Advantages: Easy to wear and to care for

I love jeans and have worn them nearly all my life, my first being Levis when they were the best of the brands around at the time. Others that were available were Wranglers, Lee Cooper and Brutus but it was Levis that everyone wanted.

My first pair cost £2 9s 11d which, in today's money, is just under £3. They are a lot more expensive nowadays. They were available in just one shade then, a sort of stonewash. The most important thing to do with them once you had purchased them was to get them to 'shrink to fit'. If you lived by the sea, as I did, this involved wearing them in the sea and then lounging around on the beach until they dried, much to the horror of my mother who found it hard to believe that I really did this. If you had no available beach - or it was in the middle of winter when the last thing you would do would be to go into the sea - then you would wear them in the bath and then hide from your mother until they dried. The end result was the most perfect fit.

We knew how to get the most value for money then, as well, because, when they were no longer perfect but had faded to a lovely sun-bleached colour, we cut them into shorts, or cut-offs as we called them, frayed the edges and they did another couple of years.

I find it hard to believe just how many brands and styles of jeans are available these days; we're spoilt for choice now.
