Advantages: i love my dress
Disadvantages: for some it can be stressful
St Patricks Day 2006 was a special night for me. I went out with my boyfriend and returned with my fiancé. The proposal wasn't the most romantic...but was probably the funniest.
He tripped over the kerb after a few pints of Guinness. We had just got a takeaway and was walking home. I looked down at him with his onion rings and asked if he was hurt...he replied "well while I'm here I may as well...." So he looked up at me with an onion ring in his hand and said "will you marry me" I was stunned and then he put the onion ring on my finger.
A few months later he bought a real ring and asked me properly. He really is a sweetie and when I knew about the wedding I started looking for my dress.
I knew what style I wanted instantly and would wander past a shop and fall in love with the dresses in the window. I wasn't too impressed with the prices however and soon started to wish I had a huge budget. Recently we decided to set a date for the wedding so I was now desperate to get the dress, I mean the wedding didn't seem real until I had it.
I searched local shops but they slowly started to close, I was not impressed that I may have to get my special dress online or that I'd have to travel far to get one. I was sat in my garden one day when a car drove past. I live in a small town and to see a local company was amazing.
I looked at the website for the first time a few weeks ago and fell in love with a dress. It was described as 'flattering' and this was perfect. If this wasn't good enough the dress was on sale from £795 to £175 oh and the lady would bring the dress to my home to try on.
I would however suggest that if you plan on getting a wedding dress its best to try a few on before deciding the final one. You tastes change so much and one dress online could look stunning but on look like a tent. I decided to meet her at her workplace and try on a selection of dresses. I took my mum for support and we both realised that the dress I had adored was nice but not 'the one' so I tried on a few more...soon I spotted it. The dress I had dreamed of. It was an A line dress with a huge train. The top of the bodice was covered in diamante crystals, silver beads and iridescent sequins. It was a dream come true and it was only £299 (yes men that's a great price)
I felt a tear come to my eye and my mum looked emotional it was then I knew it was 'the one'. The lady added a veil and a pretend bouquet so I could get a real feel for it. I was ready to take it off when she asked what petticoat I was thinking of wearing. I had no idea so I tried on a few to see the different ways the dress could look and I loved it, the skirt seemed to puff right out and gave a perfect shape.
We then had to discuss a deposit. I was very fortunate that the first shop I visted to actually try on dresses was perfect. I was amzed at the detail on the bodice and the overall price I had to secure my purchase. The deposit was £50 and I could pay in monthly instalments for 6 months which meant that I could afford the dress and would not have to save rigidly for months only to find that I had no will power and spent the money.
It really was extras like these that made my dress shopping so amazing. The lady I saw was so helpful and I knew as soon as I walked in that I could trust her judgement.
I have found that certain shapes obviously flatter certain people. An A line dress which is fitted on top but emerges at the waist and puffs out (almost like an 'A') is very flattering for the fuller figure but the fishtail skirt (tight down to the knees then it flicks out) is more flattering on a skinny figure. Bridal boutiques and bridal department will know about what looks good and what doe not so if you are slightly stuck for choice they will be sure to help.
It's not just the shape you need to worry about these days. People chose to get married in a wealth of colours and whilst white or ivory is the most popular colours such as red, burgundy, gold, cream, pink, black and purple are becoming more popular. The colour will also make a difference to the way you look some colours can make you look really skinny or really fat so its always best to check out a variety of colours to see what suits you. I always said I would avoid white because it would make me look too 'red' but it looked amazing and I am sure will look as good on the day. Its probably obvious to some but hair colour will also play a big part in choosing the dress.
Friends of mine have got married and all have described the torture of choosing the dress. I have found it a very enjoyable experience and am now the owner of a perfect wedding dress.
Summary: I have found my perfect dress for my special day!

collingwood21 - 03/02/08 I am dreading looking for wedding dress, to be honest. I am not at all girly and pretty clueless when it comes to clothes. I worry I'll end up with something I don't really like just because it is the only thing that fits... :-( |
