When it comes to cardigans I usually opt for big, chunky knit ones, however as the weather is starting to gradually get warmer I decided I was in need of some more lightweight, summery cardi's so set out in search of a couple. I picked up a couple of cheapo ones from New Look and then popped into Topshop and came across this on the sale rack. It was reduced from £36 to £28 and there was no noticeable fault with it so I picked it up. Along with my student discount I ended up getting this for an absolute bargain price - £10 less than it should of been!
This is a long sleeved boyfriend cardigan, meaning it's got a relaxed fit and is a little longer than a basic style cardigan. The cardigan has a deep V neck with five small, white plastic buttons down the front, along with two decent sized pockets on each of the sides, on the stomach/hip area. The cardigan as far as I know is only available in one colour, which is an off-white, almost beige colour with light pink and silver flecks all over it. The flecks are very shiny but aren't over the top and are suprisingly subtle, they don't make the cardigan look tacky at all and although I don't usually like glittery or sparkly tops, I love the sparkly flecks as they set it apart from your average cardi and it's somewhat unique in my opinion.
Because of the sparkly flecks, it's very girly in my opinion and when worn with jeans it's nice and subtle and feminine while still been casual. However, when paired with disco pants or edgy leggings (eg leapord print or textured leggings) it really gives the outfit a unique twist of styles. It would look gorgeous with a floral dress or playsuit in the summer and would look nice with a maxi dress or a simple pair of shorts, too. It is one of those staple items in my opinon as it can be dressed up or down to match the occasion; for example for a meal out I would wear it over a nice blouse and a tube skirt, or some leather effect leggings and a nice vest for a more casual look. It looks nice done up but I prefer it without the buttons done up for a more floaty look - it is really so versatile!!
The cardigan is lightweight and thin meaning it's more for summer than the current weather, however it would look nice layered underneath an oversized vintage denim jacket, a leather jacket or perhaps even a barbour jacket. I've been wearing it just over a vest around the house and it's warm enough in doors. I like that the V neck is so deep as that way if i'm wearing a vest or t shirt with a graphic print on the front it's visible rather than covered up so again, it adds a twist to the outfit.
The material is quite unusual, it's got quite a harsh feel to it on the outside due to the glittery flecks, however inside it's stiff but reasonably soft and not itchy at all. It's one of those cardigans that feels nice when you're wearing it if that makes sense rather than feeling slobby. The cardigan is made up of 51% cotton, 27% polyester and 22% nylon. The nylon and polyester give it that lovely thin, almost stretchy kind of feel while the cotton gives it a generous amount of softness and a tiny bit of warmth.
The cardigan is machine washable and it washes well. I was concerned it would get tatty easily due to the speckles, however it washes really well and because it's so thin and lightweight it doesn't take long to dry either. Size wise, it's available in sizes 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. I have this in a size ten and it fits really well, it's by no means generous in size but it's not so tight/well fitting that it makes me feel uncomfortable or self concious. Length wise it comes down to around the middle of my bum, meaning I don't feel comfortable wearing it with leggings unless I have a long vest underneath.
Overall this is a good quality, versatile and very pretty cardigan. It's a little on the expensive side at almost fourty pounds however it will be a staple in my wardrobe for many years to come so it is certianly worth it. Available in most Topshop stores as well as via the Topshop website. 5/5 stars.
