A realistic looking bamboo aquarium ornament

When setting up my aquarium, I wanted to get some plants to add to it for decoration and to provide a more interesting environment for my fish. I have no experience of growing aquatic plants and I didn't want the hassle of having to fertilise the water and have to perform water quality checks so I decided it was simpler to get some ornamental plants instead. One of the ones I chose was this bamboo ornament.

This particular ornament caught my eye as it is green and much more realistic looking that many of the brightly coloured fake aquarium plants that are available. It looks like bamboo with sprouting green leaves on a rocky base and is great if you are after an Aztec theme for your fish tank or just want something that looks a bit different from the usual prickly looking plastic plants. I loved the fact that it is painted and textured to look like there is algae and moss growing on it as it makes it look quite realistic. This was great for my tank, as when it was brand new I added this and it immediately made it look like a more established tank.

The approximate dimensions of this ornament are 14.5cm x 8cm x 6.5cm so it is well suited for small aquariums. The base of the ornament is roughly triangular which means it fits nicely in the corner of the tank. I always leave a little gap behind it so my gold fish can still swim in between the bamboo and the glass of the tank if they want to. They seem to quite like doing this and sometimes they shelter down there too. In terms of interaction, my fish don't really peck at it very much and generally swim around the ornament or shelter next to it. This is probably because it is not that leafy so not much food gets trapped in it. This is good from the cleaning point of view.

Most of the ornament is made of polyresin and the little leaves which are plastic are glued into small holes on the bamboo part. One of the leaves fell out of mine when I was cleaning it but it may be that I was a bit rough with it and caused this to happen.

When I originally wrote this review a few weeks ago, I said that I was not too concerned about this leaf dropping off as it was just one and I probably caused it by rough handling. Unfortunately since then about 5 or 6 leaves have fallen off of their own accord over the course of a week or so. There are not that many on there to begin with which means I now have a rather silly looking stick-like ornament in my tank. I have only owned this ornament for less than three months so for it to fall apart is very poor indeed.

This bamboo ornament is available from Pets At Home in store and on the website for £5 and is currently part of a 3 for the price of 2 offer however after what has happened to mine I would definitely not recommend it. It is a waste of money. Choose an ornament which is either completely resin or completely plastic and not one which has parts glued on to it. I am demoting this ornament from its original 5 stars to a disappointing but deserved one star.
