“ Brand: Soul Cal Deluxe / Type: Hotpants „
As the proud owner of many pairs of republic hot pants, I am not one to preach about the 'appropriate length' of shorts nowadays, although admittedly they are turning more and more like knickers as the style develops.
The rather indecent length of these shorts isn't what bothers me, but it is the purposefully included rips on the front of the shorts that leave a lot to desire. I have had these shorts for little over 2 weeks and already the rips are wearing away to my legs and, quite honestly, it is beginning to look rude! It seems to me that the designer has payed more attention to the belt (which actually is very nice, fashionable and tactile) instead of the shorts themselves which appear to be of very poor quality.
Shorts very similar to these are available much cheaper and in better condition in other areas of the web, and so I would personally recommend starting there instead.
I love wearing shorts in the summer when I can find a pair which fit comfortably and aren't too short. I especially love the look of denim shorts, how-ever the one's I have tried either come up very short and my bum cheeks end up hanging out or they just make me look frumpy (yes that's possible even on a slim person!). Seeing as it was pay-day for me this week off I popped to shops to treat myself to something new. All the shops seem to be getting all their summer clothing in and I've noticed shorts and bright colours in shop windows. I occasionally pop into my local Republic store as I think their clothing is of good quality and reasonably priced. They had a large selection of denim shorts in here in various colours and different fits such as high waisted and knee length shorts. I wanted something that I could wear in the day casually with flip flops for when the weather warms up.
* ~ * THE SHORTS * ~ *
The shorts grabbed my attention first because they were at the front of the store when I walked in. I loved the fact they looked a little rock chick with rips to the front of them and the fact you can see the inner pockets as well which are black and has a white swallow bird print on them. The belt which obviously came with the shorts also grabbed my attention as it was colourful and stood out due to the bright stripes on it. I tend to vary in trouser and tops sizes depending on where I shop. When buying trousers I do tend to get one size bigger, so I feel comfortable in them and that I have room to move. Seeing as I was buying shorts, I didn't want them to fit too tightly, especially in the summer as they would just get too hot if they were too tight. I am normally a size 10 in trousers, so I went for a size 12 so these would sit on my hips comfortably and so they weren't too tight around my bum! The shorts are made from dark wash denim rather than a light colour. On the back of the shorts, there is also rip detailing to each of the back pockets, how-ever this is only on the pockets so you don't have to worry about people being able to see your knickers through the rips! The shorts are priced at £30 which I think is reasonable considering they are made from denim and you also get the belt with the shorts too. They are available to buy from a size 6 up to a size 14 and you can purchase these from their website which is www.republic.co.uk. The shorts are made by Soul Cal whom is Republic's own brand of clothing so you won't find this range anywhere else apart from Republic.
As the weather hasn't been particularly warm, I have been wearing the shorts with black tights, which are great for wearing during the day when I go to my local pub or out shopping. The shorts are button up so they have no zip. The shorts are very comfortable to wear, but also give me room to move about. If I had gone for normal size which is a size 10 I think these would have been slightly too tight around the waist and the bum. The belt makes the shorts a bit more interesting and gives the shorts a bit more detail. You can of course take the belt off and wear it a pair of jeans or put the belt on another pair of shorts, how-ever I haven't yet done this. The belt is made from elastic and brown leather look material, so is very casual looking. The shorts do fit quite short, how-ever they do cover my bum, without the bottom of my cheeks hanging out when I walk which is definitely a good thing as the shorts do look as though they may be a bit too short. The shorts are easily washed in the washing machine and are best if air dried. (the belt is not washable so make sure you remove this!). You can probably tumble dry thes shorts, how-ever I find this normally shrinks jeans and will probably make them a little tighter than what they originally were. When the weather warms up or when I go away I will be sure to take the shorts with me as these are going to look great in the summer with a casual t-shirt/vest and flip flops or canvas style shoes (these would look great with the New Look Deck shoes, I have previously reviewed).
The overall quality of the shorts is very good and I think the price is reasonable as I have been in many shops where denim shorts are £30 and these don't normally include a belt or anything with it. The shorts are a fantastic fit and although they are called hot pants, they cover everything and aren't too short for day-time wear. I think these are probably too casual to wear on a night on the town, due to the rips and the belt that comes with the shorts so I will stick to wearing these during the day only. I give these shorts 5 out of 5 stars as they are great quality, a lovely fit and also look great.
