Advantages: makes you feel special on you extra special day

Disadvantages: none

After being with my fiancé for 2 years I was really shocked and stunned when he finally popped the question. He even did it the correct way, if there's such a thing! He asked my Dad first then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. After bursting out uncontrollably in tears I finally said yes, but its only now 5 years later that we have set a date.

25th of July 2009 is the big day, and I have been putting my plans into motion now for a while.

As most of you ladies will agree, looking for your wedding dress has to be the most stressful part of the whole experience. You want to look just right for the big day and also look so good that you knock the socks of your future husband to be. You need to have a dress that is going to flatter all your attributes and disguise the not so good looking parts.

I began looking for my dress very early, basically the week after we set the date, which was over a year away at that time. But I am so glad that I did. I had a few bad experiences with some companies. One of these that will always stick in my mind was when I went into our local Wilkies on the high street. I went in with one of my bridesmaids and her daughter who is the flower girl, just browsing and looking for prices, the assistant replied with a very shocking and upsetting comment that I really wasn't prepared for. She looked down her nose at me and told me ' for the likes of you, you would be better going somewhere like BHS or Marks and Spencer's, our dresses are too high priced for you !'. Upon this is was mortified and all I could do was walk out feeling ashamed and that I wasn't good enough to even be there. My bridesmaid stood there gob smacked and I vowed that I would never go back in there. My mother got wind of this and decided to go back into the store with me to see how they reacted this time, and believe it or not, they were all for helping us that day, but we told them that after the last time we would never buy anything from them, as their stock wasn't up to the high quality that we were after, and that turned the tables, it was then them that were gob smacked.

We then decided to have a look in some other shops that would be happy for our business, and found a great little shop called 'special days brides' in Kirkcaldy, that offered really high quality bridesmaids and bridal dresses at discounted prices. They spent a lot of time with me helping me to select the perfect dress and I was to place my order nearer the time, as they knew that different styles were due in and wanted to make sure that I didn't change my mind.

On the recommendation of a friend who recently got married I decided to have a look on Ebay. There is a lot of shops on there that hand make your ideal dress for a very small price. I was a bit apprehensive at ordering one, as I wasn't sure that the quality would be as high a standard as on the high street. After only 30 minutes of looking I found the dress of my dreams, and at a total of £90 for the dress and delivery I decided to go for it, at that price if it wasn't any good then it didn't really matter. But, when it came I wasn't disappointed, what a dress.

There isn't just one dress stress though, you also have to worry about how your bridesmaids are going to look. At the end of the day you don't want them to upstage you! Again I didn't have a problem with these as I managed to get them from the same site as my wedding dress, and they came to £90 for the two dresses.

I have actually been quite lucky in finding and picking my dream dress, I have not had all the stress that a lot of brides have had, and I'm glad. I don't think that I could put up with anymore stress than this wedding has caused. My photographer has cancelled on me, my handmade invites did not turn out how I wanted them and are going to have to be re-made, but hey that's another story.

As the woman in Wilkies said I was better going else where, and when I did I got the best bargain and the best dress that money could buy. Thanks Wilkies, you may have lost a customer but you made someone very happy.

Good luck to all the brides out there that have this all coming to them, my advice, just take your time and do things at your own pace, the sooner you start looking the more time you have to find that perfect dress and the less stress you will have.

I hope this has helped some budding brides and lets them know that you are not alone out there we are all stressed out.

ooh some Bridal shops can be so snotty. The worst for me was Berketex which had four assistants standing there doing nothing and told me to make an appointment the following week to try dresses on. I didn't bother! Good luck with the planning!
