Advantages: Superb fit, flexible waistband.
Disadvantages: Not finding a shop that stocks this model.
I went fifty years of my life before I ever donned a pair of jeans. What I found was that I was born 'Average', and believe me, it hurts when you hunt for more than 25 years for jeans that fit an average person. If you have great child bearing hips, if you have huge thighs, or if you have the skinniest of waists or the longest of legs, it seems Jean manufacturers can't wait to sell you their stock of oddly shaped jeans, whilst neglecting folk like me, who are at best 'average'. I gave up. I had tried all makes, even tried the ones in Marks and Spencers, and I either ended up trying to squeeze myself into what they called stretch, or finding that there was so much material in the jeans that I looked like I had lost my horse, or had a saggy bum. I really was not happy with the reflection that looked back at me in the mirror in changing rooms, and gave up for many years the search for that illusive pair of jeans.
It was completely by accident that I even thought of the concept of trying on jeans, when a local shop displayed their new range in the window, and they looked great. I decided to let myself have one more try and the jeans in question were Wranglers. We had a bit of bother finding the right size though when we did, I couldn't believe it. They fit so well and seemed to restore my faith in jeans manufacturers, so much so that I bought three pairs at around 40 Pounds a pair, and yet another two pairs in the sales at 27 Pounds.
Whilst Wranglers appear to be catering for Miss Average, other manufacturers still churn out weird shapes, and recently, as comparisons, I have tried Levi, knowing them to have a good reputation, and guess what ? Levi cater for bigger bums and thighs, but not for miss average. The waistband on the Levis hurt me from the initial try on, and although they had flares like the Wranglers that have become part of my every day life, the Wranglers were comfortable on the waste though tight enough to be flattering. Levis got it wrong.
My Wranglers wash well, they dry well, and they don't mind the odd hot wash when stained, and what I was impressed with is the quality of the material, and the amount of abuse it takes, its stain resistance, and the way in which the colour stays true to the original purchase. I bought darker coloured ones since I find these the most flattering, and a pair of the stone washed ones, and was concerned that the already faded ones would fade more. Since they were already the colour I liked, I didn't want this to happen, and regardless of almost four years of washing regularly, they are still the same colour I began with.
Compared with other makes worn by my husband, the Wranglers seem to go on for ever. They don't lose their shape, and still hug me firmly but comfortably. What irked me was that my local stockist decided to change styles, though what I would suggest to any Miss Average size out there is to look around because they are still available in shops and online. The only real reason I looked for more was that I wanted a choice of colours and having searched for nigh on 30 years for a pair of jeans that fit me was afraid that the manufacturer may stop making them, and wanted to buy more for the future.
The stitching is good quality. The zipper has never failed, and the pockets are every bit as intact as when I bought them, and one thing that impresses me is that the bottoms of the jeans do not fray as easily as my husbands jeans, even though we both wear our jeans a similar length. Mine get stained during wet weather wear, but when washed are intact, whilst his are frayed at the bottoms.
There are many styles available in Wranglers, though the flared stretch jeans are my favourite, and favoured over the cut of Levi, and many other makes, because I don't need to alter them. I figure if I am going to pay a fortune for clothes, then I shouldn't have to alter them. It goes against the grain to wear altered clothing when you spend so much. These have a choice of leg lengths and waist sizes and one particular size is perfect for me without alteration. Even the Levi jeans would have had to be taken up, and I am not going there. At these kind of prices, I expect my clothes to fit me.
Recommendation.
Stretch jeans are like a second skin. They are comfortable only if they fit your body. If you have had difficulty finding that pair of jeans that fit, don't give up. Different cuts and styles are out there, and I am very content with my Wranglers, and will take a lot of convincing by other makers before I even think of changing my choice of jeans, given that these have pleased me so well. I wasn't prepared to have sagging knees, extra cloth around my thighs or jeans that simply didn't fit, and Wranglers have altered my perception of jeans, making it a possibility for me to be comfortable and very assured of quality of workmanship and lastability.
Someone remembered there are those of us that are 'average', and that was Wrangler. I believe it's a step in the right direction and have noted that Levi have tried to follow this trend, though haven't quite made it yet. For the time being, Wrangler get my business, but by goodness they have had to work years to get it right, and really have managed it.
Available in sizes 0 to 22
Different Leg Lengths to suit your requirements.
Catering for all waists whether regular, shorter or longer. (and this is where Wranglers really got something right).
A superb buy.Well done to Wranglers for restoring my faith and making this 'Miss Average' feel catered for.
Rachel
Summary: A search that was successful.
