Zebra Welly Sox
Advantages: Nice choice of designs, cheap at original price, really stay up
Disadvantages: Tight, loose threads that pull easily
This Halloween I decided to go as a zebra. I already had the dress. I also had the bikini (bottoms to be worn over tights, superman style - this was a cheer social, so cartwheels and headstands were going to come as standard). A quick spin around Claire's and I had clip in ears and face paints. All that was missing was a pair of socks. I opted for knee highs rather than tights because I thought they'd be more flattering, and because that meant there was a bit of a gap between my various Zebra prints, useful in case one interpretation of Zebra wasn't quite identical to the other. Looking online, I found these for £2.90 on Amazon, so added to basket. (The price, including delivery, has now risen to £4.99).
These aren't marketed as fancy dress (though they could be!) They are sold as welly sox and designed to stay up under wellingtons which means they have to be reasonably tight, so they don't fall down round your ankles. I was a little scared when I first tried them on that they might cut off circulation to my legs because they do dig in somewhat just below the knee. On Halloween they were fine because they were over tights, but when I've worn them since I've always ended up with those corrugated too-tight marks at the top of my calves. The good side is that they really do stay up. On me they come up to my knees and I think they would stretch higher on those with longer and thinner (or *cough* less muscular) calves.
The socks are really thick, and are noticeably warmer than my normal foot coverings, both on the foot and on the leg. They are supposed to go under boots but even wearing them with heels on a crisp October night in Manchester, they kept me toasty.
For the price and purpose I would rate these socks, but there are a few negatives. The quality isn't great, and they are not washing especially well, going bobbly in places already, after only about 4 or 5 wearings. The insides are also unfinished, so lots of loose threads to snag and pull. I really don't expect them to last to next Halloween at this rate. Finally, while the zebra print design is clear, I don't quite understand why the toe, heel and elasticated tops are purple. Black or white would have been fine, but purple just seems a little odd, because even if they aren't sold to be part of a costume, I think it's reasonable to assume some people might purchase them for that reason. I was a zebra with inexplicable purple knee stripes. Luckily it was dark, and most people were too drunk to notice anyway...
I don't wear a lot of animal print (leopard Victoria's Secret goodies aside), but these come in a wide range - you can also get them in cheetah , cow, and lingerie-matching leopard. I know a fiver is not a lot but given the negatives I've discovered I'd recommend you wait until they come back down in price, because for just a few quid I'd be much more likely to buy another pair.
Summary: Nice to look at and warm to wear, but they don't wash well
