      The Best Vests..!

      I wear a lot of vest tops during the summer months, and favour those with a broad strap to wear with jeans. I also take such tops abroad on holiday with me, finding them ideal to wear with shorts or skirts, as I find them comfortable and lightweight to wear in a warmer climate. In addition, I wear said vests during the colder winter months under cardigans and jumpers, finding that they work well when 'layered' in this way.

      For the past few years I have bought several vest tops from Matalan, with this review outlining my experiences of their "Round Neck Rib Vest" which I have purchased several times over the past three years or so. Most recently, I have purchased two of these vests last month from a local branch of Matalan, paying £3 each. You can purchase the vests online at www.matalan.co.uk, but I am unfamiliar with this site, so cannot comment further than this.

      There is a small range of colours to select from at the present time in my local Matalan store, including grey, white, black, cream and navy. These shades are what I would describe as more 'wardrobe staple' shades, which is presumably down to the store's collection presently being aimed at the winter months. Certainly, during the spring and summer months, I've been able to purchase these vests in other colours including shades of blue and green, for example. My recent purchases were a white and a navy blue vest which I felt were the perfect accompaniment to the navy and white cardigans and shirt that I have been wearing recently.

      The Ribbed Vests are available in sizes 8 - 20 and the price is the same, irrespective of which size is purchased which is very fair, I think, considering many retailers charge more for larger sizes. I am reasonably slim, and so I've always purchased the size 10 vest which fits me quite well; I do think the sizing is quite accurate for these particular garments, although it is worth mentioning, I think, that there have been occasions where some Matalan clothes have felt a little on the larger size, or certainly they have felt rather less 'fitting' than I would have expected. This hasn't been an issue with the ribbed vests, however, and I have never had an issue where sizing is concerned.

      Another plus point for me, personally, is that I find the 'sizing' of the Matalan Rib Vests to be absolutely spot on for my own preference; I am in my mid 30's, so the days of showing a little midriff when wearing a top like this one are behind me, I think. I much prefer it when tops like these have a hem that sits easily at my hips, resting just at the waistband of my jeans, rather than hovering above it. This is my own preference, but I do think the 'fit' and sizing of the Matalan Rib Vests are slightly more generous than some of the other vests I own from rival brands that are a bit neater.

      The Rib Vests are made from 100% cotton, and feel extremely soft to the touch. I particularly like how the material feels quite lightweight, without feeling tight when being worn.

      In addition, I feel that the quality of the materials and fabric used in these particular vests is rather superior to many of the others in my collection, with it being surprisingly hard-wearing and robust, irrespective of the garments' 'purse-friendly' price tag. In actual fact, I have stopped buying 'budget' vests from brands such as Tesco or Primark, as these generally cost around £2 and are nowhere near the same quality as those from Matalan. True, the Matalan vests cost £1 or £2 more than the Primark ones, but I still feel that this is an extremely good value price considering the vests' quality. I'd rather spend another quid on a top like this one and have it last for several more months than some of those that have proven to be something of a false economy from more budget brands.

      I've bought the Matalan Round Neck Rib Vests on and off for about three years now, and I have never felt that quality was compromised; For the purposes of this review, I've inspected some of the Rib Vests that were purchased during the summer months last year, and I can't see any signs of 'bobbling' on the fabric, nor is there any loose threads at the hem or seams. In actual fact, there is nothing that stands out to me as being significant wear and tear, and there is still PLENTY of wear left in these garments. I think that's evidence enough of the standard and quality of these vests, and it is one of the main reasons that I continue to purchase them in various colours and styles each year; you really get value for money here, and there are even occasional promotional offers available in-store for 'multi-buy' deals, making them even more affordable.

      Caring for the Rib Vests couldn't be easier; I simply pop them in the machine on a 30 degree wash and this seems to suit the Vests' fabric and shape as there has never been any incidents of stretching or fraying, nor have they faded in their respective shades and colourings. These tops don't need ironed either, if they are hung up when damp; they are ready to wear - without creases being evident - as soon as they are dry. This 'fuss-free' approach to laundering makes the Matalan Rib Vests the perfect garments for travelling or holidaying abroad too, as they don't crease easily when packed and always just feel 'ready to wear.'

      I don't have a single negative grumble to report when considering the Matalan Round Neck Rib Vest, which is probably why I continue to buy a small selection of them at the start of each Spring/Summer season. They are extremely affordable, whilst never compromising on quality or fit, and as such, I feel that top marks in the product rating score are more than justified, on this occasion.

        Disadvantages

        A lovely summer staple

        Vests are a staple of a summer wardrobe and so I purchased two from Matalan for £6. I picked a white and a black - very simple and easy to wear throughout summer with whatever trends and phases come and go.

        * Appearance
        I bought the size 10 of both vests and both fit well. I'd say the sizing is on point. The vest features a slightly curved neckline and doesn't reach too low. It sits just above the busy. The straps are lovely and thin and are of a good length - they neither dig in or look too loose. If you want a cleavage enhancing best I'd look elsewhere or at V neck styles. The shape follows a woman's body perfectly.

        * Quality
        As you expect from Matalan, the quality is not the best, but for such a cheap price it is hard to complain. I have worn and washed my vest six times now and it still looks brand new. The shape has not slackened and the colour has not faded. They are made of quite thin material though, so coloured bras under the white vest in particular are easily noticeable.

        * Overall
        Great staple vest at a very good price

        A fab wardrobe staple

        I don't often shop in Matalan but as my friend wanted to look around the new store that opened near us just before Christmas, I decided to go with her and have a browse.

        I came across these vests and decided to buy a couple because in my opinion vests are a wardrobe essential and you can never have too many. These vests are priced at just £3 each which I think is an absolute bargain. A lot of cheap vests are made of vicose however these vests are 100% cotton, which I was pleasantly suprised by considering the price!

        The vests are very average in design - sleeveless with a scooped neck. The straps are quite thick which I like as they are wide enough to cover my bra straps. The vest is very slightly scooped at the back and the scoop at the front is quite deep meaning it is quite low cut, but not so low cut that it's inappropriate for casual day to day wear. The vest isn't very long - it comes a few inches past the waistband of my jeans, so in my opinion it doesn't look quite right when worn with leggings

        The vest has a ribbed texture which is very subtle but it gives the vest that very slight bit of detail. I decided to get a couple of different colours; one white, one red, and other colours available include black and navy. With some cheap vests they can be quite sheer, but the white one isn't sheer at all due to the reasonably thick (but still lightweight enough for summer) material.

        Sizes available are 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22. I bought this in my usual size eight and it is a perfect fit - it's clingy but not uncomfortably tight. I've found with a lot of cheap vests they can loose their shape after a few washes, but this has been washed several times and looks pretty much good as new.

        The vest is incredibly versatile and can be worn with almost anything; skirts, shorts, jeans.. it can be layered under cardigans or blazers too and it looks much more expensive than it actually is - I really reccommend these vests as they're comfy, good quality and very cheap.

        A great top for £2.00!

        In the summer I love wearing clothes that I can basically just wash and wear with real ease. I live by the seafront and love playing around all day long but who then wants to have to stay in and wash and iron when you could be having fun eh? Not me thats for sure!

        I own a lot of vest style tops for this reason. Easy to dress up and down and really versatile I own loads from loads of different retailers all varying in colours and style slightly and the other day when I spotted this Peony coloured one in my local Matalan store costing only £2.00 a vest as it is currently on offer instore and online (www.matalan.com) from £3.00 and in an array of other colours too including orange, black and white.

        This top is ever so simple in style and really comfortable. Made from 100% cotton it is rather thin but not see-through either with a rounded but not very revealing neck to the top of it, sleeveless with wide straps to the top of it and its long length, sitting on the bum on my 5.8 frame.

        This has a slightly raised thin rib feel all over it and is block colour, in my case I opted for the peony color which is a deep pink. I like the straps to this being rather wide so that you can't see bra straps pepping out and so I feel smart and I love the fact that this isn't really fitted and has rather alot of give to it so doesn't show up every lump and bump I have!

        Fully machine and tumble dry washable this is a great, versatile item. Its well made and finished, comfy on and allows my skin to breath well. I like the way as well as that as it is a long length it doesn't ride up showing off my belly and/or back and the round neck isn't tarty either!

        A lovely top, full of quality and worth purchasing even if it isn't in a sale as it keeps so well!

        Only available in Matalan stores priced at £2.00 for a limited time only (and online too!).
