Savlon Antiseptic Cream
Advantages: soothing; works with the skins natural healingprocess
Disadvantages: can cause allergic reactions in some.
Savlon is a well-known antiseptic cream that can probably be found in most households, especially those that contain children who, as most parents will have experienced, often manage to cover themselves in bruises, cuts, grazes or inexplicably come out with spots or rashes in all sorts of places!
I keep a ready supply of Savlon because, in my opinion, it is a gentle product that helps to cleanse a wound as well as helping to prevent infection and it works with the natural healing process of your own skin, thus enabling as quick a healing time as possible.
If you have read some of my other reviews so you will note that I have problem skin every now and again and have tried several products to help reduce or get rid of spots and/or redness. Just lately, finding that those products work initially but then seem to have a gradually lessening effect, I have turned to my trusty savlon to see if it helps and thankfully it has helped diminish a few little persistent spots I had around my nose area that were very red and seemingly untouchable when using the other spot specific gels. In fact, I used this last night and the said spots are already noticeably less red and have reduced a little in size.
What I particularly like is that this cream is not too aggressive and does not dry out the skin as many other products do but merely gently cleanses, protects and heals. It does have a faint smell which I can't really describe other than to say it is mild and not unpleasant and not overly medicinal. It feels very soothing on the skin and if rubbed in completely does not leave any residue and make-up can be applied over the top if using in the morning.
The product comes in a blue, soft plastic tube with a white screw on lid. The cream is very white and thick and should be applied to the affected area (with clean hands obviously) using a small circular motion until the product has been absorbed into the skin. Only a small amount of product needs to be used and it does take a little while to sink in. Of a night I leave some product on the surface of the skin after some has sunk in, in the hope that this will continue sinking in overnight which it does as it is not there in the morning - (my husband knows to leave me alone if he comes to bed and I have savlon smeared all over my face so if you want a different excuse than a headache.....)!
Savlon can be bought in supermarkets and chemists. A 30g tube costs £1.99 but you can buy larger tubes (100g for £4.19). Cetrimide 0.5% w/w and Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.1% w/w are listed as the active ingredients. It should be noted that this product contains Cetostearyl alcohol which can in some people cause local skin reactions and it also contains Parahydroxybenzoates which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). Should these or any other unwanted side effects occur, you should stop using it and consult your doctor. Luckily, I have never had any adverse reactions to using this and neither have my children who find this very soothing when applied as the cream feels very soft and cool on the skin.
I really do rate Savlon as it is so gentle and soothing and great for the whole family in time of tears or discomfort!
Thanks for reading. x
