Although I am quite short I do love maxi dresses and think that they can look quite flattering especially if you wear them with heels. I have got quite a few long dresses but am always on the look out for new ones and you can often get them quite cheap. I will always take this type of maxi dress on holiday as you can roll it up to put in your suitcase and they don't usually crease and you can wear them both in the daytime and the evening.
I bought this dress from New Look in the sale and paid just £9.00 which I thought was a very good price. It is black and white stripes and it has a scoop neck and is sleeveless. It is made of jersey and it feels like a tee shirt material and is very comfortable to wear. I bought it in a size 18 as I tried the 16 on and it was a bit clingy and the 18 fitted me much better and is actually quite flattering.
The dress hangs well and doesn't cling or stick to my legs even when I am hot and it seems to be a generous cut without being baggy or bulky. You could add a thin cardigan or shawl over the top if you are wearing it at night and might need something else to wear on top. I have got a short sleeved white cardigan which I wore with it on holiday as the temperature dropped at night.
I have washed this dress in the washing machine at my usual 30 degrees and have dried it on a coat hanger and have found that it dries very quickly and doesn't need ironing. I think that this is a lovely pretty well made dress for the money and could be worn for both day and night time with a variety of uses. I do recommend this as a versatile dress for any occasion.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good maxi dress but when it comes to wearing them casual - never. I only wear them to fancy occasions such as weddings, christenings, etc. Although, my eye caught this maxi on an online blogger who looked gorgeous! I instantly knew what to team it with to make it look amazing, so I headed to my local store.
Now being one of the latest trends, maxi dresses are in popular demand so finding your size might be a little hard in store so I recommend shopping online despite the delivery charge. The dress can be searched for if you type in 'Striped Jersey Maxi Dress' on the New Look website and the website image does not really do it justice. Costing £20 I find it to be a bit of a bargain! I brought mine from in store so I could try it on first due to length.
The dress can be brought in black & white or navy & white. I opted for the navy and white as I find black to be too harsh with my skin tone. When on, its so calm on the eye and looks gorgeous. It may of fitted to my figure but when worn with the right 'no vpl' underwear it looks spectacular. The dress is quite simple and preppy, the vertical stripes are quite slimming and it is very up to date with the current fashion scene. Its very casual and couldn't really be dressed up to become an evening dress at all so when buying, bear this in mind. I tend to team mine with converse and a varsity baseball jacket because I find its that sort of dress, but you could make it girly with belts, maybe a cropped denim jacket, necklaces and other accessories (like a pair of sandals). Ballet pumps do not really work well with this.
Size wise, I would go more on height. I am always a size 8 in New Look and the length fitted me perfectly. My friend is usually a 12 at the same height as me but she brought a 10 due to the length being too much. I would definitely recommend trying this on though.
Being 5'3 I did worry that it would make me look quite stumpy but it completely elongated my body. I have never known anything to flatter my figure more. When worn with a high waisted belt, it makes the figure more hour glass no matter what your shape due to the way it falls across your body. I have worn mine without though and it made me look like a pencil as I have such a straight boyish figure.
When washing, it doesn't ruin at all and can be thrown in the tumble dryer and washing machine - no fiddling! I always avoid tumble dryers because I find they make clothes go out of shape. This dress has been worn numerous times now and is still in good condition, no bobbles or out of shape bits. The colours haven't faded either.
I would definitely recommend this maxi to anyone looking for something fashionable but casual for wearing during the day. It is very complimentary and looks beautiful if you team it with the right things, summer/autumn staple!
The only thing I found to be annoying is that I often end up falling over myself due to the length but I think its just something I need to get used to!
If you know anything about fashion you know that this seasons dress is the maxi dress. There is a wide variety of styles, inlcuding this vest type dress, or the bandeau style, among many. This type of dress, from New Look, the vest style stripey Maxi dress in a jersey material is very much a more casual version of the dress.
I purchased the dress in the sale for £5. The material is not of fantastic quality, but as this is not a classic piece and I will probably only wear it for one season that is not a huge problem, as I don't need it to be made to last. In fact after about two months wear and washing there were some bobbles in certain areas such as under the arms. This was not a huge problem and they were disguised by the pattern. Nor is it unusual for this to happen to clothes. It is not desirable but not a huge surprise either.
One thing I would recommend, is that for maxi dresses to be a good fit they need to be the right legnth for you. A couple of centimetres too short and they can look 'silly' and a couple of centimeters too long and they can drag on the floor and get ruined. I know the changing rooms in New Look can be a bit hectic and stressful at times, but at least hold the dress up against you to check the legnth. It will save you a return journey to change it.
The dress isn't a particularly flattering shape. I only realised this after I wore it a couple of times. I think to make it more flatting the neck needs to scoop out a little more, it needs to cling round the hips a bit more then fall straight down. This would make it a much more desirable style.
Overall this was an OK dress for £5 but not one I would buy at full price, it's just not special enough!
Now I know Maxi dresses seem to be the latest trend for women this Summer but to be honest I had no intention of following that trend. Mainly because I didnt think that style of dress would suit my bodyshape as I thought you had to be about 6 foot to pull a dress of that length of and at 5 foot 3 I am not one of those tall women. But a few days ago when I was shopping with a friend I decided to try this "Striped Jersey Maxi Dress" on in New Look - I never thought it would actually look good I thought Id look like a midget drowned out in such a long dress but I was super shocked to find it actually looked good in fact I think this style dress suits my figure more than any I have ever found before so I am very shocked.
I got this dress from New Look in B'ham for £20 and it is also available on the website in two different colours: Black & White and Navy & White - I personally own the second one. It comes in a wide range of sizes but I recommend if you quite short like me that you get a size smaller than you would normally go for as otherwise it will be dragging along the floor when your trying to walk - usually in New Look clothes Im a size 10 but I got this dress in an 8 and it fits length and weight wise perfectly.
I dont think that the picture with this review does the dress justice as I think in reality it is much nicer. The stripes are much fatter and the dress on the picture sort of hurts my eyes and in real life its actually quite pretty to look at. The dress design is super simple but vertical stripes actually help to make you look slimmer - I knew there was something about this nautical style I liked and the dress is a very simple straight up and down cut but unlike most Maxi dresses this one does have straps at the top for added support. Also because of the simple design and colouring you can wear this with a lot of colours and styles and really mix and match. Ive got a lot of accesories that match this, belts, necklaces and little added embellishments work really well with this but I reckon the ONLY shoes you can wear to really pull this off is sandals or gladiators. I have tried it on with simple dolly shoes and it just doesnt look right but this dress, some cute sandals and maybe a cropped denim jacket (which is how Ive worn it out to a BBQ) is like the perfect summer outfit as the dress might be long but it is light and airy making sure you wont be sweating all over the place when its really hot.
I have what Id say is a normal figure im about average height and weight but my bum and boobs do stick out which means most tighter dresses look really silly on my bodyshape but this doesnt at all. It definately helps accentuate curves but it makes my waist look super tiny which looks even better when I pull it in with a high waisted belt. For women who actually like showing off their curves this is a great dress as it makes your shape go in and out at all the right places and flatters areas that you might not be so comfortable with for me thats my stomach and waist but in this dress I actually think I look quite good.
Even if you think a maxi dress wont suit your height or bodyshape I urge you to try one on as I was proper surprised to find this actually looked good on me as I wasnt expecting it at all. This has fast become a summer must have for me because you can create so many different looks with it and it looks great for most occasions. Its an interesting way to make casual wear much prettier and dressier. Highly recommended and it is totally worth the price.
