Sydeco Aquaplant Mixed Aquarium Plants
Advantages: Bargain, loads of styles/colours, good bases
I have a few of these little pot plants, and I can't sing their praises enough. I have one of the purple ones (front middle of the pic) and a few of the green 'grass' style ones (behind the purple one in the pic). I bought them from a local aquatics shop for £2 each which is fab compared to the prices of many fake aquarium plants - they can be ludicrously expensive!
They come in a huge choice of styles, are made from plastic and are glued into little terracotta pots. They have had small gravel pressed into the top of the glue to finish them off, as around the base of each plant you can see this. It looks really pretty and hides the glue/silicone. One of mine has came out the pot (I used it for a baby land snail hidey hole!), but this doesn't really matter, as the glue is still in one piece. The only difference is there's no pot! It can still be dug down into gravel etc and used as before. Apart from this there is no damage to them at all even after many a scrubbing with a dish brush!
I bought the purple one for the only non-natural tank I have ever had - it was a male Siamese fighter fish and the tank was in my bedroom (which is decorated purple and cream. For a change I decided to decorate his tank in matching colours, as he himself was a stunning violet colour. When I saw these placed on the counter in the afore mentioned shop (perfect for those impulse checkout buys) I thought I'd get some of that! I grabbed a few natural green ones too as I knew they wouldn't go to waste. My fish (Tommy) was given a stunning purple and cream tank and it looked brilliant, thanks to the addition of this unnaturally bright purple plant! So in that regard they are a best buy if you want modern stylish tanks. The red ones are brighter than the photo shows, so they don't look particularly natural either but again, good for those colour coordinating tanks if that's what you're after.
When in place with the pots buried under gravel they look great. Obviously you're not aiming for the natural look if you get the brightly coloured ones, but the green grass ones are very natural looking. This was a bit surprising to me, as generally speaking the more natural the fake plant, the higher the price tag! Of course these are small, only approximately 5 inches including the pot, so they are best used for foreground decoration or smaller tanks. I find they don't float out of the substrate either, to be left bobbing along at the top of the tank, since they are weighted enough to stay submerged. Brilliant, I hate aquarium decor that refuses to stop floating! Kinda defeats the purpose.
Cleaning them is a breeze, even if they get algae on them. Since they are plastic, they can really take a scrubbing without damage ensuing. They're not flimsy either, and are very much 3D; some cheap plastic plants I've seen have been unfortunately 2D, but not these. Since these are 3D and so sturdy I have also used them in land setups, simply burying the base in whatever substrate I am using, and they work just as well this way too. They don't fall over and are very handy for creating little clumps of bushes and giving the place a natural feel. My tortoises quite like these when they are indoors!
I would definitely recommend these pretty little pots, they are a great price (£2.50 in Pets At Home I think) for a sturdy, easy-clean and decent looking artificial aquarium plant. Not only that, but there's a colour and style to suit any taste!
Summary: Full marks for versatility, stability, looks and fun factor!
