Sainsbury's Antiseptic Wipes
by alyson29
I like to keep a well stocked first aid kit and whilst I consider myself to be a bargain hunter and will frequently try and test value brands I will not compromise when it comes to antiseptic products. A brand that I have trusted for many years is Sainsbury's and when shopping for a couple of replacement items a few months ago I spotted ... their antiseptic wipes, which are quite aptly named Ouch! with this review discussing my experience.
It was the appearance of the pale blue cardboard box containing ten wipes that captured my attention due to the large bold capital letters, which spelled out the word Ouch! I feel that Sainsbury's have taken somewhat of a gamble with the product name despite the fact that all brands of wipes will inevitably sting an open wound when applied to the skin. Being the brave person that I am I popped them into my basket and whilst I enjoy the challenge of trying new products, this was one that I hoped that I would never need to use.
Unfortunately, I had the chance of trying them out some weeks later after cutting my finger on a carving knife that was hidden in the bubbly washing up water. I favour using antiseptic wipes as opposed to creams, as they are more hygienic due to being individually wrapped and as a result, they are perfect for keeping in the car and my handbag. The sachet is easily torn open with the wipes being of a good size and offering a sufficient level of moisturise to effectively clean a wound and just as the product name would suggest and due to the alcohol content, they sting although my response was far worse than the word ouch!
Thankfully, the sensation vanishes within a short space of time although of course, this is dependent on the scale of the injury. The wipes offer a fairly powerful aroma although I cannot admit to it being unpleasant. However, this is a small price to pay in order to have the assurance that a wound is thoroughly cleaned and free of dirt and germs.
I like the fact that they contain natural aloe vera, which is known for its antiseptic properties and I must admit that I have never previously seen its inclusion in this type of product. Whilst I do not intend listing the entire list of active ingredients, I was pleased to learn of their glycerine content, which gave me the assurance that they wouldn't be too drying on the skin, which is often the case with some brands. I felt assured that the wipe was effectively ridding the wound of any germs and bacteria and therefore preventing the risk of infection. Whilst my skin was slightly wet after using it dried fairly quickly to enable me to cover the wound with a dressing.
I cannot speak of any adverse effects when using such as skin irritation other than the initial stinging and this is a first aid item that I will definitely be repurchasing, particularly as they cost only 70p for a pack of ten as opposed to the leading brand, which retails at £1.99 for the same size pack. I can highly recommend Sainsbury's Ouch! Antiseptic Wipes, which receive five stars from me.

Tesco Everyday Value Dressing Strip
by xxfoxyredxx
Just recently I had a really horrible, nasty accident. I won't go into too much details about it at this time of the morning but I was using a very sharp knife and I went through one side of my finger right through to the other. I ended up passing out, bleeding all over the place in agony and eventually I had to go to the hospital to ... have stitches and I was very lucky to have not chopped my finger off!
This accident made me realise that in my medicine cabinet I should have a few essentials. I'm not accident prone so I've never really had a bandage or some plasters in however I was lucky cos lurking in the back of my medicine cabinet there were a few bits and pieces to help me and my injury get by but nothing major so I knew that it was time to replace my lovely toiletries sat in my cabinet with more sensible things!
So off I popped to Tesco with my Stepdad in tow, him pleased that I was getting a proper first aid kit together tries to boss me about into what I need. Me, I wanted a basic and cheap little kit not a second mortgage thanks to Elastoplast prices thank you very much! Eventually I opted for these Tesco Value plasters and they only cost me 28p (much to Stepdads disgust and rambling that they'd be totally rubbish and weren't worth buying lol!).
The Packaging:
These come in a white coloured box and on the front of it in aqua green and dark green writing we are clearly told that they are Tesco Everyday Value 10 Fabric Adhesive Dressing Strips and that they measure 10cm x 6cm and there are little pictures shown of scissors, medical bottles and the likes then on the back of the box other information listed includes contact details for the manufacturer. Cheap looking but informative enough packaging this is to be fair to it.
The Plasters:
What you get is ten large beigy/brown coloured pieces of plaster, backed onto shiny paper. You need to cut as much as you want to off to use it and that just takes a decent pair of scissors and the backing peels off the plaster easily and you pop it to where you want to cover and/or protect.
These are not waterproof plasters, splash-proof enough...yes I guess they are. They stick down rather well, are a little cushioned on the inside of them and padded with a little cotton wool which means if you have a wound this area gets a little protected and the plaster can mop up a bit of liquid of any kind, in my case once it was healing it was puss.
They are simply enough to remove and don't leave a sticky mess behind themselves and all in all I can highly recommend these. Not only have I used them for protecting my finger injury, I've also now used them to help stop my shoes rubbing, popped a blister and popped one of these over it and all in all I think they offer great value for my pennies.
If you have an immediate need for these though the cutting up of them can become a pain so what I've done is cut a few pieces into strips of different sizes as well as leaving a few sheets whole so that little issue has been taken care of!
Only available from Tesco stores.
