Savlon Advanced Healing Gel
Advantages: Did seem to have some effect
Disadvantages: Pricey, results were questionable, have to use quickly
Recently my other half had a small accident and ended up with large cuts/scratches on his forearms. I purchased this in the hope that they would heal more quickly and not scar.
The product is immediately identifiable as belonging to the Savlon range, as it comes in the distinctive blue coloured tube with white lettering. However the words "Advanced Healing' are quite prominent, which makes this product easily distinguishable.
It seems a bit silly to admit this now but when I first squeezed the product out, I was surprised to see that it was a gel and not a cream. Obviously there is a rather large clue in the product name, but I hadn't really registered that and was expecting it to look like regular Savlon. Don't I feel silly. The product is translucent white when first applied but as soon as you have spread it over the skin it loses its white colour and leaves just a slightly 'wet' look, which disappears almost instantly. Within 30 seconds of application you can't feel where you have applied the gel at all. The product scent does remain for quite a while afterwards, I would say for around half an hour after application. It isn't a strong smell, nor an unpleasant one, but you are aware of it. If you have used regular Savlon before, the smell is more or less identical. If not, the best way I can describe it is as being a bit like talcum powder with a touch of something 'medicated' thrown in.
In terms of whether this product works, it didn't produce miracle results but I do think it speeded up the healing process a little. Of course, there is no way of telling how quickly the wounds would have healed on their own, but I do think they cleared up somewhat more quickly than I expected. They did leave slight scarring so again, no miracle, but would this have been worse without the gel? Perhaps. On reading the website, the scarring prevention is most effective if the gel is applied before a scab can form so this is probably why we didn't have great results in this area. Luckily there haven't been any subsequent injuries to test it on!
Overall, I would say this product did have some effect but the results didn't 'wow' me. I might buy it again if I had visible marks I wanted rid of, if I'd managed to fall into a thorn bush a week before my wedding or something, but under those circumstances I'd be buying it out of desperation and because I had nothing to lose. Its actual impact will always be difficult to judge but don't buy this expecting a miracle of healing, because you will be disappointed.
I have found this gel online for around £3.50 for 50g so it is around 50% more expensive than regular Savlon. In order to use it before a scab forms you would have to keep a tube on standby, so if you spot this on promotion it might be worth picking up a tube for the medicine cabinet, but I'm not sure I'm convinced enough of its effect to buy it again.
Summary: Not one for me.
