I enjoy the clothing stocked in the well known high street store Republic. They are well known for stocking the brand Soulcal, and one of their most famous pieces is their hoody. I personally received two of these as Christmas presents in 2010 so quite a while back now. The style of the hoody updates every year. The ones I own are the same as in the image for this review. The 2011 style had lots of white bold print on them, and the newer style has a bigger logo but is still quite basic like the ones I own.
As these are stocked within Republic, they are quite easy to get your hands on. You can just pop into Republic stores or order these online. I generally find that they always have good levels of stock of these hoodies. The price per hoody is £20 which I think is reasonable. It is not cheap, but it is a fair price for a good quality hoody. They also often have an offer whereby if you buy two of the hoodies it is only £30, making them only £15 a hoody. This is what the person who gifted me these did and this saved them a little money.
Although I can only review the style of hoody I own as shown in the image, the newer and updated versions are very similar. The two colours I own are a baby blue and a hot pink shade. The hoodies are available in pinks, blues, purples, oranges... you get the picture. There is a colour to suit everyone. The hoody is a pullover one with no zip. There is a hood with two drawstring pulls and a large front pocket which can store quite a lot inside. I really like the style of the hoodie even though it is relatively basic.
It all seemed to be going well until I tried these on. I am a size 8/10 - in fact I'm somewhere right between the two and half of my clothes are the one size, half the other. I received one of these in an 8 and one in a 10. I think this was done by accident by the buyer, but I was happy to try them out as generally I fit into both well. The size 8 seemed a little tight around the neck, but I just thought this was because it could be a little small. When trying on the size 10, the hoodie itself was comfortable and a little loose, but again the neck was very tight and uncomfortable. Many times trying to take off this hoody, I would get my head stuck and it was really causing quite a panic. At this point may I add that I have quite a small head/neck area. After mentioning this to a male friend, they also commented that they had noticed it with the mens versions of these hoodies. I suppose Soulcal could have designed this to keep air from going down the hoodie, but it is just far too tight and constrained for my liking. Due to this, I no longer wear them out of the house as I feel too restricted.
Other than this problem, when worn the hoody looks really nice. It washes well and after two years of use, both my hoodies are still in a great condition. The inside is lovely and warm, much better than other hoodies I've tried. The large pocket on the front comes in extremely handy as it is big enough to hold phones, purses and other little bits. I have found this useful if I'm popping out quickly. It is also quite tight, so prevents things from falling out either side.
Overall, I do like the Soulcal hoodies, and I'm glad I do own some. Unfortunately, due to the tightness around the neck area, I find myself not wearing these lovely hoodies so much. I really recommend you try them on yourself if you are interested in buying them, because I have never really experienced this with any other brand of hoodie. Apart from this issue, a lovely and warm hoodie. Thanks for reading and hope it helps.
Republic is high street store that stocks fashionable clothing similar to TopShop and River Island. Around 6 months ago a Republic store opened on my local high street and it soom became one of my favourite stores. Aside from stocking fashionable items they also stock sporty-type items with the brand they sell being 'soul cal'. I don't own any other Soul Cal products neither am I a sucker for brands but I can't resist a good, comfy hoodie so I bought one and haven't looked back!
I bought the hoodie in a size 8 and found that the arms and body part was quite baggy which I didn't mind as I quite like this look but just bear that in mind if you wish to purchase a hoodie. My hoodie was dark green with the soul cal logo and writing printed on the top right it also says california down the sleeve. The style wouldn't usually be my type of thing as I am quite girly but like I said im a sucker for comfort!
The hoodie also has a big pocket at the front which can surprisinly fit a lot of things in it. It has two white toggles at the front of the hood if the toggles are pulled whilst the hood is over your head it will act as a wind breaker or protect your hair from the rain which can be quite handy if you don't mind looking slightly weird until the wind/rain wears off.
Inside the material is really fleecy which makes for really good insulation. It is very soft to touch both inside and out. The design i'd say was quite plain meaning that it would go with anything such as thrown on with a pair of jeans or leggings or paired with jogging bottoms. On the hem of the bottom of the jumper and the cuffs of the jumper there is added elastic which also acts as a windbreaker and adds to the warmth of the jumper.
Washing this jumper has been no problem whatsoever, the colour and style is still as good as new. As for ironing the jumper it is worthwhile turning it inside out to prevent the heat removing the PVC transfers.
This jumper was £24.99 which is very reasonable especially considering that it is branded and extremely comfortable and warm so i'd definitely recommend this jumper.
I got two of these for Christmas. I had wanted some for sometime so when we saw they were on sale for buy one get one free in Republic (I think they are still on this offer) my Mum picked me up a pink one and a yellow one. They retail at £24.99 each but worked out at only £12.50 each which I think was a bargain! I have only ever seen these in Republic but I am not sure if you can buy them elsewhere.
These hoodies come in a variety of colours and are available for both males and females. Colours I have seen include pink, yellow, orange, blue and green. All of the colours are very bright and vibrant and I will probably buy myself a few different colours when I have some more money.
I got mine in a size 10 and I am usually a size 10-12 but these fit really well. One thing I have noticed is that the yellow one seems to be a bit smaller than the pink one! Don't know why this is but they both fit ok so its not too much of an issue.
The hoodies look really nice on, they are quite simple and plain but because of the bright colours they stand out well in a crowd. I really like the shades, the pink one is quite bright as you can see above and the yellow is a bright lemon. There is grey detailing on both of them, with the strings and also the Soul Cal branding on the pocket. The hoods are also grey inside with a velvety grey trim.
The hoodies are really comfortable to wear. Since I received these at Christmas I have worn one of these pretty much every day! They are really soft and I find them easy to move about in. They are also very warm and snug which is brilliant in this cold weather. I have washed both of them twice now and they both still look as bright as when I got them and neither of them have lost their shape.
I think these are great hoodies, I am certainly going to buy a couple more when I have some more cash as they are really comfortable, stylish and lovely and cosy! Recommended.
