Numph Oversized Jumper
Advantages: nice shape, flattering fit, versatile
Disadvantages: poor quality (especially for the price), not particularly warm
Like most girls I love clothes, and I just can't seem to stop myself from placing regular orders with online super-retailer www.ASOS.com. I came across this jumper in the sales where it was reduced from the RRP of £50.40, to £21.00. It's made by the brand Numph, who I must admit I have never heard of before.
This Oversized Jumper came in a few colour choices, including black, grey and red. I chose to purchase the black jumper, as this is practical and versatile so I can wear it with most items in my wardrobe. I bought this in my size (UK 10) and as it is intentionally oversized it has a loose, baggy fit which is very comfortable. What I like about this cut is that although it is oversized, there are also a few neat design details that give a flattering fit that will suit any body shape. The arms are loose with a bell shaped sleeve, but there is a ribbed band at the cuff which pulls the sleeve back in to give a nice fit around the wrist. This also means that I can wear the jumper with the sleeves pushed up to my elbows and they stay in place nicely. There is a similar ribbed band at the lower edge of the jumper which pulls it in so that again it can be worn at different lengths. The jumper falls to my mid-thigh when fully pulled down, and the hem tucks in neatly to create a nice shape rather than just having this loose fit jumper end up looking like a sack of spuds! I also like to fold the bottom edge of the jumper up inside to my waist line, so that it gives a sort of tucked-in look and the ribbed hem keeps it in place.
The jumper has a row of eyelets where the sleeves join the body and these are a nice detail but can look a little odd depending on if you're wearing another layer underneath, or if you just leave bare skin showing through. I have worn this jumper without an under-layer before and find that it's not actually very warm. I live near the seaside so when I've been outside and there's the usual strong sea breeze, it seems to cut straight through the fabric of the jumper and leaves me feeling freezing cold! The stitch pattern of the jumper is not dense enough to keep me warm and protected against the wind when outside. The neckline of the jumper is also a bit difficult to work with, as it looks nice when worn without an under-layer, but if I have a t-shirt or something similar underneath, it tends to sit in a way that the lines at the front and back of the neck reveals the top and it can look a bit messy. The neckline suits something more structured like a blouse top with a nice collar to add detail in this area.
I do like the cut and the shape of this jumper and it is incredibly versatile as I can wear it in so many different ways. It's perfect for layering over a basic jeans and tee combo, and is nice and cosy when teamed with a scarf or cowl to provide some extra coverage around the neckline. I also team it with some of my fun patterned leggings so that they stand out against this plain black jumper and look even more eye-catching. I've even worn it with cute floaty dresses and ankle boots to create an interesting combination of juxtaposed fabrics and textures.
The jumper has an all-over textured detail which to my eye looks like some variation of the brioche stitch. It is simple but attractive, although I have noticed that over time it has not worn well. I've had this jumper for only four months and already there are several places where the stitches have pulled out of shape or been snagged and I cannot re-adjust them into the right shape again so it looks like there are noticeable defects in the stitches. The jumper is made of 100% acrylic which is not the best quality material, and it does feel quite cheap and synthetic to the touch. On the positive side it can be machine washed but I am disappointed that it is starting to look shabby already as I would usually expect my pieces of knitwear to be the longest lasting garments in my wardrobe.
Overall I'm a bit split on my feelings for this jumper. I love the way that is fits as it is very flattering and is easily wearable with a whole range of different outfits. However, it's not very warm and has worn badly even only after a few months use. I'm not impressed by the acrylic fabric and think that at full RRP it is very overpriced. It's not too bad for the price I paid, but I think next time I would look for a similar style jumper in a natural fibre fabric that would offer more warmth and durability.
Summary: Lovely style but not the best quality
