“ Brand: Pets at Home / Type: Fish Tank / Aquarium Ornaments „
Almost 18 months ago my husband and I got interested in fish tanks and keeping tropical fish. We initially started with a Biorb fish tank which was quite small in size and because of this we were limited in what ornaments we could have. One ornament that we purchased not long after we got our tank was this pineapple. Now initially it might just look like an odd ornament but this pineapple is actually the home to Spongebob Squarepants and that was the reason for this purchase. It started with a legless Spongebob that we found stuck in a toy grabber machine at the fair and we have loved Spongebob Squarepants ever since.
This ornament is currently £8.00 at Pets At Home, as I think it was when we purchased ours, and we got ours as part of a 3 for 2 deal on ornaments, like basically every ornament we have ever bought there!
The ornament itself is really detailed and looks great in the tank. This pineapple has a top, five windows and a doorway also plus a little bit that comes out of the side, a looking glass type thing I believe but the name of this escapes me! I love the orange of this ornament which is a little like a burnt orange colour. The windows are all lined with blue and have white spots. The blue is a lovely colour and again is quite vivid. The size of the windows are functional and my smaller fish (tetras, mollys and a few others) can fit through the windows and comfortably swim around in the pineapple and come back out of the other windows with ease. The door is an even larger size making this ornament accessible to my young corydoras' and some of my cichlids.
One bad comment I would have to make about this is that this is likely aimed towards the childrens end of the market and I can't imagine a goldfish, traditionally the fish of choice for first time child fish keepers, to be able to comfortably use this ornament. That could lead to a goldfish getting stuck in one of the windows and injuring itself or worse, not something you want a young child to have to witness or see the aftermath of.
This ornament is made from polyresin and mine was submerged in my tank on and off for around 8 months total submerged time. This was used in two different tanks during this time and the colours survived surprisingly well. This ornament is light weight which is useful too of course but not so light weight that large fish can knock it over.
Our fish absolutely loved this ornament for the time that we used it. There were lots of different fish that were able to use this, which is always good, and it gave the smaller fish a nice place to relax with its light interior if they were perhaps getting chased by some of our territorial fish just after mealtimes. Lots of our fish enjoyed this but when it came time for some larger ornaments, to accomodate larger fish, there just wasn't enough room to have lots of little themed ornaments any more. Some of my ornaments were sold, as this was one, and some of them have been kept for when I get my second tank in the near future.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the time that we spent using this pineapple ornament. I had a few other Spongebob Squarepants related ornaments which I always used together, in various areas of the tank, and even though I have recently sold this ornament, for £5 which I thought was great, and this is just because we have much larger ornaments for our tank now and these started to look out of place and were just not getting used any more. When I sold this on it looked almost as good as it did when new, after a quick rinse, and while some green had built up on it over time I was able to bring this back to good condition using boiling hot water and a little gentle rubbing with a sponge. I am rating this ornament 4/5 stars. The price is a little high, but the resell value for me more than made up for that, it is just that this ornament could do with being dark inside to give the fish somewhere to sleep if they want to or just relax while hiding in the dark, as fish seem to love doing.
My mum treated my daughter to a Spongebob Squarepants fish tank and a couple of gold fish. She is a huge Spongebob Squarepants fan so this fish tank was an instant hit for my daughter. The fish tank came complete with some Spongebob accessories we've added to it since then but one of the original ornaments that came inside the tank was this Spongebob house.
Spongebob Squarepants house can be purchased from Pets at home on its own for around the £10 mark. Ours actually came with the fish tank so we didn't have to buy it. It comes with a tiny tag with the Spongebob branding and bar code on it and that's as far as the packaging goes.
The house looks exactly the same as the one from the Spongebob television program as it is in the shape of a pineapple. There are a number of windows and a door that are hollow so that fish can swim through into the house if they wish. We have common cold water goldfish and they have never been inclined to swim through the windows, I think they are a little on the small side. However, the two fish we do have swim through the door without any problems. The size of the house is just under 8cm high and wide and has a diameter of 14cm. It fits nicely into the Spongebob tank we have without looking too small or too big for the tank.
The weight of the ornament is just right, where it initially feels quite heavy, it means that it stays in the water of the tank well. We initially only had a small covering of gravel in the bottom of the tank and it stayed in there with no problems now we have a little more gravel and it still hasn't moved an inch. The ornament is quite bumpy and the spikes of the pineapple do make it quite difficult to clean thoroughly. I put it in a bowl of cold water and scrub it with a scrubbing brush but it is quite hard getting into all of the little nooks and crannies.
I'd definitely recommend this Spongebob Sqaurepants house ornament for a childs fish tank. It transforms the tank into looking like Bikini Bottom from the television show! It has a nice size and sits in the tank well. The only problem is the windows are a little small for fish to swim through and it can be difficult to clean.
~*~*~ Pineapple Home Spongebob Aquarium Ornament ~*~*~
~ What is it? ~
This is a pineapple shaped ornament for your fish tank, it looks like Spongebob Square Pants home from the show of the same name. It is made from durable polyresin, is nice and colourful and lightweight. It has no bottom and just needs to be pushed into the gravel in the bottom of the tank.
~ Why did I buy it? ~
I didn't actually buy it, my dad did after my grandfather gave me a fish tank he no longer needed after upgrading. The fish tank came with everything we needed to have tropical fish but as we were just starting out I decided it would be better to get goldfish for the time being. My dad came to mine and commented on how sparse the tank looked and that I should get some bits for it, which I said I would do eventually.
That weekend my son went away with my mum and dad to their caravan and on the way home they popped into Pets At Home for reptile food and my son came across the Spongebob items for fish tanks. He had my dad buy him this pineapple and a Gary ornament. My father of course had a good grumble when he got back to mine about the price!
~ The Price ~
The pineapple home ornament will set you back £9.99 from Pets At Home, or alternatively you can buy it online at www.petsathome.com where it will cost the same price but is included in a 3 for 2 online exclusive offer.
~ My Thoughts ~
Initially I thought it was a bit garish as I was going to have stone coloured items for the tank to keep it more neutral looking, however it was too late to complain and the kids thought the pineapple was cool so I run it under the tap to give it a clean and popped it into the tank. It looks like the real deal and my tank resembles Bikini Bottom! I was surprised by how light it felt as it looks heavier than what it is and I was a little worried that it wouldn't stay put, but after pushing it down into the gravel it seemed sturdy enough and there are only two goldfish in the tank not sharks after all!
After initially not being very fussed on it I have to say it has grown on me a bit and I have to say it certainly brightens up the tank.
I would never have paid a tenner for this as I just think it's a bit steep for a plastic ornament, however I don't mind that my dad pay a tenner!
Giggle and Boo seem quite pleased with their pineapple, they happily swim in and out and around it and hasn't caused them any ill effects.
There are a few other bits available in the Spongebob range from Pets At Home so you could really deck your tank out to look like Bikini Bottom and they also sell the Spongebob Aquarium Kit for £30 this comes with everything required.
Thanks for reading :o) x
My 2 year old son loves fish and he also loves the Spongebob Squarepants cartoon. For his birthday we got him a Spongebob Squarepants fish tank from pets at home. We didn't actually buy this ornament, all the character tanks that they have for sale come with a free ornament and this was the one that came with the Spongebob tank. For anyone who doesn't know the pineapple is actually the house where Spongebob lives, so if you use it in the pets at home Spongebob tank be prepared for everyone who looks at your tank to point out that Spongebob's house is inside his house (the background for the tank is Spongebob's living room), but it doesn't matter unless you're really fussy.
I'm definitely glad this ornament came free because it was on the shelf next to the tanks for I believe around £9 , which for a fish tank ornament seems very expensive. I'm not sure how much it is elsewhere, but I have seen it on a discount aquatic supplies website for £6.90, with postage however it came to almost the same price as at pets at home, so I would assume it to be around the same price wherever you buy it. There were other far less expensive Spongebob Squarepants ornaments available, so if you were looking to decorate in this theme but didn't want to pay that much you could buy two or three of the cheaper ones for the same price.
The ornament itself is made from polyresin and is approx. 8 x 8 x 14cm it is quite light and even a slight air bubble in it means it will become unstable about the tank and tip over. It also meant that when my husband tried to place an air stone inside it (something we have done with previous tank ornaments) it didn't work and again it bobbed about. It's pretty durable, we've had it 6 months now and it has been cleaned quite vigorously and knocked about a bit in a metal sink and still looks in great condition. It's quite easy to clean, particularly using a toothbrush to get into the gaps, my husband said apart from the fiddly bits round the leaves the rest of the ornament is a bit like cleaning a cup. The ornament has no rough or sharp edges, something I was worried about when I first saw it because it does look a bit spikey.
Jaws (our goldfish) seems to like it, and if he's not up in the feeding area of the tank he's probably skulking about the pineapple house. He's quite a big goldfish and doesn't seem to use the windows, I don't think he would fit through them, but the doorway seems more than big enough for him.
There isn't much more I can think of to say about this ornament, it's nice, my son loves it, the fish enjoys it, but the price is ridiculous and so for that reason I wouldn't recommend it because you could get something much better quality for less and it seems you are just paying for the novelty of it being Spongebob Squarepants merchandise!
Pets at home, along with many other pet stores sell a variety of sponge bob square pants aquarium ornaments. These are general sold for children's fish tanks, but I took a liking to the pineapple home.
I never bought the ornament myself as I didn't like the price, so I was glad to receive it as a gift on my birthday last year.
I think it was more as a joke than a serious gift, but I used it anyway and for the time it was in my aquarium, the fish seemed to love it.
This ornament can be made in many places. I am fortunate enough to have quite a few aquatic stores and pet stores nearby me, and most of those stores actually sell ornaments like this one.
The price is just about the same everywhere I have seen it which gives me the idea its the manufacture who sell the ornament at a hefty price and not just the stores being money grabbers!
This small ornament is sold at Pets at home currently for £8.99. Rounded up, that's about £9 for one ornament.
It's fine if you have a child with a fish tank wanting just one ornament, but other than that, this ornament is small and to me id say it's worth about £5- almost half its RRP.
The paint work on this ornament however is fantastic. It doesn't look cheaply made and holds a lovely toned colour of orange. I'm not sure whether it is hand painted or not, all that is given is the 'made in china' stamp hardly noticeable on the back.
The ornament has 5 small windows, all lined with blue with white spots. The windows are ideally a good size as just about all livebearers can fit through the gaps.
However considering this ornament is sold as a 'childs fish tank' ornament, the size of the holes probably aren't suitable. Most children have coldwater goldfish as they are seen to be easier to keep.
I personally hate the idea of letting a child keep a goldfish and the perceptions parents have that it doesn't matter if the fish dies, because they can just replace it.
It doesn't take much effort to BUY A BOOK and read about how to properly keep your aquarium so it is safe for your goldfish- Which are generally supposed to live for years, not weeks.
So considering the ornament is probably designed for goldfish, the windows are not big enough to be suitable for a goldfish once is starts growing.
The ornament also has a door which is a good size and my synodontis catfish loved using this entrance to poke their heads out of; probably because they were too big to fit in it completely.
The pineapple home is light weight, yet heavy enough to feel it is of a good quality. It is made from what pets at home call a 'durable' polyresin, however I'm not sure how reliable their advertising is.
The body of the pineapple itself seems pretty durable, but the small protruding designs coming off the ornament aren't. The green spikes on my pineapple are all in tact, but the 'pipe' coming out of the pineapple broke the first day I had it, without even being dropped.
I have also noticed since then that when I see this ornament in the shops, the same fault has happened to many of the ornaments on the shelf.
This pineapple house from the sponge bob square pants range gave my tank a 'childish' look, which isn't surprising. However I liked the colour contrasts between the oranges on the house and the greens of my plants in my aquarium. I kept the house in the tank for a few months, but mainly because my catfish loved it.
I had many other caves and hiding places available at the time, so I'm not sure why the catfish liked this house so much considering it is light yellow on the inside- not exactly the dark hiding cave colour.
I have seen this pineapple set up with the rest of the sponge bob range and it generally looks effective and great for a community tank set up. I wouldn't say these ornaments are just for children as they do look nice in a mature planted tank if you are just keeping community common fish.
The pineapple isn't too large, or too small- meaning it is suitable for most common fish and small goldfish.
H 8 x W 8 x D 14cm.
However I don't think when the manufacture made this ornament that they cared about its suitability for fish, it is generally a display ornament with the advantage that fish like it.
Overall, it's a nice ornament for the right tank and looks good with the rest of the sponge bob range. I really don't think the price is suitable for what it is and you can find many other larger, nicer ornaments which would look a lot more natural and suitable for your aquarium.
