Advantages: streamlines without the pain

Spanx were invented by Sara Blakely - a very pretty girl who does not look like she is in need of Spanx herself - but maybe that's because she has them on under her clothes in the photo!

She was sick of visible panty lines and lumps and bumps under otherwise flattering clothes, so she literally invented a solution. Spanx have been such a success that she won Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 and Georgia's woman of the year 2005.

Spanx have been featured in many magazines over the years, and are Celebrity endorsed. They have apparently been worn by (if not seen on) Oprah, Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce, Jessica Alba, Quen Latifa, Madonna, Katie Holmes, Girls Aloud (are you kidding) - the list goes on. So now you know that under those slinky looking dresses, all the celebrities are wearing suction underwear. Life is good.

Spanx are so popular, that they now have a variety of products for your needs, be it body shapers, tights, camis, and even what they call 'bod-a-bing' skirts, tanks and pants (trousers to your and me in the UK).

Standard colours are bare/nude, black and cocoa, and the size range is xs, s, m, l, xl, 1x, 2x, 3x. The thing I love on the website is that they show the before and after of the model wearing the product, and you really can see how it smoothes out all the lumpy bits to give the illusion of a streamlined body.

The Power Panties are surprisingly comfortable to wear once you get them on, and don't ride up or down. The soft hosiery fabric slims the tummy, thighs, hips and rear. They illiminate visible panty lines, have a cotton gusset for comfort, and are perfect to wear every day under skirts and dresses.

My problem areas are tummy and thighs, and they really suck everything in and flatten you out. I thought my rear looked ok without them on in a dress recently, but when you put these on you wonder what you were thinking.

I would definately invest in one of their body shapers if I was wearing a particularly fitted slinky dress. You can buy the Power Panties in department stores or online for under £25.
