Although I am quite short I do love maxi dresses and think that they can look quite flattering especially if you wear them with heels. I have got quite a few long dresses but am always on the look out for new ones especially at the right price. I will always take this type of maxi dress on holiday as you can roll it up to put in your suitcase and they don't usually crease and you can wear them both in the daytime and the evening.
I bought this dress from Ebay and paid just £4.00 which I thought was a very good price. It is made of a stretch jersey and it is different levels of pink stripes. It has no straps and the neck is quite a low scoop and it does look very flattering as the fabric although it is stretchy it is quite thick so it doesn't cling too much.
This dress is made of jersey and it feels lovely and soft to the touch and is comfortable to wear. I have turned some of my maxi dresses up so that I can wear them with flatties and at some point I may do this with this one, but this one is the perfect length for me.
The dress hangs well and doesn't cling or stick to my legs even when I am hot and it seems to be a generous cut without being baggy or bulky. You could add a thin cardigan or shawl over the top if you are wearing it at night and might need something else to wear on top. I have got a short sleeved pale blue cardigan which I wore with it on holiday as the temperature dropped at night.
I have washed this dress in the washing machine at my usual 30 degrees and have dried it on a coat hanger and have found that it dries very quickly and doesn't need ironing. I think that this is a lovely pretty well made dress for the money and could be worn for both day and night time with a variety of uses. I do recommend this as a versatile dress for any occasion.
I must admit when "Maxi dresses" became fashionable a few seasons ago I was sceptical and wasn't sure about wearing long length dresses to the floor especially for casual occasions. However last summer I decided to give one a try and could not believe how comfortable and also surprisingly practical they are for summer days which is why I purchased another one for this summer. This was the Jane Norman Stripe Scoop Maxi Dress.
***Jane Norman Stripe Scoop Maxi Dress***
The description of the dress on the Jane Norman website is "Freshen up your spring look with our fabulous striped scoop neck maxi dress. Be bright and beautiful in this colour block dress, featuring scoop neck with thick shoulder straps, full length skirt and all over block stripe print. Team with an oversized bag and some sexy sunnies for must-have spring style."
The dress is a long floor length maxi dress with a vest style top with wide straps and a rounded scoop neck. There is also a rounded scoop back which scoops down mid-way onto your shoulder blades. The dress has large blocks of white and bright pink stripes, with smaller bright orange, pink and white stripes over these larger sections.
It is quite a figure hugging yet flowing maxi dress as it is made from 97% viscose and 3% elastane. It fits around the bust waist and hips and shows off a feminine figure yet is still long and floaty; albeit more fitted than many maxi dresses from high street stores.
The dress is available from Jane Norman stores and online from www.janenorman.co.uk . It is priced at £40 and available in UK sizes, 6,8,10,12 and 14.
As soon as I tried this dress on I immediately fell in love with it. The dress is a fantastic shape which is fitted in the right places however is still a comfortable and cool summer maxi dress.
The dress is extremely versatile and can be matched with a variety of accessories and worn for a variety of occasions. The bright colours make this a fun day time dress and it can be matched with simple accessories making it perfect for summer days. Alternatively because it is not too patterned it can be matched with more daring accessories making it a suitable choice for more special or dressed up occasions.
I personally prefer wearing a maxi dress with straps as I have found on the strapless maxi dress I own the weight of the material pulls it down so I am very conscious and find myself pulling it up every so often in order to prevent wardrobe malfunctions. With this dress this is not the case and it is very comfortable and cool to wear in warm weather without being overly revealing.
The material is figure hugging but not overly tight or uncomfortable even in hot weather. For those more conscious about their stomach and hips/ bottom they may prefer something a little less fitted as this does cling to the body more so than other maxi dresses I have tried on. I personally liked this about this dress as previously when wearing a maxi dress which was less figure hugging and floaty my Dad's first comment was "you're not pregnant again are you?" . Therefore it's clear to my supportive family that I'm not trying to conceal a baby bump when wearing this dress!
I'm a UK size 6 in most high street stores but I would usually wear a size 6 or size 8 in Jane Norman however I do find they are smaller than average sized especially on the top half, where 90% of the time I purchase a size 8 if I am buying a top. The scoop strip maxi dress is actually quite small in its fit even by Jane Norman standards and I had to purchase a size 8. Even in this size I feel that the material across the bust area is quite tight. I think this is a big disadvantage to this dress as it is only available up to a size 14. Therefore for those with more ample top halves they may struggle to fit into this dress.
My other criticism of the dress is that it is quite long. I am 5ft 5 and I find that the dress trails on the floor more so than the other maxi dresses I own so I find myself wearing with shoes with a small heel. I am a pretty average height therefore for those who are smaller this dress will definitely be too long or require taking up.
The quality of the dress is excellent. The stitching is neat and the seams of the dress are firmly stitched together. Also the material the dress is made from is stretchy but not at all see-through. I have tried on and noticed with many maxi dresses (when I have tried them on or when others are wearing them) that the dress looks thin or see through especially around the bottom area as the material is so thin. To the point that often you can see underwear through the dress when stood in the light. With this dress from Jane Norman the material is surprisingly thick which is beneficial as even on the white sections of the dress you can't see through it even if you are wearing dark coloured underwear (which I was when I tried this dress on in store).
Since purchasing the dress I have washed it four times now and it has not faded or stretched out of shape. I wash the dress in the washing machine but drip dry it either on the washing line outside or indoors. The dress can be tumble dried on a cool setting but I have found with many items of Jane Norman clothing that when tumble dried (even if advised) they shrink.
This is a very feminine and fun maxi dress which looks great for casual summer days but also for more special occasions too as it is so versatile and a great quality for £40. Although patterned with blocks of bright stripes it is less patterned than many Maxi dresses available on the high street which means it can be worn with a variety of accessories and you are not limited in your choice of what you can wear it with.
The simple design of the dress makes it very comfortable to wear which is perfect for warm summer days when you don't want to be wearing something uncomfortable or restricting. It is more fitted and figure hugging than many Maxi dresses which I feel can swamp your figure especially if you are petite but as with many Jane Norman clothing items the sizing is on the smaller size so prepare to have to purchase a size larger than normal.
