Did you know that it was once considered indecent if a lady wore knickers? It’s true, y’know. Up until about the middle of the 19th century, when Queen Victoria was said to wear “knickerbockers”, the only acceptable thing for a lady to wear under her skirts was nothing. Not a stitch! How the tables have turned!

Like most women today, I wear knickers. I also wear bras. Now I wouldn’t mind being one of those women who can run around without a bra and hardly notice the difference, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, depending on how you see things) nature designed me with a reasonably ample bosom.

If there are two things I really hate, it’s knickers that insist on becoming thongs when they weren’t designed that way, and bras that a) make deep, nasty red marks on your shoulders, or b) make deep, nasty red marks under your boobs.

You’re with me on this, aren’t you ladies?

Ever since I started wearing a 30AA and my mum let me wear bikini knickers, I’ve been on a quest to find the perfect underwear. Lacy bits of flimsy material are fine if there’s a chance of being seduced, but on the whole, I want comfort. Plain white cotton-type undies can be sexy too, y’know. Comfortable isn’t necessarily boring.

During my quest for comfort, I came across SLOGGI. Well, if the truth be known, I wasn’t actually looking for a comfortable bra at all at the time. I just happened to be on a ferry between Norway and Denmark (one of those weekend trip type things) and had forgotten to take a change of underwear. There was no other choice than to buy something from the ferry gift shop. There were lots of nice lacy bits there, but the prices were ridiculous and way beyond what I had left in my purse, so my eyes fell on a simple white bra that was reasonably priced.

A quick search of the shelves turned up a pair of knickers in the same style and off I w
ent to the checkout.

Back in my cabin, I slipped into my new undergarments. Wonder of wonders, they were comfortable!

Since then I’ve tried quite a few of the styles that SLOGGI offer, from the original “classic” range to their “chic” range. My favourite is definitely the basic “classic” range. They’re extremely comfortable and as the bras have no seams, they’re great for wearing under t-shirts and the snug fit of the briefs means that panty-lines are kept to a minimum. Let’s face it, buttock-bulges just aren’t attractive are they?

The maxi style is available up to a size 30, so no matter what your size or shape, you’ll most likely find SLOGGI to be comfortable. Other styles available are Midi, Mini, String, Tanga, Tai and Long (half way down the thigh and no, I don’t wear them). The bras cover sizes 30AA-38C in the soft-cup design and 32A-38D/40C if you prefer the under-wired version. I’m actually a 40D, but because of the 95% cotton/5% lycra blend, I can get away with using a C cup comfortably. As well as black and white, “classic” SLOGGI are available in “natural”, which as you’d probably guess, is skin-toned.

If you prefer a little more femininity, the “chic” range, which has pretty lace panels and available in black or white, is worth trying. Maxi briefs stop at size 22. Midi and Tai styles are also available up to size 20. Again, there are two styles of bra available, soft-cup and under-wired, both available in sizes 32A-38D/40C.

The 300 series is a good alternative for those who like the pull-on sports bras rather than conventional bras. The double band below the breasts is very soft and comfortable making them a good “sleep-bra” for those who suffer with tender breasts. Sizes are 32-40 (not cup size in this style). Matching briefs are available up to size 22 in Maxi, size 16
in Tai and String. All styles are available in both black and white.

After three babies, I sometimes feel the need for a little extra control across the tum. SLOGGI “control” briefs have a double panel at the front to hold in that extra fleshy bit that I’ve been “blessed” with. These are made of 94% cotton/6% elastane (rather than lycra) for extra control. Maxi is available up to size 26, Tai up to size 20. Again, these are available in black and white.

There are a few other styles but I don’t think it’s necessary to cover them all here, especially as I haven’t tried the others.

SLOGGI underwear isn’t the cheapest on the market but they’re not ridiculously expensive either. Prices start at about £6 for a pair of “classic” briefs, to £9 for “control” briefs. Bras start at about £9 for the 300 sports bra, £12 for an underwired “classic” bra and £15 for an under-wired “chic” bra. They’re well worth the money though as they really do wash and wear well, as well as being soft and comfy.

As some women (and men, but they wouldn’t be looking for ladies undies would they? Oh well… perhaps every fourth Sunday or something if they’re “that way inclined”) suffer from a latex protein allergy, it’s important that the lycra used in clothing doesn’t actually touch the skin. SLOGGI spin their lycra with cotton, which ensures that this doesn’t happen. This also gives the added bonus of underwear that will keep its shape longer as the lycra doesn’t wear down so quickly.

The bras won’t push you up and boost your cleavage, but if you’re looking for comfort and quality, SLOGGI are well worth trying. They’ll still be looking good next year, and probably the year after, so you certainly won’t have to worry about being caught in baggy, washed-out looking
undies. And even though I do prefer the “Maxi” variety under trousers and tight skirts, the “Tai” style is a good alternative if you don’t want to find yourself doing a Bridget Jones number.
