I own a lot of cardigans as I find them so versatile and, with the Great British weather, they are handy to have pretty much all year round! I have thick and chunky ones but the ones that I own most of are these Boyfriend cardigans from New Look. They come in a vast array of colours - over the past few years there has been a decent rail area in my local New Look specifically for these - so I have the same style in a number of colours. They are quite thin but also have a full length sleeve rather than 2/3 or 3/4 so I find them suitable for both the warmer and cooler months.
They are priced at £12.99 but are also frequently available discounted via various offers too so it is worth keeping an eye out for these. I have two in black, a white, an oatmeal and a bright purple. As I say, they are quite thin and made of cotton - the sleeves are fitted but the body of the cardigan is much looser fitting and baggier, with drop pockets at the front which give the cardigan a 'hanging' appearance. It is comfortable to weat and can be worn smart or casual - it is very versatile. I wear these for work over a smart top or shirt and casually over a simple vest top.
I have washed mine many times and got plenty of wear out of them and am very pleased with how they have washed and worn. There has been no bobbling (I have also tumble dried on a number of occasions with no shrinkage either) and the black ones have also held their colour well - with no fading to charcoal or grey as a lot of my black clothes seem to. The only damage I have found on one of these was a bit of the stitching on the sleeve coming loose and this was after owning for over a year (and was easily rectified). Therefore, I think that these are of very good quality.
Overall, these are lovely cardigans and are a staple in my wardrobe! They are versatile, comfortable and well made - a bargain for the price paid!
I always like to have some plain cardigans in my wardrobe and am getting quite the collection now. This is by far it my favourite of the bunch for many reasons.
1. Its colour. Because it's black it can go with any of my clothing just to finish the look of or keep me from getting chilly without covering me up to much.
2. Its material. The material, although thin so can easily rip and get holes, is very soft. It doesn't feel cheap in the slightest regardless of only costing £15
3. Its range of colours. Although I only have a few, going into new look many times, I have seem a wide range of colours. Some very subtle and other bright and eye catching.
4. Its price. Its no Primark price, however for its quality, I find £15 to be perfect.
The only problem I have with this cardigan is its unfortunate thinness. Although this lets you stay cool in the summer but covered from the sun, this does make it easy to break and have unfortunately had to replace it a few times.
I would recommend this cardigan for anyone like me who need something small for breezy weather to keep cool or to complete and outfit.
Cardigans are a staple item in my wardrobe as I suffer from Reynaud's disease. Reynaud's is a condition that basically makes me colder than someone without the condition. Long story short I rely on them as a cover up at work and outside of work in all seasons. I wear them with dresses and I wear them with jeans and sometimes I even put one on with my PJ's on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
I am very fussy when it comes to cardigans, I want one that covers my bottom and it can be too bulky as I am petite and only 5ft 1. Anything bulky makes me look lumpy and as though I haven't tried. Anything that is flimsy I feel tends to lose its shape and look cheap on me so when I went into my local New Look store and saw this cardigan I had to buy it straight away.
I initially loved the clean lines of this cardigan. It has drop pockets in the front which are deep and this cardigan sits just under my bottom so gives me a feeling of security as no-one can see my lumpy bits or VPL especially when wearing leggings.
I purchased my cardigan in a size 8 for £12.99 in store. I like my cardigans to be slightly larger for comfort but because these where 'boyfriend' cardigans and slightly larger and slouchy I thought I would get my actual size. The sizing was perfect and I would advise everyone to get their actual size as going up a size may end up too large.
Because the cardigan has 98% viscose and 3% elastane it holds its shape all day. I find that even when I pull up the sleeves or my sons are pulling on the cardigan it doesn't end up loose.
I originally purchased the black and grey stripe boyfriend cardigan but have since purchased the charcoal and black versions as I love them so much. I think New Look change their colours and designs regularly as they do not sell the stripe one anymore but do have the charcoal and black cardigans.
Washing at 30 degree's is advised however I wash my cardigans at 40 degrees and tumble dry these when in a hurry and haven't come across any discolouration or shrinking. These haven't bobbled yet and I purchased my first around April 2011. These also do not need ironing if they are hung straight after drying.
If you don't already own at least one of these I advise you to head down to New Look straight away.
Colours currently available: Black, charcoal, grey, mink, chestnut, jade, navy, purple, red, brick, shell pink, coral.
Sizes available: 8 - 18
Material: 97% viscose and 3% elastane
Available: In store and online.
I love New Look, I have no problem in admitting my absolute adoration for this store. So maybe when it comes to their clothes I may be a tad biased!! When I sae this cardy I knew I had to get it. I am a cold blooded person in general. Even in the height of summer (not much in this country to be fair) I always have a jacket or cardigan of some kind. So you can imagine how my wardrobe is overflowing with these.
Coming into winter, this cardigan is perfect for a casual trip to the cinema or for a spot of lunch with the girls. It is comfortable, warm and goes with absolutely anything. I have worn it so far with jeans & Uggs, a dress & heels and leggings. Its completely versatile which I adore about clothes. I have worn it so much already but it doesn't seem that way as I change around what i wear with it. It fits like a dream also, not too tight but not too loose.
I bought one of these cardis a few months ago, after I saw a colleague of mine wearing one and saw how flattering it looked. The one I've got is in navy blue, but they are available in different colours including black, grey, purple and white.
The cardigan costs £12.99 which is good value because it's not just a drab cardigan, it's something you can dress up or down and can really finish an outfit off. The material is 96% viscose and 4% elastane. It's a thin cardi, so its main purpose is fashion and cosmetics rather than comfort and warmth. For anyone 'of a certain age' this may not be a suitable addition to your wardrobe because it's not going to keep you warm through the winter nights. The material is almost see-through although the colour of mine is dark so you don't really notice this.
The cardi is quite clingy but not in an unflattering way. It doesn't cling to bumps and lumps but rather just skims over the hips and buttocks and is very feminine looking. Last time I wore this cardi my fiancé paid me a rather nice compliment and said I was looking lovely and that he liked me in the cardi I was wearing (although this could be because he rarely sees me in anything except decorating gear or PJ's so don't read too much into that!).
As I pointed out earlier, this cardi is more of a fashion statement than for practicality. The cardi doesn't button up as the sides are stitched with a nice thick hem. The cardi has pockets but they are more for show as they have a funny shape (it's almost like they're sewn into the cardi), so you can't really put anything in them but you wouldn't really want to as it would spoil the look of the cardi.
I was a bit worried about washing this cardi due to the thin material, but I have found that by washing it on a 30 degree wash it is still in the same condition it was in when I bought it. You do have to be careful when drying it though because it can go out of shape if you don't hang it up carefully. I discovered this when my other half draped it over the clothes dryer by the neck, it was salavagable but did need a bit of tweaking to stop me looking like the hunchback of Notre Dame.
Overall, this is an excellent addition to your wardrobe as it can be dressed up or down, and comes in many different colours so will go with different outfits. I think this cardi probably falls under the smart-casual category, as it's a good one to wear when you want to look like you've made an effort, but don't want to look like you've tried too hard (for a first date perhaps). Anyway, I'm off now to buy more of these cardis in different colours.....
My daughter bought me one of these boyfriend cardigans from New Look last year. I always like to have a cardigan with me as I feel the cold a lot, even in the summer so I was very pleased when I found she had bought me one of these. I had seen other women wearing them around town and thought they looked really nice and would be ideal for me.
The cardigan is very lightweight, it feels sort of slinky but in something a bit like a t-shirt material. When I put it on it is nice and long and comes right down over the top of my jeans and covers up all the horrible bits. I like to wear long line t-shirts anyway and this cardigan comes down lower then most of them. It has long sleeves which you can push up if you get too warm. It also has two large pockets on the front although they are not very practical as pockets due to the way they are sewn and the fact that the cardigan is quite floppy, but they are handy to put your hands in while walking along. The cardigan feels lovely and soft against your skin, it has a sort of cool feel to the fabric which is nice.
The cardigan does not do up at the front so it is best for wear in the spring, summer or early autumn. Once the cold weather sets in this cardigan gets put away in the wardrobe as it is too thin for the winter.
I think the cardigan looks quite smart when worn, I wear it for going out as well as for normal everyday wear like going to the shops. It washes well, I have had mine for well over a year now and it still looks nice when I wash it although I do have to run the iron over it nowadays, I didn't have to when I first got it, I just used to hang it up to dry on a hanger. I wear mine with jeans (I always wear jeans lol) but all sorts of different tops. It goes well with T-shirts but it also looks fine if I am going out for an evening and want to wear something a bit smarter.
I am really hoping they continue to sell these kind of cardigans for a while as I would love to buy some more in different colours.
Since first being given my first boyfriend pocket cardi by my mum, i cannot stop wearing the style and have many different colours. They are prefect for all seasons - layering in winter/colder months and as a thin cover up for summer evenings.
I find that they suit my petite frame (5ft 2 and size8) however do also cater for other sizes meaning they are so versitle. They are designed to cling in the right places - to the arms - and skim over others - the stomach and hips area - this is because they just hang and do not close. Also there is no age range where the cardi will look out of place, again showing its versitility.
New look cardi's wash well and the material lasts without fading or the bobble effect. They are perfect for both day and night meaning value for money. A definate must have for any woman.
The boyfriend cardigan comes in a variety of colours, I have purchased in grey and black but there are other colours such as cream and white available too. It's length is good and reaches to below my hips. The material means that the cardigan is a bit clingy around the arms.
I bought this cardigan originally for work and found myself also wearing it out on cool nights with dresses.
Unfortunately due to the type of material my first cardigan ripped so I bought another as I didn't want a thick cardigan with buttons. I have found the threads around the wrist have become unstitched and I have had to cut them off.
However I do like this cardigan (hence why I bought a replacement and a new colour!) I get a lot of use out of it so it is worth the money! Make sure you try it on before you buy as it has slim arms so you might have to get a bigger size than your normal.
I bought this cardigan to take on holiday with me as I thought I would need something with sleeves to put on in the evenings to keep my arms warm. I saw it in the shop and liked the look of the style so tried it on. I like the way it fits but personally I wouldn't say it was 'boyfriend fit'.
I would say it keeps me warm to a certain degree but if it was really cold then I would need something warmer as it is fairly thin. I feel this is one clothing item that every woman should have in their wardrobe for those cold evenings when you need to wrap up a bit.
I paid £12.99 (then taking student discount off) for my cardigan and expected it to last for at least 1 year, not wearing it that much. After one week on holiday, I found that the seam on the sleeves had started coming undone which showed me that they hadn't been manufactured properly. I wasn't too happy but went over it with needle and cotton myself before putting it in the wash. This seemed to do the trick.
After having washed it a few times now, I can see bobbles starting to appear on the material which makes it look really old (which it isn't really) so again, I can see that it is fairly cheaply made.
I have since bought another in the same style because I love the fit of it, it isn't that expensive and I find it so handy sometimes to take with me if I am going to be out a bit late. Also, I find is folds up fairly small so you can fit it into a bag that you take with you.
I have just recently purchased another one of these as there was a hole appear in the sleeve of my old one. The hole didn't however put me off buying this cardigan as it is so reasonably priced and feels really comfortable when you are wearing it. It also keeps you fairly warm as it covers all your arms and can be pulled right round the front too.
This has been my key item all year round. It is great to cover up in summer if it gets a little bit chilly and to wrap up with layers in winter to keep you warm. Its also very handy to have in your bag on a night out.. just in case it gets cold or rains.. trust me!
At a very reasonable price this item is hot on trend, coming in over a dozen different colours now. The fabric is very flattering, it hides your lumps and bumps, and covers your behind.. an area I am very wary about! It does not drowned you though, it seems to stick in all the right places, going in at your waist and the pockets rest on my hips.
I have this item in 2 dark colours.. which I wear for work and 2 brighter colours which I took on holiday. They are very light Cardis so were easy to pack too.
The quality is good, although one of my dark cardis which I wear to work now has a hole on the sleeve.. which I didn't expect after a couple of months wear, the other three however, have been fine.
I would recommend this item and I will be purchasing some more if any more colours are released.
Everyone needs a boyfriend cardi to slouch about in. Black is the perfect colour it goes with pretty much everything so we all need one in the wardrobe. I bought this a few weeks ago and find it a really good price. It washed perfectly it goes with pretty much everything and is long comfortable and has two pockets either side. I find it washes really really well and doesnt go out of shape like most cardies do. Its not to heavy its really light so will fold easily. I find it goes particulaly well with jeans or a dress with leggings. Not advised to be worn with maxi dresses or any dress thts long, it really does not go. All in all i would definately reccomend this cardie its affordable its durable , it washes well and it not only comes in black but alose numerous other colours as well.
I buy a lot of my clothes from New Look due to the fact that they are cheap and there clothes have never let me down. I wanted a plain black cardigan for college to wear with my uniform, as it can get a little chilly in the mornings and wanted something lightweight that I could easily fit in my bag or locker and not have to carry around all day.
This is made from 96% Viscose and 4% Elastane, the fabric is very thin and definitely lightweight which I recommend not to buy if you wanting it for the winter, but for the summer its a must have. The cardigan has no pockets and the pockets are very subtle, I wouldn't recommend putting anything in the pockets as they aren't that deep and anything you do put in them tends to fall out.
I really like the feel of the fabric against my skin, its very soft and doesn't irritate which is great. Its also great as its lightweight and you don't have to worry about getting overheated. I don't tend to wear this on nights out, as its more of a casual cardigan. Its extremely versatile and can go with a wide range of clothes. I personally think it looks great with leggings or jeans with some comfy flats. It comes to just below the start of my hips and I'm 5ft5/6. Its comfy and goes great with my uniform. I don't find it great to keep me warm as it is noticeably thin but it does cover my arms and adds an extra layer so I feel a lot more comfortable in the mornings waiting for the bus in the cold, its also great because its so lightweight and fits in my bag easily, so no need to carry around a massive coat all day.
The only downside is that after a while the thread dint come loose, but its not very noticeable and is easily sorted.
I bought this for £16 which I think is quite a reasonable price, as its very fashionable and meets all my needs. Plus it goes with all my clothes so even better! Sizes available are 6-18. I went for a size 10 as I prefer the more baggy look rather than tight and figure hugging when it comes to cardigans. There a quite a few colour choices available at the moment online are: black, navy, brown and white. Also if you buy now its on offer for £11.99! Which I am actually in the middle of ordering another black one to replace this one, as I have had this one for about a year now and want one for next year just in case they discontinue in the holidays. So go grab yourself a bargain!
Overall a lovely lightweight cardigan, that is fashionable and versatile for a very good price! Highly recommend.
This cardi is brill. I wear it with everything from jeans to leggings to even my PJs when I bumming around the house. My boyfriends sick of seeing me in it but I don't care. You can dress it up too if you re going on a night out it really is very versitile.
Super comfy and really warm. Perfect for the cooler summer days that we've been having at the moment. This was a bargin buy and super top quality, its washed really well and kept its shape and colour.
I'd recommend this item to anyone and have told my friends to go and get one. Get quote alot of comments and poeple asking me where I've had it from too.
Think you can get them in otheer colours too - so might be adding to my boyfriend cardi wardrobe.
Can't fault it grab yourself a bargin you wont regret it!!
I bought this about a year ago and I'm surprised you can still find them in some New Look stores. Yes, it looks good, has a lightweight, airy feel to it and is flattering for curves. I prefer it to many of the bulkier, unflattering cardies I've bought in the past, but the item does have a few let downs which keeps me from getting another one.
First of all, it has stretched considerably, which shouldn't be so much of a problem with such a cheap little cardigan, but it has stretched unusually on one side only. This means that it hangs lower on the left side, and frankly, just looks stupid.
Secondly, it has formed quite a few holes, and I'm not that rough with my clothes!
Thirdly, it does nothing for you in the wind or cooler air, and I find the only use for it is with dresses or jeans, when I know I'll be staying inside. Even then, you'd rather have it off, wouldn't you?
This cardi's in the boyfriend cardigan style, or in other words is a longline cardigan. They're also a similar style to 'waterfall' cardigans. My cardigan comes just above my mid-thigh and isn't too long and definetly not too short; i'm 5'3 so obviously it will be shorter on taller girls and longer on anyone slightly shorter. I find it's best to wear with shorts as it's the ideal length to cover my behind meaning i don't feel too self concious! I've also found it's great with jeans, flats and a cute vest underneath. The cardi doesn't have any buttons so i always make sure it's a stylish and clean vest underneath.
It's definetly more of a casual cardigan than a going out type. It's ideal for summer if you want to wear something that covers your arms but is still lightweight and won't make you sweaty or overheated; when i say lightweight i'm not joking! It really is very thin and doesn't add much warmth at all unless worn over a thick t shirt! Definetly not a cardigan to be worn in cold weather. The fact it's so lightweight is handy though because it doesn't look out of place on a warm day as it's visibly not a thick cardi so doesn't look silly when everyone else is wearing t shirts. Due to the fact it has no buttons it's not the best option for someone who prefers to keep there stomach/hips covered up.
It's longer at the front than back, with drapey baggy pockets; these are used to add to the look and aren't really designed to hold things as they stretch easily. They don't hold things well as they're not very deep. The cardigan is a soft, stretchy, thin material and very comfy. It's very versatile and can be worn with a wide variety of outfits (see below if interested).
Style Suggestions: (may not be to everyones taste!)
I've experimented with this cardi and thought i'd share my personal favourite outfits to match it with;
1. Wear a size bigger for an oversized, floaty look. Because this cardi is so floaty you may find even in your size it's slightly baggy; if so, buy your regular size. Match with casual skinnies and cute flats, with a simple vest or t shirt underneath the cardi. This gives a casual and effortless looking elegant, flattering look. This also works without been oversized but i think it looks alot more casual this way. Adding a belt under the bust or around the hips or waist can work well with this look depending on your bodyshape.
2. Wear over a floral patterened playsuit/dress. The cardi calms down the outfit, keeping it casual aswell as giving a bit (not much!) of extra warmth. To add character to this look, add textured tights or knee length socks a similar/the same colour as your cardigan. Brouges look lovely with outfits like this!
3. This can be definetly worn at work, college, uni etc in the darker colours for a casual but smart look, and looks great when mixed with a simple bodycon or black trousers.
Obviously this isn't a fashion advice website but the above will hopefully give you an idea of the amount of wears you'll be getting out of the cardi; it's comfy, versatile, fashionable and can be transformed from casual to sleek and sexy when matched with suitable accessories etc. It's easily customisable and most people do have different tastes/wear theirs differently so don't let my outfit ideas put you off if you don't like the idea of any of them - it's a great cardi!
As mentioned above it's a nice, soft comfortable cardi ideal for covering up your arms in the warmer weather if you're not comfortable with them, or can simply be worn when it's slightly chilly but still warm. It's very lightweight and quick to get changed into as there's no buttons. The material is 96% Viscose and 4% Elastane, which gives it its stretchiness.
Sizes and Options:
UK 6-18, although the cardigan is quite a baggy style so i'd reccomend trying different sizes to match the look you're aiming for. Lots of colours available, the ones i'm aware of are: Black, grey, light brown, yellow, pink, white and red.
Price and Value:
£15.99 per cardigan. Personally at first i thought this was slightly overpriced, but after realising how versatile it really is was very pleased with my purchase and felt it was a real bargan as i wear mine most days! It's just so easy to sling on and still looks good. It goes with pretty much any outfit, and is suitable for the warmer weather unlike a majority of other cardigans. I have had mine for 3 weeks now and it's lasting really well, there's no issues with it wearing out and it looks good as new despite been a regular outfit. It's survived several encounters with the washing machine without any change in size or shape and is in my opinion very good quality.
These cardigans are available online via newlook's website (Newlook.com) and instore.
