Advantages: Stylish, modern clothing

Disadvantages: Very expensive if you pay full price

Before I moved out to the countryside where I am now, I lived for a while in what is probably the world's most fashion-conscious city - Paris. When I moved there I had absolutely no dress sense as I used to live in jeans and jumpers and couldn't be bothered with anything else. After moving to Paris I felt really out of place like that and decided to change my style. Mexx sorted me out.

Mexx is an upmarket brand of stylish clothing that since 2001 has been owned by Liz Claiborne. Liz Claiborne is not one of my favourite brands as I find their clothes quite dowdy but Mexx is not like this at all. Mexx clothes are very well-cut and sharp. They are classic but have details that make them interesting such as zips on a skirt or splashes of colour on a top.

Probably the best items of clothing that Mexx sells are their women's suits. These are modernised takes on classics and are either trouser suits or skirt suits, or you can buy one jacket and both trousers and matching skirt for variety. They come in classic colours such as brown, navy and black, and they are well made and fit nicely. The cuts of the suits are modern - the trousers fit low as do the skirts for example. The jackets often contain interesting details such as military style buttons or ruffles, or they are cropped or are cut tuxedo-style.

Mexx also produce a lot of classy but casual clothes including high quality printed t-shirts in long and short sleeved versions. They make nice dresses as well that are fashion-conscious and not overly feminine for my taste.

Prices on Mexx clothing are very high if you buy it retail. For example, a jacket will set you back over £100 and trousers about £70. However, the way to get your hands on Mexx is to find an outlet and visit, even if it's out of town. It will be well worth it. I bought many suits for under £20 total in the Mexx outlet in the East of England (this one has now shut but I believe there are others) and would take these suits back to Paris where they always got loads of compliments!

Summary: Get yourself to an outlet to get kitted out in Mexx
