I buy a lot of clothes from Matalan as I always find them very good value and also well made. I have got quite a few of these vest tops and tend to buy at least one every summer as they are so cheap. The last time I bought one it was just £2 as it was at the end of last summer and they were in the sale but they are only £3 or £4 at full price which is very affordable.
These stripey come in size 8 to 20 and they are quite generous in size, as most of mine are size 14 and I usually have a size 16. They are available in numerous colour combinations such as the red and grey one shown and a blue and grey one which I have. They are made of 100 per cent cotton and they feel very soft and quite thick so you don't have to worry about seeing your underwear through them.
The straps are quite wide so my bra straps are well hidden and the neck is scooped but it is not too low at all. They are quite a good length so they don't ride up when you are wearing them. I find that these vest tops wash very well and dry quickly and don't need ironing so they are very easy to look after.
I have had some of these tops now for a few years and they are still in very good condition and have not gone out of shape at all. They are very versatile and you can wear them with almost anything. I would definitely buy another one of these tops when I need another colour as they are very good value and are nice and easy to wear.
Matalan Stripe Vest
I remember my first Matalan. When the chain first came over to Britain we had to join and the initial membership was £10.00 and you got some of it back once over £100.00 was spent. Somehow we lost our card and had to re-join, fortunately by then membership was only £1.00. These days of course it is just like any other budget style fashion store. I used to use it a lot for jeans, shorts and T's for my daughter when she was growing up, occasionally buying something for myself or for the home too. Over the last few years it has become a favourite store to pop into for me to stock up on tops for work and the odd dress and trousers as well. (taken from my Matalan Long Sleeve T Shirt review).
This review is for the (Long Line) Stripe Vest
I bought another one of these vests on an autumn visit to Matalan at the grand price of £2.00 and thought at that price I couldn't go wrong. I have a few of these now, but for the Dooyoo review it has to be the striped version I review:
Mine is grey and white striped that is lovely to wear under my other clothes on colder days or to strip down to for doing yoga or pilates. The neck is quite deep, and round but not low cut. When I bought mine in the sale this was the only colour available in this style.
I believe the sizes are the normal Matalan range of 8-20. The style is slightly nipped in at the waist and the top is French stitched throughout and is comfortable and hardwearing. The style is my preferred longer style that can be worn over or under the waistband is flattering to all shapes, but especially useful for colour weather to keep warm or for exercising when you don't want things riding up. The straps are on the thin size, but not spaghetti by any stretch, in fact I have just looked and they are graduated being 4cm at the narrowest point over the shoulder, the vest looks nice under a plain top with the neckline of this showing, it is higher at the back than the front, which is handy to ensure you put it on the right way around. The neckline has white piping that adds to the style of the garment and the fabric has a slight ribbed effect. I have worn it a lot over the last few months and it still looks like new, apart from a small hole that has formed under one arm, but that may have been snagged on a zip or something in the washing machine or the reason the top was reduced - I don't know, but it doesn't matter. The material is slightly thinner than the other style of stripe tops I have from Matalan, but it is a nice good value top.
I have washed my tops on both the cotton and synthetic cycle at 30 and 40 degrees. This top always dry's well and requires minimum ironing. Occasionally I have tumble dried it as well and it does not require ironing when it has been tumbled. The colours have not run or faded and I am really pleased with the vest.
Price & Availability:
As mentioned mine was in the sale, but I am sure Matalan will be selling them again in the spring/summer collection and I believe they are around £4-£5 usually and are only available from Matalan.
A nice vest top that is in the Dooyoo catalogue and one of the many Matalan items I enjoy wearing. Recommended highly for quality and value.
I wear a lot of vest tops during the summer, and favour those with a broad strap to wear with jeans. I also take such tops abroad on holiday with me, finding them ideal to wear with shorts or skirts, as I find them comfortable and lightweight to wear in a warmer climate. For the past few years I have bought several vest tops from Matalan, with this review outlining my experiences of their "Stripe Ribbed Vest Top."
I tend to purchase a variety of vest tops each year, with some having plain 'block' colour and others having either a printed or striped design, but in both cases, my preference is always to buy ribbed vests, as I find they keep their shape a little better than those that are not ribbed. Last year, I purchased two Stripe Ribbed Vests from Matalan, and I purchased two more during the spring of 2013, which had a slightly different design from last year, but still carried a stripe within their design. Matalan generally has approximately 12 or so colour choices to choose from, and although this will vary from time to time, I haven't ever felt my choice has been vastly limited and I've always found stripe variations and shades to suit my tastes.
The Matalan Ribbed Vests usually retail for around £4, but there will often be a promotional offer running, where two can be purchased for £7, and this is how I always chose to purchase my own vests as I am so pleased with their quality; I don't think I have ever purchased one by itself. You can purchase the tops from the Matalan website at www.matalan.co.uk, or they still have a reasonable selection available in larger stores, as far as I have seen when shopping in store in recent weeks, although I am unsure if the tops are available for purchase throughout the winter months as well. (Info correct as @ August 2013).
The Ribbed Vests are available in sizes 8 - 20 and the price is the same, irrespective of which size is purchased. I am reasonably slim, and so I've always purchased the size 10 vest which fits me quite well; I do think the sizing is quite accurate for these particular garments, although it is worth mentioning, I think, that there have been occasions where some Matalan clothes have felt a little on the larger size, or certainly they have felt rather less 'fitting' than I would have expected. This hasn't been an issue with the ribbed vests - striped or otherwise - and I have found their fit and shape to be quite spot on.
Another little plus point when comparing the Matalan Ribbed Vest to some others I own from rival retailers, is that the Matalan version is very slightly longer in its length, so it sits easily at the hips. This suits me, and is my own preference, as I prefer my vest tops to sit over the waistband of my jeans, rather than resting above or on it. This is a just a preference I have, but I do find that the Matalan Vests are slightly more generous in their sizing, which I prefer.
The vests are made from 100% cotton, and I have found that their fabric is of a very high quality, with it being robust and well-made. Indeed, one of the Stripe Ribbed Vests that I purchased back in the spring time has been worn very regularly throughout the summer months, and it still looks good. The vest in question is a sort of royal blue shade, and has a delicate grey-coloured stripe going through it all over, which creates a pretty pattern. For the purposes of this review, I've had a really good look at the vest close up, inspecting it both in and out, and I can't really see ANY patches of bobbling over the fabric's surface, which I think is evidence enough that the material used in the vest is of a good quality. Similarly, there is no fraying of the fabric at the hem or seam, and in all honesty I can really not see anything that would stand out to me as being significant wear and tear - there is still PLENTY of wear left in the vest, so I think this proves how reasonable their price tag actually is.
Washing and laundering the Stripe Ribbed Vests couldn't be easier; they can be popped in the machine on a 30 degree wash, and the vests seem to cope well with this method as they have never lost any of their shape or 'fit' or become baggy or loose. Similarly, I have found that their colours or patterns have never faded, and I really don't have any complaints in this respect at all.
I have found that if the Matalan Ribbed Vests are hung up and cared for properly, then they don't need ironed or pressed; they can just be folded and put away in the drawer once they are dry. True, if I am taking my Vests on holiday, I tend to press them up before packing them away in the suitcase, but other than these occasions I find they look just fine if they are hung up quickly and properly. In my experience, cheaper vests, or those with a poor or inferior quality will look far too crumpled and creased for this practice - they definitely need ironed. It's not easy to work out why I prefer to buy Ribbed Vests with a better quality nowadays.
The Matalan Stripe Ribbed Vest Tops have been something of a staple garment in my wardrobe for the past few years, and they are most definitely one item that I will continue to buy each season. I find the Vest Tops really offer excellent value for money, with their high quality and reasonable purchase price deserving full marks in the product rating score, in my opinion.
I don't often shop in Matalan for clothes for myself. I usually go in to buy clothes for the children because they are very cheap I find it really practical to buy their clothes from here because they grow so fast and get so muddy I don't see the point in spending lots of money on clothes for them to just get grubby. Whilst I was in the shop buying some new sleep suits for my baby I noticed vest tops in the lady's section and decided to buy one seeing as they were only £3.
Matalan is a large shop which mainly sells clothes and they are at very reasonable prices. As well as clothes there are also some toys, books and homeware too. Everything is a very reasonable price and this does usually mean that they are not the best quality. When we buy from here we don't expect to have something which will survive endless washes or tough toddler play so we find this shop really useful for just practical clothing and things that we won't need to rely upon too much! They tend to be in retail parks rather than in town centres and are rather large stores. Our nearest one is in Stockport which has a good sized car park right outside it too which is always a bonus.
Buying the vest top
I like to wear vest tops. I have lots in my wardrobe. I tend to mainly wear them underneath clothing but when it's warm I do also wear them on their own so because they are on display I like them to be good quality and look nice. One thing that I don't like about vest tops is the neckline, I am quite specific about the type of neck line I like and crew necks are probably my most preferred as I find high necked ones make me look odd and I really dislike scoop necks so when I saw that Matalan had a few different colours in this style I thought for the sake of £3 I may as well buy another for my 'collection' especially as I have been wearing these for the gym too. There were several colours to choose from, I steered away from black as it was spring and I didn't want to just wear dull colours so I bought a pale pink. I knew when buying it that it wouldn't be the best quality but I thought for £3 I couldn't really complain about it.
The vest top
This is a ribbed top which means it has little ribs in it that go vertically down the material. I like this effect as it makes it a bit more flexible and gives it that tiny bit extra detail which makes it a little less boring than being simply a vest top. The straps on it are slightly thicker than some other vest tops I have and I like this because it helps to support me a bit better. The size I bought was a size 8 and that corresponded well to other size 8's I have in vest tops, if anything it was slightly bigger which I think may be due to the ribbed effect. One thing which is obvious from this just by looking at the top, never mind feeling it, is that it is very thin material. It's almost thin enough to be see-through (but not quite!) but I bought it anyway as I don't mind it being so thin!
When wearing this vest top it feels comfortable against my skin as it's quite soft and it fits really well. It is quite long which I like at the moment so it goes to just below my jeans waist band which is what I want, I don't like short tops. Now the problem with the top is the quality. After about 3 washes this has began to bobble up some what and look quite tatty. It has even faded slightly, it doesn't look a good strong pink anymore but rather worn. I haven't worn it all that regularly so for it to only have had about 3 washes and look like I've had it about 2 years is a shame. I know I shouldn't have expected much from it seeing as it was just £3 but it does seem a shame that i t's not lasted any longer. I still wear this but only as a vest underneath my other clothes as I don't think it is nice enough looking to wear as an outer garment so I don't wear this for the gym anymore.
This vest top is very cheap and practical there is no denying that. For some cheap clothing for a holiday or something it's ideal but don't expect this to last as the quality will really let it down. I've managed a few wears out of it but now is the time for it to be relegated to not being worn on show. I like the shape of it and the colour was lovely when first bought but I don't think I will buy from Matalan again for clothes for me because the quality has really let it down. I don't mind when buying for the children as they don't stay in their clothes for long anyway but for me it's not really ideal as it defeats the object of being cheap if it needs replacing regularly. I'm kind of unsure as to whether I recommend it or not! I think you can make your own minds up on this one!
Whilst recently in Matalan I had a few quid saved up to get some bits and bobs clothes wise. I usually buy my clothes in my local supermarkets due to price and there not really any good shops close to where I live but have recently got really bored with their usual offerings which is why I ended up making a few purchases in here! This I spotted vest top I spotted costing just £4.00 and I bought it for layering up in these winter months and I hoped when I bought it that it will see me through to summer as well! (It did!)
This is available to purchase in sizes 8-20 and is of course is vest top in style with a scoop style neckline. Its long line coming to my bum on my 5ft 7inch (ish) frame and it has wide (ish) straps and a round but not deep neckline to it and its light grey and pinkish stripy all over and made from 100% cotton, so its nice and soft and very lightweight, very well made and smooth and comfy to wear without getting baggy as the day goes on.
It is fully machine washable and tumble dry safe and suitable for ironing and I have had no issues in doing any of that at all thankfully and although I have washed and worn this often it still looks as good as new and I'm really, really pleased with it!
I really like this smart but casual look this has to it, is great to wear on its own or being layered I even wear this when I'm working out or in bed with pj bottoms as its so versatile.
