      A really smart purchase

I have had a number of problems with printers over the years, either they are too slow or they have trouble only feeding one piece of paper through at a time, or they cannot cope with double-sided printing but this all-in-one Hewlett Packard printer has been ideal. The printer is quite bulky in size, but nice looking and considering it is a printer, scanner, photocopier and fax machine, it is an excellent compact size!

I am a postgraduate student and so do a lot of printing and this printer has not faltered at any hurdle yet. The installation process is extremely easy - the printer comes with a CD which guides you through the process. I have recently bought a new computer (with Windows 7) and when I popped the CD in to install my printer, it said it could not install on this operating system. However, it is extremely simple to do so as the Hewlett Packard website contains all the necessay downloads to get the printer up and running and it was really simple and quick.

The prints are great quality and relatively fast - about 30 pages per minute (black and white) and 23 pages per minute colour. There is always the option to print on draft or fast draft etc if you want to use less ink/print quickly without the top quality prints. I have also used it to print many photographs and the I am always impressed by the quality. Also the installation programmes have wonderful options in order to customise your photographic printing.

Double-sided printing is a great feauture to save paper. You do have to go to the printer to re-input the paper (following the onscreen instructions) so it is not automatic but not too much effort to go to.

The scanner and photocopy functions are perfect, simple to use and work really well. Although I have never attempted to use it as a fax (as I have a seperate fax machine), this function is available and if anything like the rest will be very simple to use.

Has a graphic display which lets you know what the printer is doing (always useful to know what technology thinks it is doing)! Ink cartridges (as with all HP printers) are relatively expensive but are really excellent quality and long-lasting. The ones for this printer are also available in XL sizes which are great value!!

The one negative thing I have to say is that if the printer is running low on paper, it will often grab one or more pieces as it is printing leaving your page printed half on one page and half on another - resulting in you having to reprint. BUT if you keep the paper topped up this won't happen!
