Aden jacket as I don't know what sport you would play wearing one of them. It's a fairly basic waterproof jacket and the addition of the Helly Hansen name on the back and the HH logo on the chest bumps up the price massively. The jackets are not padded but they do have a mesh lining meaning that they are reasonably warm and keep their shape well although you would not want to wear them mid winter.
The Helly Hansen features zip up pockets, taped seams, adjustable elasticated cuffs, a hood which folds away and is made of breathable waterproof material. According to my daughter it is totally waterproof and does not let rain in even during heavy storms. She does not like the fact that the hood attaches by poppers to the back of the jacket as it means that once it has been taken off it is easy to lose. The hood does seem like the one weak spot of the jacket as there are gaps between the poppers and it is made of much thinner material than the main body. I like the fact she can securely zip her phone or dinner money into the pocket without the fear of it falling out.
I have been impressed at how well the Helly Hansen jackets have washed. You need to wash them without fabric softener so you don't ruin the waterproofing in the fabric and it is a pain to dry as the fabric does not absorb water so the water drips off the jacket onto the ground. I have washed both jackets literally dozens of times over the time she has owned them and there has been no fading of the logos and the jackets look as good as new with no fading of the colours or deterioration in the material at all.
I was not impressed at buying my daughter her Helly Hansen jackets as I thought they were probably overpriced tat but they are surprisingly good quality and last for a long time. My daughter has gone off the jackets now as she hates the chav look so the jackets have lasted longer than her affection for the brand!
Summary: a good quality jacket
