“ Manufacturer: Wilkinson / Type: Fish Food „
I have a very fussy fish he'll only eat an expensive brand of fish flakes so when I tried to trick him Wilko's own fish flakes he knew.
The tub has had a face lift since the above picture it is now white. Retailing at £1.39 for 25g I thought I'd try it as the food I buy now is around £3 for the same amount. 'Wilko Fishy Feast Goldfish Flakes' provides a 'complete and balanced meal for your Goldfish' but only if they can stomach it and unfortunately mine can't. The fish I have at the moment is 11yrs old- the other one was 13 and he wouldn't eat it either, so it was a false economy (maybe the dearer food kept them going!).
The flakes themselves are brightly coloured, and a little too big- I had to sprinkle it between my fingers first, thinking maybe that was the problem but no they still wouldn't eat it. It smells really fishy not nice at all. I would say they needed cleaning out more whilst using this food but that maybe because they left it in there. Perhaps if I had introduced them to this sooner they may not of got used to the dear stuff.
I wouldn't buy this again.
ahhh goldfish the stereotypical 'cheap' pet!
So..wilkinson Goldfish Flakes... just as good as the more expensive fish flakes? I think so.
'Wilko Goldfish flakes provide a complete and balanced food for your goldfish' certainly sounds good to me! But do my fish like it, well I've had no complaints (ok bad joke), but they have been having this food for over a year now and seem happy enough, they eat it so I take it they like it haha.
Like all other fish food, it stinks, nothing new there. Available in 2 sizes, a big 100g tub that costs £2.75, or a 50g tub costing £1.99. Not bad at all!
When I clean the tank I don't get any left over food floating around, probably as a result of not over feeding, but many fish foods can leave a grimey film in the tank, wilko's fish food does not! great stuff!
Not alot more I can say really, just to sum it up, they are just as good as more expensive brands!
As mentioned many moons ago, my children have both got their own fish tanks in their bedrooms, both of which contain two fish each.
As far as my children are concerned these fish are their babies, so whatever they want for them, mummy usually obliges, tough I have to say since tightening our belts somewhat during the last few months, the fish are just going to have to do the same for a while!
I have always brought the better branded products for there up keeping, though I have noticed a dramatic price difference between this products and the shops own brand, which as most of you know are just as good if not better at times!
This being the case I decided to go ahead and buy shop branded food for the little darlings.
The product I will now review is - "Wilkinson's goldfish flakes".
Unlike many of the better branded items, this tub of fish food is huge!
It is a plastic tub with a pull off/ push on lid, this of course was my first bug bear, my 5 year old son always to feed his fish himself (of course they are his babies after all!), but when he finally manages to remove the lid half of the food seems to be scattered over the floor too!
Once removed, you will be faced with a very bright assortment of flaked food, when I say bright, I mean bright and almost so colourful it seems to have been over dyed, with the flakes ranging from bright orange through to greens!
The smell is as you would expect, fishy! This is due to the fish derivatives, I am assuming plankton and shrimp type products, if it is actual fish does that make them cannibals!?
The instructions for feeding are the same universally. Feed as much to the fish, as it would take them to eat in five minutes, this usually equates to a small pinch for my daughters fishes, and a much bigger pinch for my son's, his are no bigger but seem much greedier!
The fish seemed to enjoy the food and I thought nothing else of it, that was until a couple of days later.
I always clean my tanks and treat the water with special liquid to neutralise tap water and help with the rotting faeces and excess food in the tank, this of course stops the fish from becoming ill and keeps the water much cleaner for a longer time, couple this with the filters that we also have ad I don't normally have to clean the tanks more often than once a fortnight, this is much better for the fish as it preserves the natural bacteria's within the tank.
With this fish food that is nigh on impossible. Due to what I assume is the high amount of colourants that goes in the food, it dyes the water very quickly, and you are then left with a sludgy brown mixture with the water line being very visible once the tank has had the water removed, I have never had to scrub the tank like I have after using this food!
Pricewise this 25g tub of food will set you back around £3.99 from Wilkinson's www.wilkinsonplus.com, and though it is slightly better in price than the usual brand I buy, I will stick to the brand that means less work for me, so I won't be using this brand again.
